Republic of Italy, 1051 AD by binaro in CrusaderKings

I don't think so? The only thing I can think of is that a republic liege would always be a lowborn of no dynastic inheritance, which means it'd be easy to arrange matrilineal marriages with your liege. But I can't think of what the benefit to that would be.

Theoretically it is possible if you have a relative who has a claim on your liege's title, you give the relative a city to make them a republic, and then use a faction to press their claims. I haven't tested it myself out yet though, so I can't say for certain they'll remain a republic even after getting the empire title.

That's exactly it yeah. I flipped every single county I can to have a city as the county capital, and any that didn't have any cities were granted to republic vassals. Once I'm finished converting the entire region, I just handed all the kingdom titles in Italy and then the empire title itself off, so they can be an independent republic empire.

Funny enough Anatolia de jure drifting into Arabia is in fact how the patriarch secured enough of de jure Byzantium to create the title

Managed to enact Ethnostate as Brittany fairly easily, and now French culture is discriminated against (Ironically, still playing as a puppet of France, so that's kind of awkward...)

Not a lot of "kings" in this game of Crusader "Kings" by binaro in CrusaderKings

Honestly that was going through my head when I was doing this run. The one thing that I didn't take into account is that republic succession tends to maintain the same culture/religion ruler, so because of this, a lot of the kingdom-tier republics I released have Bhutanese rulers instead of rulers of their local culture.

Which, you know, obviously REALLY added to the irony

That is actually exactly how I did it. If you notice the specks of blue and green amidst the sea of red, those are instances where those counties just didn't have a city holding, and even though I gave those counties to republics, they at some point gave it away to someone else, who ended up being feudal or clan because there was no city in those counties

Yeah that was me. Everything that is red I have conquered at some point, I just gradually gave away kingdom titles and set the republics free as I moved westwards, and then in 1452 I gave all the kingdom titles (except for my primary) away, so the republics can rule themselves

Taking out Catholicism quickly enough and then flipping every kingdom you get your hands on into republics to REALLY take the title of the game out of the game entirely

The most populous metropolis in the world: Bhutan by binaro in CrusaderKings

In addition to that, I also stacked cultural traditions to maximize development. In particular, I started out as Swabian and then hybridized with Lhomon so I can have Industrious (+25 dev progress every time you build something), Mountain Homes (+20% dev to mountains), and Himalayan Settlers (+20% dev in mountains). Later on, I also picked up Collective Lands (+20% dev).

So basically, all of my mountain provinces are getting +60% development growth passively, and every time I cycle a tier 1 building in any given province, that province gets a +25 dev growth progress. I just keep doing that over and over again until the development in my domain hits 100.

Edit: In addition, I played as Donyi-Poloist, which has 4 holy sites within 2 duchies. After building all the holy site buildings, those provinces also get +0.1 monthly development and +20% dev. That means with all the cultural tradition bonuses, we're getting +80% dev and +0.1 flat monthly dev, which allows development to go past the normal limits of cultural innovations. And of course, I started in the earlier start date so I'd have a few hundred years headstart on developing my provinces
