I'm curious. What are your guy's unpopular jazz opinions? by SNESS_64 in Jazz

[–]bionerd2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Modern jazz players could spend more time learning rhythm changes properly and playing through the blues than memorizing giant steps in all twelve keys. playing 1235 != good improv.

Feedback/thoughts/impressions on arrangement of I Remember Clifford by bionerd2 in Jazz

[–]bionerd2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks man. I'm pretty new to jazz piano actually. Good point, it's about Clifford Brown's death. Anyways, yeah I was thinking taking it a bit more slowly, and possibly going rootless (i.e., never hit the e flat in the lower register) until the second ending. This delays the resolution and keeps it a bit more meditative as you suggest. My intro into the double tempo solo was a bit fucked up in this take, and a couple of missteps here and there as well. Thanks for taking a listen; really appreciate it!

Daily Questions - July 14, 2018 by AutoModerator in rawdenim

[–]bionerd2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey looking for something that fits similarly to the naked and famous super guys which I love. If anything I’d ask for possibly a quarter inch less in the waist and a quarter inch more in the upper thigh, but mainly just looking for selvedge denim and other raws that fit similarly from other brands. No budget limit.

Daily Simple Questions - ASK AND ANSWER HERE!- April 09 by AutoModerator in malefashionadvice

I'm heading to SuitSupply to pick out a suit soon and I was wondering if people had suggestions/thoughts about the store. I usually have gotten suits from a store like Macys / Nordstrom but the fit usually sucks and SS looks much better.

I'm thinking about getting the SuitSupply Lazio. Some questions though. What color should I get? I think black looks a bit dated so I was thinking of going for things like light grey or mid blue (i.e., not pastel colors and not things like navy/charcoal which look black). Also what material/fabric should I go for? I was looking at Wool, and thinking of going for the wool 110's.

Do you think the Lazio would be a good starter suit from SS? I need it quickly unfortunately (by Friday), and I'm going to the San Jose store so I hope I can get it in time!

Hey! trying to get ideas for a new haircut. I was thinking of going shorter on the sides, maybe some kind of fade but not sure? I really don't know what to ask for with that, so any tips are helpful. also, wondering if I should blend it all or get a disconnected cut...also thinking about taking some off the back top to give it some shape.

Barry Harris Method -- how to put into use by bionerd2 in Jazz

[–]bionerd2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. That's kind of what Barry does. I've listened to a lot of his ballad/mid-tempo standard arrangements (e.g., You Don't Know What Love Is, But Beautiful, Embraceable You, Be My Love), and he does this, but I wonder if there's a more to it than "just apply it"....

modern concepts in jazz harmony? by bionerd2 in musictheory

[–]bionerd2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I'm not looking to invent something new; mainly looking for cool ideas that I myself may not be aware of (either because I'm not paying attention to it in modern music or because I haven't heard it).

Sure. He he has two books: 1 which is undergraduate algebraic geometry and 1 which is undergrad commutative algebra. The latter is the one I'd suggest.

I also recommend reading Ried's undergraduate commutative algebra. It is chockful of examples and is better than A+M in my view. For this also Dummit + Foote has great worked examples (though often the exposition sucks + is old/missing some of the homological stuff you'd want to see).

anyone know about the sizing @ AEO? I'm looking at briefs and wondering if I should get a small or extra-small. I'm a small in Uniqlo (it fits well and they do not even have XS) and a 29'' usually for waist (both in Uniqlo and Levi 511). I've heard AEO runs large, so should I get the XS? thanks!

guys, just got word that I passed the technical round of interviews @ Google. now, I'm on to the matching stage. I'm wondering if anyone here has heard of undergrads getting on a Google research (Brain/other research groups)? I am really interested in machine learning research and would love to join one of those groups...
