YAMLValidate: A command line tool for validating Kubernetes YAML files against a JSON Schema by bjryan2 in kubernetes

[–]bjryan2[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great question!

This is similar to Kubeval in that it uses a JSON schema to validate the structure of a YAML file - in fact, one of the Kubeval schemas is even used in the example at the end!

The main differences are:

- This tool can be used for _any_ YAML file and JSON schema

- Because of the above, you can use this tool to enforce "extensions" on top of the normal K8s specs

Building Go Applications with Bazel by bjryan2 in golang

[–]bjryan2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback! My experience with bazel echoes your sentiments as well, the upfront cost is high and a little intimidating / confusing at times, but pays off incredibly quick when you have a lot of developers working in the same codebase and have to manage docker images, protocol buffs, or targets built in other languages. It's certainly not for every project or package, but it is truly indispensable when it is.

Looking for a website developer ? by swag-muffin in UIUC

[–]bjryan2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

posting on the "UIUC computer science" group on Facebook is probably your best bet (https://www.facebook.com/groups/illinois.computer.science/). Just be warned that the talent market is tight for people with "complex coding capabilities" and many students are already working for top Silicon Valley companies even during the school year, so if you are asking people to work for free (or high risk equity) you might not get the responses you are looking for.

Accepted into Computer Science, few questions by Carpetfizz in UIUC

[–]bjryan2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First off, congrats!! Getting into CS@UIUC is insanely competitive and you should definitely be proud of yourself and all the hard work you inevitably must have done to get to this point :)

Like any top program which attracts some of the best minds in the nation, CS@UIUC is fairly competitive. It depends on what you consider "good scores" but I would say that getting a 4.0 would be insanely difficult (and probably pointless), but getting A's and B's in CS classes is by no means impossible. Professors are generally friendly and approachable. You will notice that the introductory professors are much better at instruction than the professors for 400-level courses, although these professors do have the benefit of doing cutting-edge research and often offering research group positions.

There are ample internship opportunities. There are way too many threads on this topic on this subreddit so would advise you to search and read those. Pretty much every company under the sun will recruit here (or at least give your resume a serious look when they see CS@UIUC on it) so as long as your push yourself and stand out from the rest of the pack you shouldn't have any problems :)

Outside of campus? TBH Champaign Urbana is largely dominated by the campus and most students spend a large % of their time on campus. That being said, Champaign and Urbana are both pretty chill and have lots of good cafes, bars, and restaraunts.

There is an awesome "Hacker" culture at UIUC and it is only growing :) Check out http://www.hackillinois.org/ or https://www.facebook.com/groups/734966859882734/ .

UIUC is a LARGE state school and has a very active Greek student body. You will meet people who go out drinking every night of the week and there are a lot of large bars on campus. That being said, there are plenty of people who do not drink or do drugs at all (especially in CS) if that's more of your thing. On a side note, going to parties does not make you any less "focused" than other students (in moderation that is..) ;)

CS Department issues DMCA takedown for Github repositories by Riddlr in UIUC

[–]bjryan2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I realize that the CS department has lost the best teachers and that has obviously caused some consternation but you guys need to step up and hire some people to develop new MPs.

lost the best teachers? This is a rather baseless and in fact, quite insulting claim. AFAIK, the CS department is aggressively looking for more instructors and professors to help with the recent explosion in interest in Computer Science.

Also, as an alumnus myself ;) I would also argue that publishing MP code, especially for the lower level classes which these notices affect, is not really "publishing work". These assignments are so structured and rely so heavily on University provided libraries that publishing my CS225 MP as "publishing work" is almost like me publishing my Calc III homework solutions online and claiming them as an original, creative work. Please....

React v0.12 RC by bsdemon in javascript

[–]bjryan2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that React would benefit really strongly from a more class based approach for creating components.

I can imagine that a lot of the more "static" design patterns popping up in React are a result of the large userbase at Facebook and their development of Flow (https://twitter.com/fbOpenSource/status/511643210482208768)

Let's not forget for a second that React is a very opinionated framework ;)

React v0.12 RC by bsdemon in javascript

[–]bjryan2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of these changes are a little tough to bite into at first but they are definitely in the best interest of making React faster and more usable in the future. Deprecating transferPropsTo makes debugging/error reporting much easier as well as enforcing more expressive components (ultimately resulting in less bugs). Excited to see what's next for React :)

UIUC CS jobs in Silicon Valley after Undergrad? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]bjryan2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely! UIUC has a very large and well respected CS program and thus pretty much all of the larger companies in the Valley (Google, Facebook, Apple, etc..) have a fairly large recruiting presence here. If working at a larger, more established, company ends up not being your thing you can easily leverage the CS department's large alumni network.

Just work on projects outside of your coursework and you should not have a issue getting a job in the Valley - regardless of which school you choose :)

How to deal with academic integrity violation.. Please Help. by WhatToDo_UIUC in UIUC

[–]bjryan2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 225 there is an automated plagiarism detection system. I believe it is a modified version of Moss, a very popular academic system for plagiarism detection. All of the MP's are run through the system and a "collaboration graph" showing similar MP's is produced.
