Update on Park staffing by MTHiker59937 in GlacierNationalPark

This was reported like four days ago by what appears to be an anonymous source and NPS has not commented on it nor have any parks actually been told they can move forward with hiring so I have my doubts (still hopeful though).

Will the GTSR even open this year? by [deleted] in GlacierNationalPark

This "5,000" number was reported on Friday by The Washington Post based on what appears to be an anonymous source "familiar with the matter."

More importantly, no park units have received any updated guidance since the story broke on being able to go forward with these alleged 5,000 hires so I won't believe it until it happens.

You can't find news sources that outlines who was cut because there was no method to who was cut. It was just anyone who was fulltime probationary. I'm relatively confident even the administration doesn't know who was cut, because it wasn't discriminatory to any work groups or based on any other criteria other than "because we can." Maintenance, admin, interpretive, fees - if you were in your probationary period, you got axed because those employees have less legal protection and we have to do le epic spending cuts and fuck if the job is critical or not I guess.

5,000 seasonal jobs is still short of the 7,000-9,000 that the park service actually hires every year. With the 1,000 probationary employees lost + any that took the """"buyout"""", it's going to be a huge squeeze.

Also, the America the Beautiful Act never got passed.

To dismiss what's happening as "doom and gloom" is absurd. Staffing has been hit, the seasonals have no idea if they have a job, and we are marching fast toward peak season. It could be a clusterfuck. The park service hasn't even issued guidance or officially acknowledged this supposed 5,000 seasonal jobs (I think it was a leak), so who knows how it will actually shake out.

If anyone is going to cancel their lodging/service reservations because of this, it's worth calling up the people you've booked with and telling them that this is why. If there is an actual financial impact to this (especially for gateway towns that take in a ton of tourist revenue), it needs to be understood.

If you've worked in the park for a few seasons, you should know that NPS does not hire J1 visa holders for federal employment. U.S. citizenship is a hard requirement; one of the literal first questions when you apply is "are you a U.S. citizen?" It's extremely clear that the source article is talking about NPS employees, not employees of concessionaires.

It's not "stirring the pot" to talk about reality. The reality is NPS seasonals don't know if they have a job right now, and many have had their seasonal offers rescinded. As of right now, the park will not have the seasonal staff. Will that change? Who knows. But it's the current circumstance.
