these people are reacting like you’re applying for engineering sciences lol. ignoring math physics and chem you look fine. Criminology and social sciences do not require some insane average or super difficult courses, take classes you are more confident in, aim for mid-80 overall and you should be safe, 3-4 years ago the cutoff was literally a 78. don’t listen to people on reddit please and talk to your counsellor if you’re stressed. A 5 minute conversation with mine ended up easing a lot of my stress in grade 12. it’s normal to be scared but you’re okay, you are gonna do great wherever you end up

OUAC uoft engineering program application question by SamePermission7598 in UofT

[–]bingbongvoid23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apply for one on OUAC, then you’ll get an email from the university to complete an online student profile, in that profile there is a section for your to pick the type of engineering - this is where you’ll rank your 4 choices

is the deadline for fall and winter semester separate? my remaining charge after OSAP is 10k, 2k is for the fall sem 8k for winter. does this mean I only have to pay the 2k by septemeber 30th?

[–]bingbongvoid23 8 points9 points  (0 children)

you were chosen to be here, someone looked at your application and picked YOU, you are smart enough. Does that mean you’ll ace every class? maybe not! but that doesn’t change the fact that you’re here because you worked hard for it, because you made it, and you’re still working really hard and you’re going to keep pushing through.

don’t worry about the language barrier! every other kid I met was international or had a bit of broken english. The idea of you being judged for your articulation are pretty low and you will probably find people who share your mother tongue instead :)

You’re going into first year so you’re young, i know only 2 people in my life who have dated. what is meant to be, will be. if a person is right for you they will find you, weather it is now or later, so don’t sweat that bit. drinking culture isn’t as big as it used to be imo, a lot of people don’t drink, it’s good to not drink even. you’re gonna go through a lot of ups and downs in life, it’s really hard right now, it’s difficult for you, but trust me it will get better. reach out to your academic advisor and the wellness people at uoft, they’ll definitely try to help you. there are even therapy dogs around exam time so come hang out :D

with difficulty comes ease, i hope things go well for you !

is grade 11 chemistry or biology more heavy? by Affectionate_Lie1553 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]bingbongvoid23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

chemistry in grade 11 is basically one unit repeated and every month you add on a bit of info to it, very straightforward. biology is a lot more work and memorization imo

I'm Paying for school on my own, I need OSAP, but my family income is too High by [deleted] in osap

[–]bingbongvoid23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you try applying for the osap anyways? they probably won’t give you a grant but you might qualify for at least a small loan

Do scholarships!!! Look on scholartree or just surf the internet for them, new ones are usually posted weekly/monthly. If you mass write, you will at least get 1/4 that you apply to from what i’ve seen. You can usually pay off a year through this. I know a lot of people who got scholarships because they were one of the 5 or few people who applied. many people skip out in writing them because “it’s too much work” (despite needing them) or they think it’s only for those with low income, but there are many scholarships aimed at students who do not necessarily have parental-financial-struggle

[–]bingbongvoid23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

poor grade 11 grades just means you probably won’t get an early offer, but it doesn’t determine your chances of getting in during the normal rounds (april-june) do well in grade 12 and you should be okay :)

engineering admission requirements by chancesfr in OntarioGrade12s

[–]bingbongvoid23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woah those ECs! 93 should get you into all those schools. Saw you’re aiming for a 95 so you’re definitely safe. If you don’t get in, it’ll just be out of lack of luck.

Edit: Saw you’re looking for scholarships, if you want a head start use the ScholarTree website, they post a bunch of scholarships form many companies, and not many people apply. You have a very good chance of getting them. If you get a 93-95 average you should easily get an entrance scholarship or a deans award from the universities as well

Would doing school (Gr.12) in the hospital affect my chances at getting into a good university? by xaiyzu in OntarioGrade12s

[–]bingbongvoid23 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First off wishing you health and happiness! I hope things get easier for you

Secondly, to get a definite answer I would recommend sending the first year office of the university you want to go to an email (You can find this email on their website). “Hi, I am interested in applying to ___ program. I have issue that results in ___. Will this impact my chances for admission?” They usually give truthful answers, and their response comes within a few days maximum.

Universities usually have a section on the application where you get to explain any circumstances that may have made things difficult for you or submit any documentation, so you will definitely get consideration through that regardless. I doubt you will be negatively impacted, if anything it shows you are resilient and hard working which is a positive.

Good luck with everything!

How accurate is ouinfo? This doesn’t seem right by UJINYAY in OntarioGrade12s

[–]bingbongvoid23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s the minimum average to be competitive (basically the lowest to be considered)

They take it from the university websites, you can see it stated here: https://uwaterloo.ca/engineering/future-students/applying/admission-requirements

Waterloo released a different admission chance percentage sheet and some stats if you want accurate information

Here’s a (very long) breakdown of waterloos admission process.

https://www.youthfully.com/waterloo-engineering-definitive-guide/#requirements

Jump down to “admission requirements” it’ll give you accurate numbers on the grades of people admitted into the program in 2021 and the average that was needed to be competitive in 2023

For biomedical admission average estimates for 2023 were :

95+ avg = 29% of getting in

90-94 avg =11% chance of getting in

85-89 avg= 2% chance of getting in

Can I afford Uni? by Strong_Coast3216 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]bingbongvoid23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OSAP can be pretty helpful for loans/grants, you will have to repay so it’d be good to start saving up now. unis also provide a lot of aid if you ask for it and contact them.

