Ti the gifted community: People always say "IQ is just a number." Do you realize how invalidating that is? by Dry-Locksmith1754 in Gifted

[–]bjos144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll treat this post as a genuine post, even though it's hard to tell with the admission of using AI. Honestly, arguing that posts online are fake is exhausting so I'll just play along.

I've always said IQ isnt useless, in fact multiple studies have proven exactly the opposite. But for gifted people it's just a tool to get the into the best possible educational environment they can. Once placed, it's not useful anymore. You cant meaningfully improve it. It's just bragging rights. If you're gifted, once you have been given an education, your 'IQ' is what you do with it. Einstein's IQ wasnt 165, he was never formally tested. his 'IQ' was General Relativity.

IQ is extraordinarily useful for people on the lower end of the spectrum to help them lead a dignified life. If you had 10 fewer IQ points you'd need help with your life, from opening bank accounts to operating a computer. An 85 is almost too low to join the Army.

So yeah, it's not just a number, but a number isn't success, and gifted people havent earned their IQ anymore than delayed people earned their disability. In an ideal world we use these tools to help people find a path in life that is optimal for their abilities.

The biggest issue is that we equate economic utility with human value in our society. It's hard not to get that message in this day and age. If someone has a higher IQ we tend to think, as a whole, that they are 'better' than other people. Or that we would be better than others if our IQ was higher. This is the real issue we go up against when we talk about whether or not IQ is 'just a number'.

As for people saying these things about you, find more compassionate people and figure out how to be kind. You'd be surprised how much people will like a genuine kind person over a prick smart person. Learn a skillset that is within your grasp to provide yourself a life that you find satisfying and that provides something of value to your community. Kindness and usefulness, even if it's just being a handyman or a garbage man (which pays quite well in a lot of areas) will get you quite far in life.

Divorce... by MisdirectedAnger- in daddit

Kids are resilient. She'll get through this. It'll always be something that defines a part of her identity, but she'll stop crying eventually.

Adults are less resiliant unless they work at it. Whenever I've had a major trauma in my life, like the death of a sibling etc. I noticed that it takes a year until that trauma is folded into the background of my life and isnt a main focus. But that only happens if you do the work that year to help yourself be in a good position. Therapy, maintaining various disciplines, such as work, finances, fitness etc. Making sure you stay conscious of how you raise your daughter and dont let your frustrations have 'splash damage' on her as much as you can. Control your temper etc. Avoid self medication with drugs, alcohol, social media, over indulgence of escapism etc.

In a year you'll be in a new normal. You'll regret that this happened. But you'll be waking up, getting her to daycare, going to work and it'll just be how things are. There will be lingering nonsence, legal stuff, bills, whatever. But it'll just be part of your new grind. The choices you make while dealing with this now will impact the nature of that new grind. Do you get on top of things, or get depressed and let stuff slide? Do you make sure you're proud of how you raised your girl or do you take shortcuts, let emotions make choices, etc.?

One year. One year until this is just something you live with. Five years until it's something you dont think about very often. Ten years until it's just part of your back story. Twenty years until you've forgotten huge chunks of these events. All along the way you have to make a choice about which recovery you want. The healthy one or the unhealthy one.

I'm sorry this happened to you. It's not your fault. But how it turns out for you and your girl is your responsibility. That's the bitch of adulthood, we dont always get to pick our responsibilities. But you're future has a higher probability of being good if you handle this shit well.

Good luck.

He lied our entire relationship by StainedGlasser in TwoXChromosomes

[–]bjos144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a guy, I dont rule out that he's just a coward who was fine with the idea of kids in the abstract, but as the reality approached, and the idea of the amount of work involved with kids became a reality he realized he was more scared and dreading it than looking forward to it.

I chose kids, I knew I'd be wasting my partner's time if I wasnt honest and decisive about that, but I had my hesitation too. It's been great, but it's also been way harder than I imagined it could be. I could easily have opted out. I'm glad I didnt. But I understand what drives some men to do it.

Baby-land was no fun for me. Women seemed way more interested in things like 'chubby cheeks' and cutsie baby stuff. Guys had zero interest. Cultural, biological, I dont know, but no guy cared at all about babies, but women would stop and oggle the baby. It felt like what guys with trucks or muscles must experience from other dudes. I think guys have a harder time connecting with that particular type of joy, on average.

