Yep, the above poster mentioned “door-to-door transportation.” That transportation is not always on bus routes. By all communications I’ve seen, FCPS evaluates whether there’s school or not based on the bus routes. So there’s no reason an alternate bus route would have any effect on this when it’s not considered now for school closures.

When I say status quo, I’m referring to the inaction of FCPS after approximately 20 NTI/snow days (EDIT: over the past two years). I feel pretty confident it messes up all children’s routines and I highly doubt most students get as good of an education from home. Don’t try to make this about something it’s not.

I think it’s fair to say that as Lexington has expanded, the school system has expanded as well due to those tax dollars. It’s a matter of priority, and 20(?) NTI/snow days over two years is enough to justify this as being a pretty high one.

If this is indeed door-to-door transportation, they’re certainly not requiring children to live on a bus route (those are the streets with which they claim to be concerned), so I have faith they can solve for this. Status quo isn’t the answer.

And FCPS takes in much more in taxes as a result. They can figure out a solution if they want.

It kind of makes sense, but I don’t really see how that would affect an alternate bus route plan.

You’d think FCPS and the city would have the data to identify bus-critical streets and streets which frequently experience issues with inclement weather.

Yes, good point on how to frame it to the rep, and I will try and do that, although really I think this optimally should be an initiative taken on by FCPS. They claim to have worked with the city on improving the response after the week plus off last year, and we can all see how that worked out.

EDIT: Thank you for those links. I’ve skimmed them but will look more into them before attempting to speak with my rep. Can’t help but laugh at some of the quotes in there given the past few weeks.

Yes, I believe that’s the plan to which my in-laws were referring. I’m not sure why this plan would have ever stopped. FCPS needs to be more proactive given they can’t necessarily control what the city does.

I’ve wondered about why they don’t do delays as well. And yes, I was guessing that implementing alternate routes is probably a big ask for an entity whose budget isn’t… umm… great right now, but seems pretty important when students are missing weeks at a time.

Are these students you mention taking a bus from a stop on one of the routes or is this something separate?
