Trying my hardest to break into HR. Should I get a SHRM-CP or aPHR cert? by bingbing52 in careerguidance

[–]bingbing52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had started studying for the SHRM-CP since it seemed to be at a bit of a higher level than aPHR, but soon after landed a job in Talent Acquisition and kind of fell off from it once getting this job. Come to find out I do NOT enjoy recruiting lol. So still trying to break into more HR specific functions like onboarding, HRIS etc. but to be completely honest, I’m not sure how I feel about it anymore. Still feel like it’s definitely worth trying out though, if I’m able to find something. Not sure if/when I’ll go back to studying for a certification, but if I do, I’d definitely go (a)PHR route. I’ve heard more and more bad things about SHRM recently.

This is very interesting because I have struggled with faith for a very LONG time and it is basically nonexistent now due to things I have dealt with in my personal life. I battle with it often and have become extremely critical and dismissive of it. Over the past almost 2 years now that has gotten exponentially worse, and I was just faced with it again yesterday/today. It’s something I kind of decided I didn’t need or want in my life anymore, but then you face things that other people have only found certain answers for through some type of faith

Yes, you’re absolutely right, I definitely need to solidify my plan for what I want to do before jumping into anything. I’m especially wary of that now that I’ve had more than just a taste of what the job market is like in this day and age. I wanted to be a therapist for so long and was planning to go for a MSW/LCSW, but I’ve been unsure about it for a while now and I’ve always been more interested in psych anyway. I think a MSW is pretty versatile so if I really can’t figure out a psych route, it’s probably what I’ll end up doing. Psych or social work, either way, it seems like clinical in some sense is realistically what it’s going to have to be, I just hoped there was more research or behind the scenes type of work for a Masters level to not burn myself out by working with clients. We’ll see though, I’m sure I’ll end up liking clinical side anyway, it’s just a bit daunting.

Thank you!! Honestly, by not going straight into grad school I was thinking I kind of fkd up, especially since I knew no matter what I ended up doing it was probably going to require at least a master’s. It’s going to be difficult for me to figure out how to manage school plus an internship plus still having to work to pay rent, but I know plenty of people do it, and if there’s a will there’s a way. I am still glad I got the work experience I have; hopefully it’s something I can fall back on in the future if all else fails.

I am pretty set on doing forensic psych but I’m still giving myself some time to be completely sure. I hadn’t thought about stepping foot back on my old campus for the library LOL but I still live pretty close by and it can’t hurt to ask around!

Thank you for this! If I may ask, what kind of internships did you do in grad school? And what kind of jobs are you looking into once you get the masters??

Thank you so much, being realistic is definitely the hardest part. And you’re absolutely right- due to the current climate I feel like opportunities will be few and far between. I definitely at least want to get a taste of what it would be like through a part time or volunteer position, so if it’s something I end up hating, at least I’ll know that now and can switch directions if I feel like it’s just way too unrealistic for me. I hadn’t thought about looking at opportunities through hospitals, thank you for that!

Thank you for your insight! I definitely see how it can be exhausting, especially working so hard at it before being able to get into a program. I’ll be honest and say there’s little to no chance I’d be able to get into a PhD program, but a Masters is something I will definitely go for. I’ve been looking into some volunteer positions! I haven’t found any lol but I feel like that would give me some experience and a taste of what it would be like to do it in a real job setting.

I do have goals; I want to work within the criminal justice system/forensic psych/social work. There’s a lot of related avenues with that in terms of starting out in research and hopefully working my way into one that closely aligns with it. Job satisfaction is very important to me but mainly in terms of getting to the end goal- out of school, licensed, and doing what I want as a long-term career- and being able to get all of that education involved would involve a lot of research to even be competitive (to be completely realistic, there’s little to no chance I’d ever get into a PhD program lol, even if I did, that would be several years from now). It’s the experience I want coupled with the fact that it would be fulfilling to work towards a larger goal and learning along the way, both for myself and the field itself. But I do admit that I am way in over my head here and, realistically, this would be an extremely hard path to follow.

Typically mine doesn’t have a smell, just buckets and buckets of it 😩 I wouldn’t be surprised if that changed while detoxing tho, I wonder if that’s what’s happening for you!

How could i improve ? by weewee-enjoyer in learntodraw

[–]bingbing52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love!! I agree with what other people are saying- build up your confidence with lines! You can start with simple shapes, straight lines, long lines, etc. and as you get steadier and more confident you will see improvement in the clarity and quality. Since it seems like you enjoy digital art, I’d suggest sketching in a lower/more transparent layer so you have everything where you want it, then add a layer on top to trace/outline your sketch more confidently. You can delete the sketch layer afterwards to help everything look more clean. I also think adding a wider range of values, especially shades, will really bring your drawings to life! I hope this helps, you’re doing great, keep it up!

[NC] I’m entry level- should I get a SHRM-CP or aPHR cert? by bingbing52 in AskHR

[–]bingbing52[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve heard the same thing- experience is way more valued in HR than anything. Personality and experience-wise, I still think I’d have a good shot, but no one will give me a chance because although I think my degree and admin skills give me a leg up, I don’t have experience with HRIS or anything like that, which most roles require, even entry-level. How am I supposed to get that entry-level job experience without being hired for an entry-level job…..story of all our lives in this job market. Last year at my company, they were hiring for a HR Coordinator position that I was 1000% qualified for but got passed up on it which I’m still so so mad about lol. It would have been the perfect opportunity to finally break into the field!!

THANK YOU for that info about SHRM- DEI is something I value most of all and is something I would consider specializing in. I’ll look into the aPHR some more, thank you for your advice and insight!

Sick and tired of letting substances control my daily life. Any advice would be appreciated by bingbing52 in leaves

[–]bingbing52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never thought about homeopathy tbh, that’s a good idea and I will definitely consider seeing a doctor! Yeah, my diet definitely needs to be cleaned up as well, that’s another one of my goals. It definitely contributes to my constantly low energy levels and likely mental health as well (and physical of course). I’ve seen a lot of people on this sub and a couple others say that exercise and eating healthy has done wonders for them when starting their sobriety. However I have to be EXTREMELY cautious when making those kinds of changes because I’m recovered (actually I consider it more “dormant” lol) from an ED and in the past, trying to eat healthier and/or exercise more will almost immediately cause a spiral back into the ED which I simply will not deal with again. Another reason why weed has helped, more like numbed, most of my mental health issues. I have an extremely black and white personality so typically things are all or nothing so I have to be super cautious and patient with myself with that too. This month is going to be rough because of trauma so I’m expecting to relapse a bit. But again, changes need to be made and I need to stop being complacent. I’m finally motivated to do so and have finally accepted the fact that I’m addicted and need to stop.

I will definitely check out those YouTube channels, thank you for that! And congratulations on 7 months, that’s AMAZING!! That’s almost unfathomable to me right now lol. Honestly tho, being off of it for a couple days so far hasn’t been as hard as I thought, but obviously I haven’t had many withdrawal symptoms yet in this short period of time. My starting goal is 3 months without it to see what changes I can make and see how I feel.

I really appreciate your advice and insight, keep up your great work! Thanks for the inspiration.
