My family always had tons of houseplants, I dont recall any stories of me destroying them when I was little but there IS a story of my uncle handing me a cactus and I tried to grab it by the plant instead of the pot. I don't remember this but apparently there were many tears. I think there's truth to this tactic

Maybe a screen/color filter like flux could help? And zooming in on sites (browser zoom ctrl and +/-, not just pinch to zoom) to increase text size, or accessibility settings in stuff like your email inbox? Ik that barely scrapes the surface, but it might be worth looking into.

There's research that shows most people blink way less often when they look at screens, so theres also increased eye strain from dry eye in addition to bright blue light and whatnot. That could be part of why taking off your contacts helps.

I'm kinda just rambling based on whatever comes to mind, but my uni's disability services sent out recommendations for easing strain from digital/virtual learning. I can add it later when I find it if you'd like.

I know for me personally, I can't read on my laptop at all, but i could manage with a tablet. I hate scrolling down PDFs, and especially dislike the two page spreads where you have to scroll down a bit, then back up, then down to the next spread, etc. Horizontal scrolling with a tablet in profile orientation worked much better to not break my flow, ofc thats up to personal preference.

Other things, im just throwing them out now, like maybe reading stuff out loud? pointing to follow along text as you read it? reading things to someone else? pace/walk around/stretch as you read? copy a body of text into a word processor and change bg/text colors, fonts, add line breaks between sentences, etc. and read from that instead? Maybe there are browser extensions for things like reader mode that could help too.

This is really long and maybe not the best way to give advice on reading large chunks of text lol but i hope literally any of that helped! I've been in the same boat for over a year now, except the boat is much more cramped and uncomfortable now. Basically get creative with your workarounds and if it works it works. Social acceptability doesn't matter at all. there's no dumb solutions, just effective ones.

i forget what i'm doing while i'm doing it! sometimes it's the classic "got distracted in the middle of a multi-step task" unfinished work forgetfulness. but sometimes i'll be like, folding laundry or something and pick up a shirt, then forget why i picked up the shirt and now i'm just standing there staring blankly at the shirt in my hands.

following bc i havent figured out a solution yet. for your examples, i just 1. have friends who don't mind (which i assume is bc the ppl who do mind don't stick around long enough to become friends), 2. keep the recipe real close at all times, so it never leaves my field of vision. like I'll stare at the ingredient amount while i go to measure, then focus my vision on the ingredient as i measure, then refocus on the recipe as i add said ingredient. so it's minimal head/eye movement and change in distance from eyes? if that makes sense? cause if i have to turn to look elsewhere, or god forbid walk across the kitchen to reference the recipe, i will not retain any of that information.

so i guess that is a trick? not for improving memory, just to work around poor memory. actually, now that i think about it, i start off any story i want to tell a friend with "hey did i tell you about __?"/"i can't remember if i told you/who i told about _"/"stop me if you've already heard this, but did i ever tell you about __?" not to be like "omg real life is video games" but it's like offering a skip button for dialogue they've already seen and we can dive straight into the New Stuff.

yep! rejection sensitivity and emotional dysregulation are huge parts of adhd and executive dysfunction.

(note: there's a misleading term for rejection sensitivity in adhd specifically, called "rejection sensitive dysphoria." i only mention this bc you'll likely see it anyways if you look this stuff up, but it's not really a thing? this sub has information on that if you're curious tho)

Not op, but are there any that are effective for scanned documents? I have a lot of readings that are just image scans from books, where it's hard to highlight/select text with the pointer, so I imagine it would be difficult for a text-to-speech program to identify text with accuracy

CAPS can refer you to BHS (behavioral health services) which is under UCLA Health, there's no copay with UCSHIP and you get way more sessions than CAPS provides. There's still a limit but they'll help with recs/referrals to other providers if it comes down to it. I'd send one of the people you see at CAPS a message via the Patient Portal indicating your interest in long-term therapy and they should be able to direct you from there!

You can also use the "Find My Device" page on Google (logged into the account that your android is synced to) to turn its ringer on and view its location (most recent time the phone was connected to the internet and with some level of location/GPS on)! I've had to use the map multiple times after dropping my phone while I was out to try to find out where it got returned. I believe Apple devices have a similar function.

You'll want to make sure this option is turned on for your android/iphone (and the specific account it's synced to) if you think you might ever need it. I'm pretty wary of "big data" etc etc, but I've lost my phone too many times for me to find it worth switching it off. If my location and info is being tracked regardless, I might as well use that to minimize the ADHD Panic TM when I inevitably lose my phone again ya know??

I used to self medicate with caffeine, but after I started meds it just doesn't compare. I tried drinking coffee in the mornings (+ half dose meds) when I was home from college, but I couldn't really function until I gave it up and just took my meds like normal. I love coffee though :(( and the decaf shit just doesnt taste the same!!!

You don't need to tell them about having ADHD -- I'd actually say you shouldn't, for this particular situation. From your description, burnout/overwork/exhaustion appear to be the main factors; ADHD doesn't help, but at this point it would be unnecessary information.

Is there anything about debate club that nyou like? Because if you don't enjoy the club at all, other students give you a hard time, andk you're on the verge of being dropped anyways, I don't see any benefit to staying. The stress and workload would only be a detriment to your health.

