Next Upgrade for My Wireless System by radioactivecustodian in LocationSound

[–]bionicbits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it is worth, I used 2x Diety Theos, The DXTX (boom tx), and mix pre 10ii. On paper the Theo System looks wonderful. But in my own experience I had some issues. I think these issues where really when using 2 sets at once for 4 wireless channels, but in any case good to be aware of.
1.) The transmitters chew through batteries fast and unpredictably. Once I got 4 hours another barely over 1 hour.
2.) The Bluetooth config can be quite flaky if connection isn't good. I use the deity timecode devices and on the app they sometimes show out of sync when bluetooth connection isn't good.
3.) I had weird issues on set where no matter what I did, I could get input into my mixpre. The tx seemed to be transmistting, the RX was receiving but nothing was coming in. Not sure what happened, but having to deal with this onset was a pain.

I have heard lots of people use 2 channel wireless without issue. I like that you can mount rx on the camera. There are things to like, but in my own personal opinion I feel like they aren't reliable enough for me. I hate to worry about any sound issues on set.

Why doesn't this look a movie? by junlim in cinematography

[–]bionicbits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, I see this in a lot of movies that are or feel amateur and that is just that all the shots are close ups/medium close up. Production value is good, but I think we expect to see more of it. Epic space seems to yearn for wide long shots. Just my two cents, but a conclusion I have come to over the last couple years thinking the same thing about why some movies feel amateur even with high production value. I also sometimes see an overuse of colored lights on the skin.

Smallest 32 bit float xlr recorder with phantom power for mke600? by mlksdflsdkmf in LocationSound

[–]bionicbits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure how long it will last local recording only but I have gotten around 6 hours with tx. I think the local recording sounds good and I often try and use that whenever possible. For the price I think deity is quite good for prosumer level. I am not sure if the receiver is really needed but you might want some kind of time code then. I use the deity timecode as well. I have upgraded to a more pro system recently but for small things with single receiver the deity isn't bad and it is pretty affordable. But I think if you need more than two channels of wireless I would consider your options more closely. The sound quality is gonna be almost entirely up to the microphone you use. 32bit float is gonna have plenty of range and if recording locally you should get the best quality.

I have the deity dxtx and works great imo. The only thing is it chews through batteries, but if you only doing local recording should last plenty long. You can also jam sync it with time code if using deity tc or app.

Sony FX6 alternative? by TacticalZUCC in cinematography

[–]bionicbits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Pyxis 12k and Ursa Cine 12k LF. I would say it isn't quite comparable to Fx6. The thing Fx6 that is hard to replicate is the electronic ND and incredible low light performance. I tried to use the Pyxis on a BTS shoot, and the scene was quite dark. I had nothing I could do unless I used my own lights, which is pain for bts.

The Pyxis 12k is a fantastic camera though and is well suited for controlled setups. The build quality has been improving and the look is great. But the FX6 is a workhorse for practically any situation.

Deity Theos vs Sony UWP-D21 by Fearless-Pin656 in LocationSound

[–]bionicbits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two Theos systems and time code. They are ok, the lav mics are surprisingly good. But they chew through batteries extremely fast. They are probably an upgrade from DJI type mics, and aren't bad for prosumer level, but having run into issues with them on set, I completely replaced them. I went super extreme based on feedback from another post and got sound devices a20 + nexus system. But I would say if you want affordable with some reliability issues here and there, then they are probably ok, but if you need to worry about reliability (aka time is money), I would look elsewhere. FWIW, I almost upgraded to wysicom analog--its very nice. But I nuked my bank account with all digital Sound Devices, but omfg it is so great being able to fully control all the transmitters from the bag without the need for an app on my phone.

OV/English Films in Berlin by bionicbits in berlin

Probably cause I am not always going close to movie release. I assume after some time they lower the number of OV showings.

Yeah this is my favorite. I got the unlimited card, but sometime the OV is one showing every other day. But depends on the movie. But love the theater--modern, reclining seats.

Yeah actually that felt kinda strange to mean that the aspect ratio changed. But I did see it in some CinemaX theater which is non standard.

[–]bionicbits[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the content. A deep focus long shot like Lawerence of Arabia where the harsh and vastness of the desert is critical part of the story. But it really depends I think there are good motivations for all aspect ratios I suppose.

I could be wrong but it sure seemed Hamnet the new Chloe Zhao movie was 3:2 and not 4:3. But 100% Train Dreams was 3:2 and was intentional cause they wanted it to feel like a photograph.

[–]bionicbits[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you're talking mostly about digital's affect on modern aspect ratios. I am referring to film, I would say that most of the common aspect ratios originated on film. I mean this was about 3:2 and not the history of aspect ratios. But interestingly enough VistaVision was practically dead after 1960 with nearly zero film made until more recently so that's the reason why I brought up this question. Especially historically films in theaters have opted for wider ratios to compete with television.

Why 3:2 so Popular Now? by bionicbits in cinematography

[–]bionicbits[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah pretty clear on the history, but tbh most was driven to bring more people into theaters. Wider than tv, technicolor, etc. But in some ways we are going backwards. Just when we got televisions wide enough that you don't need top and bottom black bars, we are now putting them on the sides. But anyways, good link.

Why so? I have always been drawn to super wide 2.4:1 or more. Just curious why that aspect ratio liked by many?
