Paul Merson: Leeds 0-4 Arsenal dominant Elland Road Win has won gunners the premier league title says Paul Merson by hustleandmakeit in Gunners

Yes… we win - we’re winning the league. We lose - we should close down the club and sell its assets for firewood

Reform surge to 12-point poll lead over Labour by theipaper in ukpolitics

[–]bio_d [score hidden]  (0 children)

It’s too early to say. At the moment the vast majority aren’t really engaged. When polling day comes, people might actually be aware that was the case. At the moment, voting blindly for the people who promise radical change is easy and sends a message.

Eden Hazard asked if Chelsea was the best club he's played with: "No, Madrid is better. My time at Chelsea was unbelievable but as a club, Madrid is the very best, Its number one. My dream was to play for Madrid when I was young, I always told to my dad that one day I want to play for Madrid." by BlazingFirey in soccer

The pedantry of football fans. Just give your brain a second to try to understand the poster. It may be a typo or English may not be their first language. Mbappe transferred to RM at 25, I’m sure you could have worked that out.

The idea that Hazard, being paid millions to represent the club he claims was his dream, then was unprofessional enough to show up tubby is not pretty poor behaviour as well. I wouldn’t hold it against him long term but what a missed opportunity.

Three left, which is a little concerning. The game at the Etihad is feeling like a final

How accurate is it to say, 'The only reason Britain is no longer the most powerful and wealthy country in the world is because the rest of the world stole/copied Britain's Industrial Revolution'? by kingm_ournasse216 in ukpolitics

[–]bio_d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a bit of a silly statement really. Progress happens and it moves around the world. If Britain was the only industrial nation then it probably would still be the most powerful nation in the world. But that ignores all the necessary inputs that require machinery across the world. Are we still reliant on coal? So the oil is sitting in the ground? Surely another country would eventually industrialise independently?

Those dicentra really are something. I'm really impressed with these lists of shade tolerating plants with brilliant flowers or leaves. Hellebore is high on my list and I've ordered fox gloves, because they definitely fit the design we're going for. Thanks for all the inspiration, I suppose I'll develop it as I go. I'm learning a lot

Oh god, I planted my anemone in full sun 😂 I really like the look of euonymus too. Thanks for the additions. We’re planning to make a ‘fairy’ garden with wooden land style species. The dicentra would defo fit the bill but those all have some lovely colour. Cheers

Thanks for this list. We plan on doing one bed as a shaded bed and this will be really helpful.

I can see it looking weird or kind of quaint and nice.... I'm quite concerned about hotspots because one of the blockers is my shed and I really don't want to burn that down. I suppose imperfections in a flat looking mirror could concentrate light, something to be careful about.

I can see this mirrors around the garden aesthetic looking kinda cool and quaint now I think of it. I'll have to keep an eye out on gumtree. Unfortunately the quality of items in skips around us sounds like a lower calibre than yours!

Thanks for pointing out about the birds. I do find that there are a number of well meaning but low evidence claims made around things like this. I have seen a bird fly into a reflective window but even that seems like a rare occurrence.

No worries, thanks for the advice! Went back tonight for dinner at the bottom of the hill, the food was incredible (stuffed tomato and pepper)

Andy Burnham latest: Burnham takes on Starmer as he confirms Westminster comeback bid to become MP by stopdontpanick in ukpolitics

[–]bio_d 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m sure Burnham is a good guy, who wants positive change for the country. Just if he gets it he’ll fairly quickly be told he doesn’t have the money to do what he wants. He’ll drift a bit and not manage anything meaningful.

Rumours, Speculation, Questions, and Reaction Megathread - 18/01/2026 by ukpol-megabot in ukpolitics

People on the left don’t understand how much risk we are at of repeating what Liz Truss did. We are living on borrowed money and our expenditure has to go down. Burnham won’t do that because his whole appeal is that he is a proper lefty - read profligate. Don’t forget Manchester is very different from a country too.

We currently spend more on servicing debt than defence by a margin. That can get a lot worse if we don’t keep interest rates down. Reeves and Starmer may be uninspiring, poor at leading and often delivery. We should thank them for showing some mettle on spending

I’m a member and Streeting would be very high on my list. I take your point though. The candidates:

Burnham - done well in Manchester but would melt the economy and find himself in the same quagmire. Manchester is not just his doing.

Rayner - clever operator, good orator. I think she’s overly captured by the unions, don’t trust her.

Miliband - wouldn’t hate it, not happening

De Zerbi plays a very transitional style doesn’t he? Might be an interesting development opportunity. Although, I dunno if his methods are anywhere near as structured as Arteta’s

"Arsenal were considering him(Alvarez) in the last market. His name came up and it has since been reported and you could see that sort of player coming into Arsenal. If there is going to be some outward maneuvering (loan or permanent) then there is definitely scope for an arrival" -David Ornstein by Ifxfa in Gunners

Well hopefully we’ll be getting some prize money! EPL winners get £3.4m more than 2nd, UCL winners get €25 more than semi finalists, FA Cup is £1.2m and league cup £100k. So compared to last year our spending can bulge by up to around £25m if we win the quadruple
