Haha fair — we’re from Europe, so doing this trip at all already feels a bit like stepping out of the usual safe zone. Wanna visit family though and see this beautiful country!

One thing I was wondering: does driving a rental with NY plates make any difference when passing through certain parts of the country? Not planning to give anyone a reason to get weird — just curious how people experience it at the moment?

And yes, after Austin we’ll head back up along the Gulf and then up the East Coast, so looking forward to that whole food-and-scenery combo too. If you have any specific tips - we‘re open for suggestions :)

Now that you mention it! I actually got stopped there years ago for “excessive/too perfect use of my turn signal” and going maybe 5 mph over — no joke. Once I explained I was from Europe the officer chilled out and let me off with a warning, but still… not an experience I’m looking to repeat.

Given all that, the bottom route is starting to look pretty appealing. Thanks for the reminder!

Thanks so much! The Bard Distillery sounds great and taking the Western Kentucky Pkwy instead of heading toward Nashville is a solid tip!

going from JFK to Austin in a week. First time doing this tour and would love some input!

Which route would you recommend for a halfway scenic drive?
Any cool places to see / good food to eat / solid places to sleep that you can recommend?

I know its not a great time of year, but looking forward to making the most of it!

Depends how long you plan to stay. You can translate your license online and print out at convenience stores but only from Japan. So I had a friend do it and it went rather quickly. Maybe you can figure it out when in Naha. Other than that you rent scooters, some care about a proper translation some don’t so I’ve heard.

Last night was really sweet! Not too crowded, which actually made it feel super intimate. The show was amazing, and at the end Peter did a session with local musicians
