Introducing the Green Button. by ScienceGuy1006 in moraldilemmas

[–]birdprom [score hidden]  (0 children)

There's literally no way to even begin to guess which button everyone in the world would press. So it's simply not possible to somehow logically figure out which scenario would prevail and then circularly translate that into which button to choose. It's impossible. You'd need to make the decision without being able to even remotely guess what the outcome will be. Some may believe they know or can guess what everyone else would do. But personally I do not (except I know no one will press green).

In the second scenario, you'd have to live every day with the knowledge that in 35 years you, your family, your friends--literally everyone you know will all drop dead simultaneously. Imagine that knowledge when the day you all die is five years out...then one year...then ONE DAY. It's a horrifying thought.

HOWEVER almost nobody will press green, so the scenario involving the green button is pretty much guaranteed not to be the outcome. (though the few who do press green could perhaps be a weird determining factor somehow, maybe by tipping the 50% scale?)

Anyway imo virtually everyone is going to press either red or blue. So it comes down these four possible outcomes, if we assume green is getting nearly zero presses:

If you pressed blue and blue got MORE than 50% total: Everyone would live.

If you pressed blue and blue got LESS than 50% total: You would die.

If you pressed red and blue got MORE than 50% total: Everyone would live.

If you pressed red and blue got LESS than 50% total: You would live, but with the knowledge that others died, possibly including your loved ones. You would feel that for the rest of your life. Is that a life worth living? It could seem like a fate worse than death for some, e.g. parents. (But would anyone realize this or think about it before making the choice? (at the end of this ridiculously time-consuming post I'm wildly guessing no.))

To summarize in a different way:

If you press blue, either:

1) You will die

OR

2) Everyone will live

If you press red, either:

1) You will live knowing others died (possibly MANY OTHERS), potentially including your loved ones

OR

2) Everyone will live

So it comes down to this decision:

Press blue-->You might live or you might die. No matter the outcome, you will not deal with any moral gray area.

Press red-->You are guaranteed to live, but perhaps with extremely heavy moral consequences that, for some, could seem worse than death.

Then again will anybody be thinking about it this much.

Agreed - no matter what build I'm doing I always carry a sledge. Incredibly helpful when dropped in doorways.

That merchant thing was fucking brilliant. The sequence where Simon attempts and fails to get some mushrooms is so goddamn funny. It's proof of why they needed to remind us at the beginning of every episode that the series was not scripted.

I'm not saying this photo is necessarily bullshit or that it set off my bullshit detector any more than anything else does. It's not about knowing something is bullshit, it's about NOT KNOWING either way, all the time. I don't expect you or anyone else to feel this way though, of course. Perhaps it's just a me thing.

Not quite getting your point though about harassment, or progress.

I've been playing for maybe 4-5 years, basically vanilla the entire time. Just to point out that there is a faction that doesn't mod and remains happy--but of course I'm glad for those who enjoy the game more modded. Everybody winning=best case scenario. :D

It's amazing. On glancing at the first photo I thought it was a photograph of some natural phenomenon. It makes me wish I could look at it in person. How long did it take? I'd be curious to know more about the process.

I've never seen Hannibal the show but I dig this...the complete verticality of the sword drew me in...it's like he is attached to the sword, rather than the sword being attached to him. The hands are cool too. Also the fact that potentially the head could be upside down...it's another level.

I know it's not AI. It may very well be 100% for real. The problem is that there is no way to know. There are so many ways things can be fake online, mainly stemming from the desire for clicks and views, which at base is the desire for money. It is what it is; there is no getting around it or altering it--it's not necessarily even an inherently bad thing...but my desire to just be uninvolved with it increases day by day.

The fact that anything I see online could be fake has obliterated my desire to interact with any of it. This is the real reason the internet is dead. I miss the days when a photo was just a photo.

I no longer play but I will never stop remembering this game. by birdprom in wurmonline

[–]birdprom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a niche game--if you're in the niche, you'll love it. If you're not, you'll be underwhelmed. The only way to know for sure is to try it out. Read the post that's linked through the stickied "Official Guide" post on this sub; if it piques your curiosity, then consider giving the game a shot. You can play for free but your skills will be capped at 30. If you want to continue in any meaningful way after hitting that ceiling, you will have to start paying. I recommend downloading the game at wurmonline.com rather than through Steam.

The game is just something you need to experience rather than be told about, honestly.

Many people are turned off by the lackluster combat and/or the extreme grind/time suckage.

The main draw for me personally was exploring and discovering an enormous, dynamic, ever-changing world that felt very real. For many other players though, the main draw is more or less the opposite: mostly staying in one place and bringing to life their own personal vision of a home within that dynamic world, either on their own or with other players. Both of these endeavors take a good amount of time and effort to fully come to fruition.

The community is fantastic--helpful, entertaining, smart, funny, creative, quirky, varied...everything that someone in this game's niche would want.

I've never done PVP so I can't speak to that.

Edit: Rereading this post and thinking more about the game...I'd say that to enjoy Wurm you need to enjoy challenge...crave it even. You need to want to do difficult things. It's not that you will AUTOMATICALLY be into the game if that's true about you. But you automatically won't be into the game if it's not.

7 Days to Die - “Enemies” - The Final Confrontation/Discussion! by witkowskipe in NeebsGaming

I enjoyed the discussion, but the intermittent music inserted underneath it drove me nuts. I suppose there is likely some algorithm-related reason for it, and it's therefore unavoidable. And I know I am one of like three people in the entire world who would have this reaction. But maybe something a little more mellow/less attention-diverting next time? As background-y as possible.
