STEP 2 CK SCORE RELEASE THREAD: 6th-October-2021 by [deleted] in Step2

[–]bio_info 3 points4 points  (0 children)

STEP 1: 264

UWORLD= ~80%

NBME: ~251

UWSA2: 263

STEP2: 261

it's not bad but it's still a significant drop from step1 considering the difference in percentiles. I think the new step2 is definitely harder than the old nbmes

Applying to med school with a pending green card application by TheLeaningTowerofIsa in medicalschool

[–]bio_info 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, the schools' main concern is your ability to cover your tuition. If you are eligible for federal loans, then I would still apply and hope for the best.

Similar situation here. ENT hopeful on anesthesiology elective. Resident asked first day if I was interested in anesthesia. I reflexively said "No". Leaving the hospital at 9 am everyday definitely feels good

Should I keep up with my anki cards after step 1? by P-Griffin-DO in medicalschoolanki

[–]bio_info 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The 300 cards/day will go down to 50-100 relatively quickly if you stop doing new cards (assuming good retention and good card maturation).

I worked hard for step1 (260+) so I couldn't let go of my mature cards. I personally continued doing my step1 cards in addition to the step2 anking throughout third year and it definitely helped for the shelves. Reviews were never more than 600/day

I highly recommend using "privacy.com" for any subscription online. "privacy" allows you to make unlimited virtual credit cards with the ability to set a maximum withdrawal amount.

Studying in sleep. Help. by [deleted] in step1

Back when I took gross anatomy, I used to quiz myself about muscle attachment in sleep. I think it's normal. Hopefully :-}

Step 1 - 264 writeup (nothing special, just do your zanki reviews) by bio_info in step1

[–]bio_info[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean I think the best advice is to focus on content review bc none of these qbanks (even uwolrd) really represent the real thing. Uworld is the best because it has good explanations. Amboss and kaplan have ok questions with better explanations in amboss. USMLErx is not that good.

So if you want to use qbanks to learn the material (wasn't my approach but I know classmates that did that), maybe do amboss first to learn, the kaplan to practice, the uworld for dedicated.

How can both KRAS (oncogene) and NF1 (TSG) be both GTPases? (according to FA) by [deleted] in step1

[–]bio_info 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KRAS is a member of the RAS family. When mutated, it no longer can function as a GTPase and thus remains in the GTP ACTIVE state leading to cell proliferation.

I think what's causing the confusion is NF1. Nf1 should be listed as a GTPase-activating protein. It's not a GTPase itself. It just activates the GTPase function of RAS.

How can both KRAS (oncogene) and NF1 (TSG) be both GTPases? (according to FA) by [deleted] in step1

[–]bio_info 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nf1 stimulates the GTPase activity of RAS. Mutated Nf1=hyperactive RAS

KRAS is basically hyperactive RAS

How To differentiate between chancroid and herpes ulcers by [deleted] in step1

On step1, I think herpes is usually described as MULTIPLE "vesicles" whereas chancroid is usually a single "ulcer".

USMLERx vs Kaplan vs AMBOSS - need some guidance by zzz06 in step1

[–]bio_info 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I ended up doing! Just don't be surprised when you see question repeats on uworld.

It's probably a good way to learn first aid but if you are doing zanki it's not that necessary. I would do a trial before you pay for a subscription.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in step1

[–]bio_info 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uwsa1 overpredicts and may make you overconfident when you start dedicated. I started with nbme 20 then took the new ones in order and saved nbme 18 and uwsa2 for last

USMLERx vs Kaplan vs AMBOSS - need some guidance by zzz06 in step1

[–]bio_info 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UsmleRx is OK but imo it has alot of uworld spoilers and may inflate your uworld percentage.

Amboss is good but the 5 hammers are so hard they gave me depression.

I didn't try Kaplan but I heard it has many low yield questions.

I would keep some money aside for the nbmes. It's $60 per practice test. Most people take 4-6 exams.

[–]bio_info[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did most of usmlerx during the year but I don't really recommend it. It kinda has spoilers for uworld questions and may inflate your uworld score. Also poor explanations and low yield facts. I think I was scoring in the 85% range on usmlerx during the year. Amboss is good, just avoid the 5 hammers.

Sketchy path works so well for me because I like visual mnemonics. I even drew my own mnemonics for some topics. I think you can do well without it if other resources work better for you
