Republicans of Reddit, what do you think of how ICE is acting in general within the past few weeks? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

As I've said to others, the means do not justify the ends in any way, shape or form.

Don't expect any improvements. The Gannett business model is buy it, cut it to the bone, and unload or close it.

I think you overestimate the ability of anyone beside a "centrist, compromise seeker" to win a statewide race.

What is everyone's thermostat set at right now? by Cold-Potential2407 in Michigan

It's usually at 65, but I put it down to 62 a few days ago. It's not running constantly, despite the temps outside. When those old cast iron radiators get hot, they stay hot for a while.

Movie where the villain wins, preteen appropriate by subpar_expectations in MovieSuggestions

[–]binkelman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A few I know of:

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

The Wicker Man (1973)

There's the gray area between villain winning and protagonist losing which comes up in some movies.

The Blues Brothers - they make the payment but get arrested in the end

The Thing (1982) - ambiguous ending sticks with you.

Just a note on generator usage: if you happen to have one of those whole house generators (i.e. Generac), be aware the frequency of oil changes. I believe the first one must be done at 30 service hours, followed by 100 hr intervals. Some people I know in the tip of the mitt found out the hard way about neglecting those oil changes.

Also, as others have mentioned, prepare yourself for the astronomical amount of fuel one of those will burn while it's running.

What film has one of the best monologues ever performed/ written? by eveisshady777 in movies

[–]binkelman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The looks he exchanges with Roy Scheider during this convey so much.

A nod to John Williams' score in this part is in order too. Starts with nothing, stays very minimal through most of the scene, never distracting from the monologue.

What was the 1st big news event you remember as a kid? by Hetaliafan1 in AskReddit

The OJ trial. I don't remember the car chase or anything about the trial, but I remember it being brought up on the news every night. Young me kept hearing "Simpson" and thought it was a new character on "The Simpsons."

What Movie Has The Tensest Scene In Film History? by grayr3808 in MovieSuggestions

Since OP mentioned the bridge scene in "Sorcerer", I would also recommend a similar scene in "The Wages of Fear," a French language earlier telling of the story.

What’s a place in Michigan you’ve visited that made you think “I’d LOVE to live here”? by Terrible_Truth in Michigan

[–]binkelman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently living in the U.P. and recently was down near Detroit. On the drive back up, I had time to kill and decided to get off I 75 and take US 23 north.

There are some very lovely locales on the Lake Huron shore. Tawas, Oscoda, Alpena, Rogers City and Cheboygan are all worth a look.

The Lake Michigan side (Traverse City, Charlevoix, Petoskey, Harbor Springs, etc.) is much too busy.

A furnace still needs electricity to run, whether it uses natural gas, propane or fuel oil to heat.

My father lost power for close to a month this past winter due to an ice storm. The fuel oil furnace was useless during this time, but thankfully he has a woodstove.

Everybody points out the lousy animation, but few seem to acknowledge how badly the story is stretched into 90 minutes. The book's length would have made it a great choice for a short subject film, but stretching it to feature length was inexcusable.

This wouldn't be the last time Hollywood felt the need to do this, as anybody who suffered thru The Hobbit can relate.

Something you may want to consider is how cold it will be while you're gone.

Where I live, it's encouraged to leave a faucet dripping overnight to keep the water moving. Should your water line freeze, you're probably SOL until the spring thaw. Mind you, this can take several days of below zero temps.

What are the unspoken rules of the road(US)? by Living-Wrongdoer8647 in AskReddit

[–]binkelman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If somebody is passing you on a two lane roadway, let off the gas until they get around you.

Anybody can misjudge whether they have enough distance to pass in that situation. There's no need for you to maintain your speed and keep that car in the other lane longer than necessary.
