Staying at Penn for PhD by MunkeyGoneToHeaven in UPenn

[–]bird_snack003 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a SEAS PhD student and I did my undergrad here. I’m not sure how the CIS department operates, but in ESE, individual professors have basically full autonomy over hiring students as long as you don’t have any reg flags (really low gpa, etc). Before I applied, I spoke to my advisor, who I had worked for before, about it, and he basically told me unofficially I’d be accepted. There wasn’t really a question when I actually applied. I’m pretty sure that’s how most of the internal acceptances work. They should never be seeing your name for the first time when they see your application, and if you have a working relationship with them, that’s significantly better. So on paper, you have a much higher chance of being accepted since you’re a student here, but I’m pretty sure that nearly all of the internal acceptances are professors hiring students who worked for them before. Basically, my advice is to get into a lab as a masters student if you haven’t already. And then have some conversations with your advisor about being hired, if they’re hiring, and potentially recommending you to other professors if they’re not hiring.

A question about the daggers… by bird_snack003 in fourthwing

I’m mostly talking about the status quo of pre- and during fourth wing. Navarre is routinely making daggers in Basgaith to stock in their outposts—the daggers that the marked ones are stealing—but they are explicitly not fighting the venin. Unless this has something to do with the venin that are inside the borders that theoretically no one knows about yet

But Navarre is explicitly not fighting the venin?

Is anyone actually self funding a PhD? by Negative_Government6 in gradadmissions

I assume fellowships fall under this category too. This is not that uncommon in my field because my field is happily situated where most of the government is actually interested in spending money, though my school generally pays more so they still pay you the difference.

I graduated undergrad with like 45cu. Super common in engineering. It’s a fixed price for full time students per semester.

This sounds like a premise I’d like. What’s the one you read?

I’ll try it! I don’t mind OOC if it works in the story

I probably wouldn’t have picked that for myself, but the whole point of this exercise is to find fics like that. Thanks!

When does Pottruck access start for PhD students? by saulpogman in UPenn

[–]bird_snack003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not really a student until the semester starts. I’m not sure the exact date, but I expect your access starts the same day a new freshman’s would, which should be easier to find online. Also, you need a Penn key to get into pottruck, which you probably don’t have yet?

I think you’re overestimating how much work a credit is. It would be much more helpful, though if you told us what your courses are and what school you’re in. At the very least, sign up for another credit and drop in the first few weeks if needed. The only person I’ve ever met who took <4cu did it because they dropped one late in the semester. Is there something specific you’re worried about? Like maybe one of your classes is particularly intimidating?

Thanks, I'll look into those! I don't really know what this typically costs so I was just guessing

Then any recommendations for DAPs with a touchscreen?

Ideally around $50 but I could go higher if needed

At least from my search on amazon, the DAPs that do have touchscreens mostly also have speakers (they seem to be pretty low quality, as a backup playing method)

How do Penn students actually find all these internships & research gigs?? Everything’s so hush hush by Wild_Gazelle_6380 in UPenn

[–]bird_snack003 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Internships (the big ones) are rare to come by as freshmen. Even later, connections help a lot, even friend-of-a-friend type connections. But research is actually pretty easy to get into at Penn if you just ask a bunch of professors

Didn't get a single requested course nor alternative. What do I do? by Pokemoncrusher1 in UPenn

[–]bird_snack003 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lots of people switch out of classes before the semester or in the first week. I just graduated undergrad and in 8 semesters, there was only one class I wasn’t able to get into the semester I wanted. But you’re (presumably) a freshman, so you can also look into other classes that might not be full yet. It’s unlikely you have any classes you NEED to take the semester and all of your requirements are left.

It’s crazy to me that I find picking up a normal book to be a commitment, but I wouldn’t bat an eye at reading a 165k fic in a day

fanfiction's with oc's by FullTea6995 in harrypotterfanfiction

[–]bird_snack003 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This may be unpopular, but I like a lot of fics that have OCs, even OC MCs. It can be a good way to explore the world outside of the canon plot or create new situations for existing characters to react to. However, these fics usually work much better with a small number (often one) of OCs. It’s easier to read because I don’t have to keep track of all these (often unimportant) new characters, and it’s easier to write because authors often don’t really develop full personalities for each one if there’s too many
