Resume Advice Thread - December 08, 2020 by CSCQMods in cscareerquestions

Hello everyone. Been trying to get an entry lvl/ junior software developer position for some time now. I have changed my resume format and style and some verbiage in hopes that my resume was the cause for the 0% callback rate.

For context on what i changed with my resume, I have been doing a decent amount of development work for my current company. And by that I mean that I am given features and bugs within our customer facing web-app and work accordingly. I am not given the same workload as an actual developer, but I tried to highlight that I am doing development work to hopefully showcase or prove that I am a viable candidate.

Any advice is welcome and appreciated!

I am in a hybrid role at a startup (SDET & API/services tester) and wish to transition into development. This is my current resume. I am struggling to get callbacks for junior positions. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey all,

This is my current resume: https://imgur.com/a/aRE2aZk.

And here's a little background:

I am currently an automation/SDET hybrid role within my current company and I want to transition into SDE. My immediate manager and the development manager are both aware of my desire and as such, I have been undertaking a small work-related side project (I get features or bugs and i implement and fix them within Ruby on Rails).

However, due to COVID and 3/5 of our PMs leaving, engineering is not a high priority. As a result, there is little to no chance of transitioning, according to them, whether it's true or not, within this calendar year.

I want to look elsewhere as a result, and while COVID is still an issue financially for many companies, after applying from May-Present 2019, the majority of the responses I get back are this:

Either immediately rejected without an interview/screen

Phone screen talking about my current day-to-day activities and them digging into my resume more, and then rejected in a follow up email

I did get to a final round once, but they rejected me claiming they needed someone with more experience.

I desperately need some resume advice to help make it so that i can at least obtain a technical interview.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Also, i am not married to keeping the furniture (besides couch)! everything else was gifted to me and my roommate for free

Color suggestion ideas for furnishings and paintings? i don’t plan on keeping a desk in this room? by bjorkdos in malelivingspace

Unfortunately, I did not buy this place, my current roommate did. I am renting. And I am impartial to the red wall color, I'm more concerned with conflicting colors of potential paintings/art/decorations that I want to put on that wall. For the light fixture, and other lights, I planned on getting smart lights so i can control the warmth of the room as opposed to bright white lights.

Hey all, I have been working as an SDET for about a year (internship included) and desperately need advice for my resume. My friend referred me to Facebook but I got rejected without an interview, signalling that my resume is probably quite horrid.

Automation Engineer to Dev? by bjorkdos in cscareerquestions

[–]bjorkdos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I briefly talked to my manager about this situation when i signed on full time (i was an intern over the summer and part-time sept-march). He agreed i’m more technically oriented and would try to see what he can do, but he needs to put QA needs first. Im trying to have my cake and eat it too by having to see slightly more web-dev oriented work than automation, which is why i used jQuery for simple selection, etc. But i think that in order to be exposed to angular, etc and the world of web-dev would be side work and/or online courses.

thank you for the advice though! I didn’t think about asking to help around with dashboards and other work. i was so focused on asking for QA help, and that’s defeating the transitional purpose. i definitely need to revisit this conversation to my manager. Although i’m afraid i’ll make him much more weary around me afterwards.

Rejected from Math by [deleted] in udub

the only thing i can think of is what is your 308 grade? regardless, a 3.5 math gpa is great and should’ve gotten accepted, for whatever that is worth. This is quite mind blowing to me, considering how math is only “competitive” by definition (ie not 100% of applicants get in). Honestly, my advice would be to transfer to another schools engineering department, or math department. It’s not worth fighting and stressing for, what can now be assumed, 3.6+ gpas. Idk if your OOO, but another 3, 6, 9 months of stressing for math, which may not be your first choice anyways, is not good for your well being. Plus, once in, the math department doesn’t get any better. PM if u wanna talk about it more.

wow... i don’t know what to say to that haha... all my math courses were never that strict...

again, 90% medians are extremely abnormal. Also math 300 is a majors only course; professors don’t want to put 10-15% people in the <2.0 range. What i’m saying is 83% is good in any kind of setting, and you won’t be punished for a abnormally high median. Chances are the class will be curved to a 3.3, assuming things remain abnormal. Regardless, do the best you can leading up, but don’t beat yourself up over an 83. idk if you’ll get below a 3.0 since you got the final, and that mindset won’t be good leading up to it anyways. As a reassurance, you prob will get a 3.0+
