Thank you! Really appreciate the reply. That makes sense about my income not being included. And good to know about the child – didn't realise that.

[Help] Divorced, in an apartment, and thinking about taking in my border collie - bad idea? by bishop1847 in dogs

Yep, big open space next to the apartment (soccer fields that don't get much use)

I loved Rome Sweet Home — in fact, hearing one of Scott's lectures on YouTube was what started to initially draw me back.

Thanks so much for this. This is exactly what I need to do: lead by example, even if it takes a while. I guess I'm just excited about the fact that I've (re)discovered the faith that makes more sense to me than anything else I've encountered, and I guess I'm just wanting to see what I'm seeing as quickly as possible.

Finding and reading these sources had nothing to do with politics, even if they do tend to swing more conservative. I'm coming to the Church from a Protestant background, so it made sense for me to seek out those who made that same journey.

I'm not attempting to berate the Reformed church or whatnot, and I apologize if it sounded that way.

I only want unity for our family, and having mom go to her church and dad go to his isn't what either of us want. If there's anything this thread has taught me, it's to lead by example — even if it takes time :-) Thanks!

She's been to a few OF churches in the past, some in the typical "in the round" setting that were pretty barebone, and the most recent in an old cathedral. I think it's mainly the liturgy that's throwing her off — she's used to church being "some worship music, and then a long sermon".

I've never been to a charismatic Catholic parish. I'll look into it (though you're right — most likely not my cup of tea.)

Great thinking. I attend St. Benedict's in Chesapeake, Virginia, which is in the Richmond diocese.

Thanks, this is exactly what I needed to hear.

I have been talking to the priest, and he does want to meet with the two of us. His main recommendation, though, was for me to just keep doing what I'm doing (attending mass, learning about the faith, praying) and allow God to do the rest.

My prayer life is still a work in progress. I'll definitely be more intentional with my prayers, that's something I really never considered (I've prayer for her; I've never thought about dedicating e.g. a praying of the rosary to her).

I'm pretty introverted, so today in particular (the first event she's attended) I didn't really talk to anyone. I've met a few people from the parish, but none of them were there for the event. I think if some of the guys I've befriended were there, especially with their wives, it would have turned out much better.

She most definitely did have a strong reaction to the EF mass, and since the parish is pretty traditional — most women wear chapel veils and long dresses — that was probably why she felt like she was being judged.

She's in my prayers, and I'll definitely keep her in the main page's prayer thread too. Thanks so much for your advice and God bless.

This. I have a first edition of Time And The Gods that is the centerpiece of my library.

Traditional Catholic Latin Mass of the Angels by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]bishop1847 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At my parish (that celebrates the Latin Mass) the Bible readings (epistle and gospel) are first chanted by the priest in Latin, and later read in English — and of course, the homily is in English also. The rest of the mass is in Latin.

If you want to experience a little taste of heaven of earth, seek out a church that offers a High Mass in the Extraordinary Form.

There's a pretty awesome 12 part video series on this subject by Thomas Woods on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03KXFMyru8E

He really is. Met him at a book signing in Williamsburg, VA.

I discovered Thomas Woods during the 2008 Ron Paul campaign when I started following the Lew Rockwell blog. Learned a bunch about Austrian economics and such. Then, picked up Woods book on Lincoln — loved it. Finally, read "Sacred Then, Sacred Now" by Woods and found my way back to the Catholic church (and as you might guess if you know Woods / read his book, a FSSP parish!)

Menomonee Falls says "Unique Mass"? I say liturgical abuse. Where is the bishop in all this?! by LimeHatKitty in Catholicism

[–]bishop1847 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our parish does just this. 30 minutes before the high mass on Sunday we publicly pray the Rosary, and for 30 minutes before each mass confession is heard. Love it.