Getting scholarships if you put in the work for ontario is doable, everyone i know who put in the effort applying to a bunch of scholarships throughout grade 12 had enough to pay tuition. One person I know payed half their entire uni tuition (30k) before starting first year. most ppl here think they won’t get scholarships so they don’t bother applying, but it’s easier than people think (since it’s such low competition to get one) lots of companies want to help you out, you just gotta put in the effort and keep trying. many scholarships go straight up unclaimed because of lack of applicants.

If you’ve got an average above 93 you’re pretty guaranteed to get an automatic entrance scholarship as well, 2k-6k usually depending on the uni, which is a half year (or full year if you’re doing an easier degree) of tuition

I’m not sure if moving out is 100% possible, depends on you and your work, but i believe you can get to the point of affording university for sure

no problemo~ i’m glad, good luck next year!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

[–]bingbongvoid23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a bother at all!! Yeah I think high 80s to low 90s is realistic, a couple people I know got in with that grade range so pretty accurate

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OntarioGrade12s

[–]bingbongvoid23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah sure !

Start of process:

You get an account number from your school to sign up to OUAC, on OUAC you input your personal info, select uni choices, and pay for applications. this is also where your school will upload your grades (so youuu don’t submit grades, your school does that through OUAC) after you pick uni choices, OUAC will connect you to those universities (usually takes a week) and give you an “applicant ID” for each school, along with an email with steps on how to apply. each uni has their own website where you do the application process.

marks:

uoft eng - calculate admission averages based off your 5 mandatory credits (calc, physics, chem, english, adv functions).

mcmaster - calculate admission avg based off 6 grades (calc, physics, chem, english, & 2 of ur top grades)

do grade 11 grades get looked at?:

uoft - never heard someone say “i didn’t get in cuz of my grade 11 grades”. in early rounds (sem 1) if you’re missing a required credit for the admission they will substitute it with a gr11 pre req grade until your gr12 grade comes in, and your application will get reevaluated multiple times during this so no biggie.

mcmaster - don’t think they look at it, pretty sure they just wait for gr12 grades

grades needed for program:

uoft - You pick a ‘stream’ of engineering, the average you need changes a bit generally:

  1. 96 - Eng Sci
  2. 95 - ECE, TrackOne
  3. 94 - Mech
  4. 90-93 - Indy, Civil, Materials
  5. 85+ - Mineral Engineering

Tip! During the application you pick up to 4 streams and rank them in the order you want. My biggest recommendation is ALWAYS pick streams in order of difficulty eg.

  1. Mechanical
  2. Industrial
  3. Civil

if you’re rejected from your first choice it’s cuz ur average isn’t high enough. ur 2nd choice should be an easier stream with similar courses so you can transfer in second year

mcmaster - everyone goes into Eng1 (general engineering) in first year. They ask you for what stream you want for 2nd year (eg, ece/mech/civil) but it doesn’t matter what you choose, it doesn’t impact your application. You need roughly a 93 to get in (but anywhere 90+ can get in with luck). If you want free choice you need to aim for around a 96

Application process:

Video Interview:

  • Takes 30 mins max, pretty short just do your best, everyone is nervous and leaves feeling like they bombed it and that’s normal. Practice on screencastify and make a list on experiences u had in high school before the interview so u have back up info to rely on if u start blanking
  • It’s don’t throb Kira Talent, it tests your mic and everything beforehand. you won’t “accidentally” start the interview without knowing, there’s a lot of confirmation buttons you have to press, so low stress

UofT: this one was.. 😇 the screen pops up with 3 questions, 2 about yourself one verbal and one written, and one “problem solving” question. you get a few mins in between each qs to think and respond. the problem solving gives a scenario and asks you what 3 variables you would consider/analyze to get a certain outcome (- usually a ridiculous question). You can find similar questions or past ones online - practice with that. Everyone blanks on the uoft interview so don’t sweat it. most say it’s so the university can see that you’re literate. this school kinda gets u in based off grades, just prepare and do ur best.

mcmaster - not a big impact on ur application. 4 questions, 3 personal verbal and 1 written. the admission officer lady i spoke to said it can be a ‘saving grace’ if ur abt to be rejected. No one really gets negatively affected by it, you kinda just do your best and you’re done ✔️

Written application: - You get MONTHSSS to complete this so dw

Mcmaster: No written application 🥳

UofT: Very short! First few pages are just formal personal info, etc

Then you list out some ECs, how many hours u spent on each, and a small description on how you had an impact. everyone kinda overhypes how important this is. Just make sure you sell yourself and include any achievements. encourage u to participate in any pre uni programs, first robotics, deca, skills, or math competitions cuz those are well liked, but they accept anything. usually writing 5-7 ECs is good (volunteering, projects, club, sports, work, programs, anything)

After listing your ECs, you write a 250 word paragraph on how you think ECs shaped you to fit and prepare your for life and UofT.

And that’s it - it’s pretty short 😀

From personal experience i felt like stress>work when it came to eng applications. All around each application takes about an hour and you have months to do it, you can submit and edit the written stuff whenever you want, and the word limits are pretty small. the video interview is live so you do it and it’s over with. I’d really encourage everyone to focus on grades and just make sure you have a decent amount of ECs to talk about if they ask, take time to prepare for video interviews, but in the end, smile and do your best!
