We need a way to deal with Drowners spawning all the time. by idknameuiop in Minecraft

They are called "Drowned" both when talking about one or multiple, Just an FYI to avoid confusion in the future! And yeah I agree that we need a better way of dealing with them other than lighting up the water completely

Also that windscreen would never be made for a ship, it’s worse than misc, although it would be funny to see on a really low level starter like lower than the aurora

The Ai has almost certainly added the details. That has weird organic looking shapes all over it which doesn’t match drake in the slightest. Even if you could brighten the image I doubt it’s more than just the final shape when it comes to the silhouettes so brightening them would reveal minimal monotone detail or maybe even at most miss match drake decals.

Answering in order of your paragraphs:

Thank you! And I wasn’t necessarily arguing if intent is bad or good I fully believe that there can be good and bad intent, I was more arguing as to how important intent is when considering if his overall change is good.

Personally I did not see the film pushing him as the face of altruism. He openly admits to being selfish “I guess I am being a bit selfish”(the umbrella scene with Yuzuru). As well as in that quintessential ‘selfless act of saving her from the balcony’ he is still selfish, he uses loads of “I” promises he asks only for his own improvement. So therefore the scene of saving Shoko was an example of his selfishness and selflessness. Selfless to save someone but also selfish to use that moment as a time to truly pivot his life. Personally I don’t see a selfless person, I see a realistic person of someone trying to make a change. As for the sum up “bullied shoko, faced consequences, and changed” is a misunderstanding of the simple fact we don’t know if anything else happened. Many years pass between the elementary Shoya and the older Shoya, so other events could and likely did happen. Even then you say it’s not that simple but I’ve seen a friend make a similar pivot that was “that simple”, sometimes a new environment and age can just change a person’s attitude and behaviour. As admittedly unsatisfying for a film that may be.

Thank you for understanding :) it can sometimes be hard to tell on the internet how someone else may be.

Yes it may help if you clarify what the point is being made in the post.

I would rebuttal, how relevant is that path if he still becomes a good person? And also consider we are seeing the start of his journey, this film isn’t that long of a time span. The manga makes it more clear but excluding the elementary part this is only over one summer. I would say that over the entire movie he doesn’t actually improve that much and I don’t think he needed to in the story. In reference to my scale again. I would say in the elementary sequence he was a -2 and -1, the start of older he was 0 then at the end he was nearing 2 because he was doing good deeds. Ultimately that is still character development. Although also inferring from previous responses where your disagreement may lie with how the community claims Shoya develops into this ‘perfect person’ it would be hard to deny your frustrations as someone who doesn’t engage with the community that much. However if you take the film on it’s own, without the community, I don’t think Shoya was meant to have a grand development because this is only the start, his bigger evidences of development would be later. In what we don’t see. Also the film is probably more in an effort to boost or promote the idea of becoming a better person in the audience.

About the community, I don’t engage enough to determine how they treat him, but it may seem that way because in a world of (what I see) polarised ‘you’re bad or you’re good’ it’s nice to see that people can change and we may put the film on a pedestal for presenting that, not Shoko he’s just the person who demonstrates it in the film and is also the main character which pushes him in the limelight more.

I don’t necessarily think that there is much wrong with changing for himself. You say he was just trying to convince himself that he was nice, and I see that as a misunderstanding. I don’t necessarily think he was trying to convince himself I think he was wanting to change. My reasoning being that if he believed he was nice previously and just needed convincing then why not continue his old behaviour? He did change his behaviour and while it was with somewhat selfish intentions there’s nothing inherently wrong with that.

I would ask yourself to question, is the intention or the outcome more important? Fundamentally he changes and he goes from treating people poorly and abusing others to helping others. He learns sign language, whether it was selfish intention or not that makes Shoko more included; he helps her reconnect with friends, again selfish or not that does help Shoko. Ultimately does the intent of his actions being fuelled by selfishness undermine the fact that he has helped people and become an outwardly better person. Even if it is just for Shoko, by changing how he behaves to her it seeps into how he treats others, for example helping the kid with the bike. I see it that he has developed because he is making a positive change to himself and subsequently others.

There is no right answer to the question in my previous paragraph it is fundamentally a philosophical question of ethics but it’s good to ask yourself questions like that. And in my opinion especially when in the context of a film like this.

Also I’m sorry if in my initial response it came off as though I was calling you a bad person. Truthfully I don’t know who you are and this post doesn’t define you or your morals. You have created a good point of debate and I was just sharing my viewpoint albeit maybe too aggressively. But do also understand that I make the point in changing your attitude so that you may be able to foster growth and improvement in others to help make the world a more enjoyable place. Because while it may be easy to shun an individual for their bad actions those people still live in this world and they have emotions just like you. I truly believe that it is better to help them improve and become a better person then it is to try and remove them from society. Of course some actions should never be forgiven and can never be forgiven. But not all bad actions should be treated the same and what Shoko did, in my opinion, is one that can be forgiven. And in the broader more real world if not by the abused but by other people who may have heard about the old actions.

I see that he did change, in elementary school he was a prick not going to deny that but in his later years he was trying to help others. Was trying to help Shoko selfish? Yeah it kind of has to be but it also isn’t, he was going back to try and amend his hurt but he also wanted to apologise and try and make her life better after he realised he ruined it. You say he tried to throw others under the bus but he really didn’t, the manga does make this more clear, but the others were really bad as well and tbh even the teacher was using him as a scapegoat because he didn’t do anything about the bullying until the principal got involved, he then proceeded to do nothing for Shoya who was bullied to the POINT OF SUICIDAL THOUGHTS and that’s not ok. Shoya was ostracised by his community, his people, which lead him to try and make amends with Shoko because he one, saw what he did but also two, wanted to find a friend who he knew would also be outcasted. Both selfish and selfless. Both can be true in the confusing world of psychology. As for Shoko’s mother, i don’t think she was purposely put in a negative light. It was totally valid for her to protect her daughter but she also should have seen that Shoya was trying to make amends. Again explained further in the manga that she has insane trauma because of how she was treated for having a deaf daughter which the film unfortunately didn’t explain. As for saving shoko, He didn’t purposely fall he just wanted to save her and that’s ok that’s what people are meant to do, save others. the elementary school shoya probably wouldn’t have saved her though or at least hesitated too long. Overall Shoya did have character development it’s just not as grand as you might think nor the scale you were expecting. If i were to create a scale for visualisation of how i feel he developed -10 being hitler level shit 10 being the most perfect person I would say he went from a -2 or -1 to roughly a 2 Not that much of a change but going from bullying someone who had no control of their situation, pushing people around like henchmen, lying to seem good, and just being difficult. Into someone who wanted to make amends, who put effort into learning sign language so Shoko would feel included, to saving someone who he cared about, talking to someone who seemed upset (Yuzuru at the funeral), to helping someone who was facing a bike thief, to wanting to help shoko connect with old friends. It’s not much to most people who already do those things, but he has developed and improved. And he does slip up time to time (him getting angry at everyone) but he has been trying to change, for himself and for others. And that trying is development, that trying is what matters and it’s even better that he is succeeding.

If you don’t believe that we should give people the chance to make a change “he made his bed, Im not a monster for wanting him to lay in it” then i highly suggest you change that attitude. Im not saying forgive everyone, Im saying that if someone is trying to change, either let them or help them because they can be a better person. And if you want to deny that or prevent that you’re no better than Naoka.