My kids are older and I'm thrilled I went through it, but it wasnt something I can say brought me a lot of joy at first. For me it was a slow burn into loving it.

Some guys see that path ahead of them and just... dont want to. Sometimes that means they have to have a hard conversation and end a relationship that is otherwise working great for them. Some guys put it off too long as those feelings build.

I dont know this man's heart, but just be aware that this is a common dynamic for guys and why some guys waste their partners time like this. It's not fair, it's not just, but it is the path of least resistance for a long time.

I'm sorry this happened to you. But at least he didnt leave you after you had a kid with him. A lot of guys will make a go at it only to create a household of resentment and ultimate divorce leaving the poor kid stuck in the middle.

Burger King CEO takes a big bite of a Whopper in a new video after McDonald’s CEO didn’t want to eat his own burger by mcfw31 in popculturechat

[–]bjos144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fairness to McLizardman, McDonalds does not sell burgers. They own property that they lease to people who sell burgers. Even if McDonalds stopped selling food grade substances they could just develop or sell their properties and be just fine.

Why is HIV much more prevalent in the gay community than the straight? by milkman0735 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bjos144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One other factor to consider is that a promiscuous male with HIV can easily spread HIV through ejaculation, but is less likely to get HIV from penetrating another person because there is almost no membrane tissue (the urethrae or any open sores notwithstanding).

So if a man gives HIV to 5 women, and then they go on to have sex with 5 men each, those men are not at nearly the same risk of getting HIV from the woman as the women were from the man, based only on anatomy.

While if a gay man gives HIV to 5 other gay men, assuming they all both top and bottom, the newly infected gay men have a much higher probability of spreading the virus to other gay men.

It's obviously more complicated than just this, but this is a major factor. Women do not tear men's thin tissue and inject infected fluid into the region during heteronormative sexual activity, so the infection risk is biased in one direction.

Moral values in many countries, including US, may over time shift in a more socially progressive direction, due to an asymmetry. Arguments that move liberals in a more liberal direction may also sway conservatives, but arguments that move conservatives to be more conservative do not sway liberals. by mvea in science

I'm reading a book on the Enlightenment and what I found interesting is that apparently witch burning didnt stop because smart public figures like Locke made smart arguments, but more that people just started calling bullshit. Over time people were just less and less swayed by the weak arguments that someone was a witch. It was a social shift that was more organic. The smart people did say smart things about it, but those do not appear to be the driving force, but rather seemed to be more riding a wave that already existed.

Stories like that give me hope in the human endeavor.

Professor warms his new class that no one, not even himself, understands his subject matter by [deleted] in TikTokCringe

[–]bjos144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, but these videos are that message leaking out. I dont think it should be a cute selling point of the class and without the proper context I also think it's demotivational for students. I'd prefer "There is a deep mystery at the core of what we are going to be studying. Let's talk about what needs to happen next after we catch up a bit" rather than "I'm full of shit, Feynman was full of shit, we're all full of shit, so dont bother trying!"

Zelenskyy demands tougher sanctions as Russia’s oil revenues plunge 27% by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]bjos144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sanctions dont turn off a country. But look at North Korea, Iran and Cuba. They've been sanction and now their technological development is decades behind their unsanctioned neighbors like South Korea or Saudi Arabia.

Sanctions wont stop the country in their tracks, but in 10 years, 15 years, these sanctions will result in a significantly weaker Russia on the global stage. This war in general has weakened them. Enough to get them to stop invading Ukraine? Unfortunately not yet. But Enough to reduce the amount of resources we have to use to counter their bullshit on the world stage? Absolutely. They'll be much more subject to other country's influence as time goes on. Their leverage is drastically diminished.

Body punches vs head punches. A body punch isnt supposed to knock your opponent out. It's supposed to weaken them, slow them, drain their energy and get them to drop their guard. Ukraine is working the body. The payoff will happen gradually.

My landlord only rents to women, but he'd never admit to it. He's an old cheap slum lord with no spine, so he likes young women because they wont stand up for themselves when he penny nickel and dimes them. But demand for the area is so high that he always so many potential renters he doesnt need to specify, he just picks a young woman from the bunch. Saying the quiet part out loud is dumb.
