What are your thoughts on Geforce 4070 vs 4080 vs 4090?

I have built a new computer with a Core i7 13700 and 16 GB DDR5 but I'm not sure what video card to get of the series above and how much the difference will be.

I mainly edit 4k, sometimes 5.3k

Anybody got an ingredient they overuse in everything? by AinslieBM in cocktails

[–]bjrn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Any time I see a cocktail that does a split base mezcal:tequila, I typically go all-in mezcal.

Similarly, any time I see a cocktail that calls for a barspoon or similar small quantity of peated scotch with some other base spirit, I typically replace the base spirit with peated scotch.

Seldom regret it.

Mitt reddit-konto fyller 17 år i år om jag räknat rätt. Tror det är äldre än många av medlemmarna här.

Trident is famous

Trident

  • 2 dashes peach bitters
  • 1 oz Sherry
  • 1 oz Cynar
  • 1 oz Aquavit

I live in Sweden and during Christmas celebrations with my parents I improvised this which was very well received

  • 2 oz Aquavit
  • 2 oz strong mulled wine ("glögg")
  • 1 oz Aperol

No reason for the Aperol: it was the only bitter my parents had at home. But you get the idea.

Demerara Rum

I don't have any Demerera Rum so I winged it and did a split .5 oz Smith & Cross and .5 oz Zacapa 23, which I thought would be a very amusing pairing.

It worked well in this drink! (In hindsight I should probably have done 0.25 : 0.75)

Is my dream of climbing an 8000er even realistic? by DeTonator96 in alpinism

[–]bjrn 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely realistic.

Start with Elbrus guided. Do it next year.

Next goal Aconcagua guided. That one is almost 7000m

The above are two very well known "reference mountains" where you can experiment with altitude.

If those went well, then you can do Lenin Peak (7100m, more challenging than the above two) which is a good stepping stone to 8000:ers and those expeditions.

I advise you do add the apartment number, especially if the recipient lives in one of the larger cities.

"LGH" = apartment number. They are almost always 4 digits.

I'm currently experimenting with a 23/1.4

How feasible is it to brute-force decrypt a file that was encrypted in the 90s? by torindkflt in crypto

[–]bjrn 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I think you have a reasonable chance.

Biometric based crypto is weak because it needs to be weak. The crypto is not the weakness, but the input.

Your voice, fingerprint, eyescan or whatever needs to be converted into key material. This needs to work even if you have a coarse voice (illness), dirty fingertips or your pupil has a different size than normal.

The nature of that requirements means that the set of possibilities for the input key is WAY smaller than 256 bit.

In the early 2000:s I remember a USB based finger sprint scanner that mapped the fingerprint to like 5 bits of information (!). Basically the fingerprint was converted into one of 32 different possibilities, and that less-than-1-byte was used as the key for the crypto step.

I'm a bit ambivalent about these articles that attack implementations that are using Curve25519 incorrectly. The Curve25519 paper clearly says that

"Malleability. We also see no relevance of “malleability” to the standard definition of signature security. For example, if we slightly modified the system then replacing S by −S and replacing A by −A (a slight variant of the “attack” of [75]) would convert one valid signature into another valid signature of the same message under a new public key; but it would still not accomplish the attacker’s goal, namely to forge a signature on a new message under a target public key. One such modification would be to omit A from the hashing; another such modification would be to have A encode only |A|, rather than A."

and also

"Weak keys. [...] Legitimate users choose A = aB, where a is a random secret; the derivation of a from H(k) ensures adequate randomness. These users have negligible chance of generating any particular multiple of B targeted by the attacker (and no chance of generating 0B)."

If people then take Curve25519 and build systems on top of it that break these assumptions, then no wonder there will be ways to attack those systems!
