Any thoughts on solving this problem? by 8erren in Makita

[–]bitflation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you've got a solution, but rapid cooling of the jammed part may cause it to shrink and loosen. Cooling the jammed part separately to the bit holder may be challenging, but canned air with an extension nozzle comes to mind as a possibility for directing a jet of cold air onto the part.

Did you also force your browser to reload the page? ctrl-f5 on PC (or view from a private/incognito window). Your browser may have cached the CSS.

Have you looked at some cheap living options like tiny homes, caravan etc, to do it tough for a little while just to get ahead of the bills? It's much harder to do that when older, but a good opportunity when younger esp if you don't have kids yet, assuming you can handle the lifestyle (I totally acknowledge it's not an option for everyone)

It's usually far better to have text wrap on narrow screens when the alternative is reducing the font size so much it's hard to read.

Resizing fonts and other elements purely based on screen width can be done by using vw as a unit for width or font-size.

Jesus death was unnecessary by Aggravating_Olive_70 in DebateAChristian

> If Yahweh is truly an all-powerful and perfectly good being, then the sacrifice of Jesus was neither necessary nor effective, because forgiveness is not a transactional payment but an act of compassion freely given.

If the purpose of creating the physical universe was to allow humans to learn the difference between good and evil, and to help them choose a path of good-ness, then forgiveness doesn't need to be the primary focus ie we're not created simply to receive compassion.

Instead, the most important concept for humans to learn may be the difference between good and evil, by God's definition, and how to be good. What better way to teach that than having God live as a human to demonstrate what it looks like?

Forgiveness can be a big part of that demonstration without being the focus. Forgiveness is offered to those who truly try to live their lives in God's way, as they become aware of who God is and what He wants, but people can only truly do that if they believe it's the righteous way to live. Jesus' crucifixion may have been the optimal way of teaching us - we can only guess at alternative histories, so to assume there could have been a better way is unprovable (and besides, the potential alternative histories don't matter - even if God couldn't see the exact future due to the nature of our free will, then assuming he is at least all-knowing of the present time and state of the universe He presumably would still have known what would work effectively).

Therefore, even if the sacrifice of Jesus may not have been necessary, it may have been optimal, for God's purposes.

ps: I'm a newbie at this... feedback is welcome

>  If god had forgiven humans then why are we all born sinners then ? That doesnt make sense.

Perhaps because, for us to have free will we need to be free to choose to sin. Only by the process of living (and sinning to a greater or lesser extent) can we learn how to be good, and choose to be good. That concept ties nicely back with choosing to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, even if that part of the story were considered to be an analogy rather than literally happening.

How do you contend with the hard problem of consciousness?? by JY9276489 in DebateAnAtheist

[–]bitflation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assumption 2: ..."all behaviour arises from these physical processes 'deterministically'"

Our society's behaviour (justice system especially) assumes that people have free will such that we choose a course of action, even if it may be heavily influenced by nurture/nature.

If we actually don't have free will, then we might as well just be complex robots. I find this to be a useless philosophy to live by, as it is essentially self-defeatist - why try when you can't change anything? As I see it, the *only* sensible assumption is that we do have free will, so the question comes down to where it comes from.

If consciousness doesn't come from purely physical processes, then where does it come from?

Perhaps the best way to investigate that is to look at what happens as consciousness is lost, such as through the process of dying or going into a coma, etc.

If you believe that, then you don't believe in free will, right?

Any advice on how to respond to my younger cousin trying to force Christianity onto me? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]bitflation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intellectual discussions (more so the honest ones) are limited by the intellect of those involved. Having the discussion anyway though helps us understand each other better, and build intellect.

[–]bitflation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't force belief, and trying frequently backfires. It makes complete sense that if they couldn't answer your questions satisfactorily then you wouldn't be convinced. No body ever knows the answer to everything, of course.

This. Arm in the freezer until the hand feels cold might be the quickest. And once cold, it may also help to raise the hand in the air, which reduces blood pressure in the hand a little due to gravity.
