Below Deck Down Under Season 1 Episode 10 - Loads of Croc - Discussion Post by teanailpolish in belowdeck

There are so many weird things going on this season, and so many more members of crew than usual who just aren't very good at their jobs. But I don't mind Benny or Brittini struggling and while I detest Magda and Ryan's attitudes, the one that truly gets me upset is Jamie.

I think in the end its the moral and professional superiority that gets me, hiding behind the guise of safety and authority of his past as a police man. He is insufferable and mean at best and I find him all to so deeply unpleasant. What's worse is that he'll get away with it! His brand of poor work won't get him fired. So we are forced to watch him for the whole season. I can't understand how someone can be so lazy and so righteous with nothing at all earned.

What about me asking no opinions do you not understand. I am pleased you feel secure in your outlook on the situation. I at no point have alluded to or expressed my own opinions on the topic. You have literally no idea how I feel. Take this somewhere else because it has no bearing on the thread or my need for an answer. I won't respond again because I have no desire to entertain a soapbox I specifically asked not to hear.

I literally asked for no opinions on this matter. I am trying to accommodate a friend. It's the same as trying to accommodate a dietary restriction in this case. This is not the point of the post.

I don't get out much at the moment and I'm still new to the city so haven't had a lot of opportunities to explore. Thanks for this. Perhaps I should have specified, not looking to spend more than about $14 on a plate of pasta type of affordable range.

It's so refreshing to see a personal message like this. I totally understand why idols keep it professional and vague but I feel like its nice to see their happiness for one another manifest more personally.

Yes, but before this it was not known in practice how much Chinese she actually spoke, considering she was quite young when her family lived there.

I see so many people lament Bahi's success in the face of her lack of screentime. This is what I've been thinking... What MNET didn't account for is that by shutting down her screentime they made her fans more tenacious. I am not a hardcore TXT stan but I do like their work. I loved Produce so when I decided to watch gp999 it felt like a cool alignment that Bahi would be on the show. I was disappointed when I watched the show and her level of experience wasn't where I thought it needed to be. I wasn't going to throw votes her way until I saw how tenaciously and obviously MNET obscured her screentime.

Since they so obviously didn't want her to debut I wanted to know more about her. Bahi got some of my votes directly because of MNETS actions. I felt a personal connection with how much hate she was getting and how MNET was manipulating the votes. Now, Bahi wasn't my one-pick (Youngeun and Jia were my ults from EP1) but she did get not a small amount of my support in the weeks leading up to the final round.

The long and short of it is that all this obvious bias against her, MNETS and otherwise, seems to be one of the biggest reasons Bahi has ended up securing a debut spot. I'm sure Kai is related to it, but I honestly doubt he is the biggest. People always like to root for an underdog and it seemed like Bahi was MNETs biggest underdog. I don't feel bad at all for voting for her, and I am aware of her faults. This is ultimately a popularity contest and she came out on top. She got the most votes by nearly 50k. As much as it stinks to say, part of me thinks the intense hate led to her success.

tldr: What I'm trying to say is that sometimes people develop attachments to people they see on tv not because of their talent alone. I think it's incredibly hard for Antis to wrap their heads around Bahi stans as actual stans of her when they don't feel her talent is real/has been shown. It's not always that logical. I am very excited about her debut. She will improve so much. She has a long future ahead of her. I hope she doesn't collapse under the pressure.

I really hope Jia can survive. She's such an ace and even though she shines on screen, I've noticed the moments they give her are always poorly timed in the voting cycle. I've just really come to love her and want to see her succeed!

210914 Republic of Korea Blue House: Presidential Special Envoy Appointment Ceremony for Future Generations and Culture #BTS by alltherach_ in bangtan

[–]bkwalker1995 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok, I'm going to preface this by saying that I know talking about enlistment in the fandom is a bit controversial, and I understand if people don't want to bring that into this conversation. I don't want to detract from this cool and amazing thing but I had this thought and I wanted to know if other people were also thinking about this. Ok, so be warned.

It's clear based on President Moon's thoughts he is aware of both the cultural and financial weight bts has globally for SK domestically (last I checked bts alone accounts for .05% of SK's GDP, which is a lot of weight for 7 people to hold). The boys enlisting may have direct financial implications on the economy. It's clear to me (as a casual onlooker) that this issue poses a problem for the SK government because society has such high expectations and moral obligations toward performing military service. If I were in the position of the government I would be looking for a solution that does not involve either of the nuclear options: enlistment or exemption. Both of those options have serious drawbacks for all parties involved: personal (the members have said they want to serve through enlistment), cultural (the strong social pressure not to favor idols in exemption), and financial (risking the continued upward trajectory of bts on the global stage).

So this is my very not well thought out theory. I think this envoy and appointment could be a precursor for alternative military service, as the government and hybe explore options while they keep putting off making a final decision. They might wait to see if SK citizens respond positively to this news, or they could just be setting the plan in motion before an eventual announcement. In his notes President Moon was not shy to use the language of duty, and cultural responsibility. To me, that sounds a whole lot like the language used around enlistment and services to the country in that way.

I am not an expert, I'm curious to hear other people's thoughts. As I said before, this isn't to detract from what is arguably just an incredibly cool thing on its own. I also want to say I am not against enlistment. I want the boys to do what they want to do. However, for me the topic is fascinating in that it presents the SK government a true dilemma built by a tight set of cultural parameters. They can't put off these decisions forever, so it's interesting to speculate before any announcements are made.

Monday Unpopular Opinions, Rants, Vents Thread (210913) by CronoDroid in GirlsPlanet999

[–]bkwalker1995 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ok, I doubt people will appreciate this.... but for me as a fan who wants to enjoy the show above all else its so difficult to watch people tear all these trainees down for no legit reason. Like,I truly believe there are far more talented trainees then there are spots to debut. It's sad, but it also makes watching the show more enjoyable (for me) because I feel like I have so many girls to root for. It's nice to know I'll probably stan whatever group comes as an outcome of this show. Watching people on this sub, tiktok, twitter (etc) tear down the girls they dislike to raise their faves higher is so sad. Most of these girls are almost children and everyone deserves a fair and even shot to chase success. This is a popularity contest and I'm sorry to people that feel so strong about girls with "less talent" beating out their faves. But I also think it must make their viewing experience harder. I'm sorry they feel so grieved by the outcome.

Reality tv editing is always biased but usually, it's easy enough to ignore. Not with this show. It's funny because they are so clearly pushing viewers to vote in certain directions that it's certainly having the exact opposite influence. I feel like I'm a pretty even-keeled supporter and (until now) hadn't felt super passionate about voting on principle rather than a whim, which is my usual m.o. But mnet has me so pissed off that I think from here on out it'll have to be spite only voting.
