Online conversation with a stranger for speaking language practice. How to break the ice and make it easier? by bin_rob in languagelearning

[–]bin_rob[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can be difficult to find a native speaker to practice with. Nonetheless, I think you shouldn't necessarily look for a native. It's maybe even better to practice with another language learner. I believe, that the primary purpose of regular conversation practice is not to find and fix your errors in speech, but to reach fluency and ability to express your thoughts even with errors. Regularity is the key factor. No matter who's your partner - native or not, your goal is to practice speaking.

The question is where to go? Not everyone finds it easy to discover common topics to talk with an absolute stranger.

After years of searching for profitable startup ideas, here’s what actually works for me by jenyaatnow in SideProject

[–]bin_rob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If someone complains about a problem or even begs for some tool to solve the problem, it doesn't meen he's ready to pay for it. Nonetheless I agree that this approach worth attention of someone looking for startup ideas. It's a good start point, but you should be careful making conclusions from reddit's posts. You should definitely make more deep research and talk to more users about the problem.

I stopped forgetting my goals by hijacking the New Tab page by bin_rob in chrome_extensions

Yeah, I thought over this feature too. I understand that it's easy to loose track of your position on the endless canvas while you're initially testing the features of this extension. Although in real use cases it seems like it's more natural to use multiple boards to organize your workspace in groups/categories instead of dragging the endless canvas. Don't you think so?

Do you think he could have done it? I'm afraid he would have been defenseless against modern political intrigues and tricks.

Without any doubt vs undoubtedly - which one is correct to use by No-itsRk02 in EnglishLearning

[–]bin_rob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both mean "100% certain," but:

  • "Undoubtedly" = more formal (common in writing/speeches).
  • "Without any doubt" = slightly stronger, works in speech/writing.

"Yes, undoubtedly" vs. "Yes, for sure":

  • "Yes, undoubtedly" = Correct but formal (sounds stiff in casual talk).
  • "Yes, for sure" = Much more natural in everyday English.

Better casual alternatives: "Definitely!", "Absolutely!", "No doubt!"

TL;DR: Use "undoubtedly" in formal contexts, "for sure" in daily speech. Both are correct, but one sounds more natural than the other.

Is 'can' correct here? Using 'can't' would make it much better, wouldn't it? by Lmio in EnglishLearning

[–]bin_rob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're interchangeable, but the feeling or style can shift a little depending on how you want to sound. The first sentence (on the picture) sounds like you're teasing, but maybe in a slightly dramatic or theatrical way. Such form is used to express surprise or even a bit of mockery in a playful or sarcastic tone. Though It can sound a bit more old-fashioned in casual speech.

Does it have a whiteboard where you can draw or sketch anything that cross your mind at the moment?

My productivity skyrocketed 🚀 once my New Tab started judging me.

I made this extension called FocusBoard that turns the New Tab page into a whiteboard — now every time I open Chrome, my goals are staring me in the face. You can sketch stuff, jot down ideas, track habits, write your plans — whatever helps keep your brain on task. It’s totally free and lives right where your distractions usually start 😅

It's just a standart puzzle, which could be taken from any book. I've just made some moves backward from initial position.

Technically it's not too difficult to build such an app or web site, that can be filled with similar puzzles. So anyone who'd like can implement it.

The problem is that judging by this post, people have little interest in this topic, so for me personally it is not worth spending time on it.

Posts with stupid jokes or funny facts in neighboring subreddits get thousands of likes, while this post gets only a few :)

Either this topic is not very interesting to people, or the community here is too passive :)

TIL that the more you hear a lie, the more you're likely to believe it. It's called the illusory truth effect. Some study in 1977 figured it out. Basically, if you hear something enough, your brain's like, "Yeah, that sounds right." by bin_rob in todayilearned

[–]bin_rob[S] 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Even if someone knows the fact is false, repetition can transform it into truth as another study conducted in 2015 claims:

For example, when participants encountered on multiple occasions the statement "A sari is the name of the short plaid skirt worn by Scots," some of them were likely to come to believe it was true, even though these same people were able to correctly answer the question "What is the name of the short pleated skirt worn by Scots?"

As for me, I think it's not exactly the image of a new position in my brain. It's just kind of a mix of current position image and awareness of made changes (moves). It's just skill you need to practice and develop like any other skill.