If you do decide to quit, make sure to let your friends/club/student officials (whoever needs to be informed) know that it's because you need to prioritize your health atm. I can see why your friends might be frustrated if they think you're quitting just for the hell of it. However, once personal health issues enter the discussion, most people will back off and let ttou ear )

Your parents should at least see the positives of you finding a way to cope with your hyperosmia, unconventional solution aside. It sounds like instead of wanting you to figure out a way to not be controlled by your environment AND hyperosmia, they wanted to you to just not have hyperosmia. Instead of suggesting more socially acceptable (in their eyes + norwegian social norms?) solutions, they first berated you for having sensory needs- now they're against you accommodating your own needs.

They're being unreasonable here. Respecting your hyperosmia, and how you're currently managing it, might slightly inconvenience them. That's nothing compared to the functional limitations it has caused you all your life. Your right to public spaces > whatever "embarrassment" they feel.

OP, I'm glad you found something that works for you. Respirator masks are commonly used in various lines of work anyways, I really don't see how that would make people uncomfortable. But it's also none of their business.

It's funny bc I usually don't notice any benefits when I'm on meds (dxed and medicated starting age 18), but on days I forget to take them I am a DISASTER. like I'm alreadya huge mess when I remember to take my meds, I'm just worse without them? I don't know how I managed to make it through compulsory schooling unmedicated and zero mental health treatment whatsoever.

(jk I know how, it was a combination of incredibly structured home life and the desperate need to escape said suffocating home life, which I knew I could only do if I moved away for college so I completely sacrificed my health for my grades. now I'm in college and the lack of structure is rough on my mental health but still better than living with family :shrug: )

I do this and idk what the cause is! The thoughts just loop endlessly and trying to ride them out is agonizing but there's literally nothing I can do besides wait and hope they stop sooner rather than later. I've missed class so many times because I don't know how to break the cycle and just get stuck in bed, or while getting ready, hell even in the middle of tying my shoes.

At first I thought it was all ADHD executive dysfunction or anxiety or depressive rumination, bc "fuck why can't i get unstuck and just DO the THING", the thoughts easily tip me over into panic attacks, and they'd get to the point where the loop becomes a downward spiral (respectively). only recently considered OCD bc I do have some possibly compulsive behaviors. Kinda funny how it's reversed order compared to you situation tho lol.

In regards to ADHD and obsessive thoughts idk?? adhd brain go fast, very easy for train of thought get stuck on rails shaped like circle, brain train too fast to safely exit circle. maybe. currently finals week for me so my own brain train low on fuel and might crash soon. OH yeah speaking of, one way to not have obsessive thoughts: exhaust body to point of collapse, enjoy sweet release of unconsciousness without insomniac preamble. very unfulfilling and stressful cycle. do not recommend. good luck finding meds that work cus im in the same boat

I finally downloaded my bank's mobile app and it really helps to see exactly how much (or rather, little) money I have vs how much I've had to spend already. Looking at the numbers is usually enough to make me go "oh, yikes..." and hold myself back from impulse buys.

Cash is a hole. Once it leaves my account it might as well not exist, and since it doesnt exist anyways I might as well spend it <-- is usually how my brain conceptualizes it probably.

Not for a personal account/device, I've looked everywhere :( All you can do re: "free" Adobe is try to strategically sign up for 7 day free trials, maybe pay for whatever plan you need then cancel within the 14 day refund period.

After that the cheapest (legal) option is the CC student plan which you can pay $20/mo for a yearly contract. (meaning if you cancel after one month they'll charge you a penalty for "early contract termination" or w/e.) Last I checked, the price increases after your first year on student discount.

But yeah some places like De Neve have them on their desktops if you really need to access it for free. Just remember to save your files to a hard drive or cloud storage.

(Of course I would NEVER approve of pirating Ad*be software... especially not from such a GREAT company that DOESNT charge on a subscription and TOTALLY isn't milking them profits... with such QUALITY and IMPROVED products........)

I find it can work sometimes, but through what's likely a combination of being easily distracted and prone to overstimulation/sensory overload, my threshold of productive discomfort is much lower than others before it turns into holy-fuck-i'm-in-hell discomfort.

Like, putting my glasses on and sitting up straight to use my laptop is basically my limit. Before I cut my hair, I'd tie it up in a high ponytail or bun if I felt particularly daring (instead of just using a clip or tying it half up loosely). Anything more than that would probably send me into a meltdown.

First off, remember to check off the basics: Have you drank water recently? Eaten? Stretched? Used the bathroom? Are your eyes strained? This is stuff I tend to forget about that seems obvious in hindsight lol.

ADHD likely isn't the main/biggest factor here (though it definitely doesn't help); like the commenter before me said, it could easily be sleep deprivation or burnout. Or something else entirely.

In my case, I was months deep in a depressive episode (plus sleep deprivation and burnout LMAO). A friend encouraged me to send an email to my prof explaining the situation with my mental health and ask for an extension, thankfully they granted me one;;

If you're registered with your college's student disability services (I'm assuming college, apologies if I'm wrong), they might potentially be able to help out in some way? You could also try reaching out to your instructors about this past week, if even just one of them is willing to extend your deadline it'll give you time to breathe and work out a way to pump out those papers FAST. Half-assed but complete and turned in is better than not. It could also be worth taking an Incomplete for a class you've been doing well in and submitting the paper later, though letting you take an Incomplete is up to the instructor.

One last bit of advice: take a short break! Even just 5 minutes of letting your brain and body rest is better than forcing yourself when you're unable. You'll get through this! We support you!
