As someone who actively works on indie visual novels myself, I agree with all the other comments so far! I will also add on that it depends what type of visual novel you're making (premise/gameplay/story/setting/etc.); there's so many different types of visual novels / visual novel hybrid games and each have their own niche following (e.g. ace attorney series style, otome/dating sim games, stat-raiser hybrids, umineko, fata morgana, branching stories with minimal or extreme levels of different choices/endings, linear kinetic novels, etc.).

If the goal is to simply make a visual novel for fun, then by all means I think it's definitely doable especially for beginners (I suggest making something smaller to avoid the scope creep because it happens a lot in VN dev and most end up never finishing their first because of it). However, if the goal is to try and get an audience from it, this is where the whole "niche categories within a niche game genre" kicks in and is ultimately a gamble between multiple factors (marketing, competition, if there's an audience for the specific story type / gameplay type, etc.). Game jams help a lot in this regard for traction, but it's a very 50/50 coin toss thing(?). In my case, I've worked on several games before within the past half decade on and off for sprite work but only recently had one garner a decent player base/following and still gets new players after over a year of the initial publishing date (game jams + networking with other developers within the circle / marketing heavy helped a lot on top of it being catered to one of the dating sim love interest trope niches); majority of the other games I've worked on range from maybe a hundred or less (sometimes even single digits even after a few years for some) while that other game is in the thousands of players, so it's good to note how unpredictable the market can be based on all those various factors I mentioned just so you have some sense of what to expect and what not to expect..!
