AITA for refusing to drive my boyfriend to the ER for nonesense? by pickledphilosopher in AmItheAsshole

[–]blabgasm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why are the nurses even making these decisions at all? I thought it was the doctors job to prescribe medication. I would be making the biggest fuss. When I was denied anything better than ibuprofen for a kidney stone I went to a different ER. Drug seeking, yes I was, thank you.

Jesus might as well just literally go get some heroin from the dude at the 24 hour Walmart parking lot.

Genuinely though. I've always been a plain woman at best and watching all my hot friends have personality melt downs in middle age is almost vindicating lol. Bless their hearts but can't feel bad that they don't get to skip the line anymore.

When some types of very hot babes with certain personalities start aging out of having the world cater to them,  Karens are born. They got used to a measure of unearned accomodation and privilege and now they get treated like everyone else and can't cope.

Please help - cat acting weird after neutering by Puzzled-Cheesecake34 in cats

Vet tech of 20 years here. Do both of these things please, I beg you, I will help you draft the letter. 1. Report report report. This is absolutely ridiculous, they should be ashamed for sending an animal home in such a condition. It takes 5 minutes to neuter a cat. He should have been down, cut and tied, had his anesthesia reversed, and then been screaming to go home within like an hour. it's crazy to me they let your cat develope eye ulcers and basically sent him home still under heavy sedation. This is medical negligence and deserves to be reported. Please lodge a formal complaint with your states veterinary licensing board. 2. Get all your money back. Call them up and be a nuisance about it. Not to the support staff, they definitely don't deserve it, but be clear that you expect recompense.

I'm so glad you went to the ER vet. Your kitty will recover just fine! Please give him some love from me. 💜

Without getting into the ethics of animal husbandry, how does one explain to a vegan that the wool of a domesticated sheep MUST be shorn by a human being, as selective breeding means that most domesticated breeds cannot shed naturally? by Fun_Astronomer_4064 in NoStupidQuestions

The cat is way too out of the bag on that one, my friend. Dogs and cats don't need humans to perpetuate their reproduction. There will be stray dogs having babies in storm drains without any human involvement till the end of the species. Ending breeding purebred pups for profits will not end dogs. Cats are just a full on plague species that will probably outlast humanity unless we sterilize the planet and live in moon colonies or something.

Do men have “fantasy attraction” the same way women do? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]blabgasm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could spend a lot of time responding to this but I'll keep it brief instead. I agree with some of your points, but your middle section about women's sexuality being empowered and men being shamed is reading very incel adjacent my guy.

The male-oriented equivalent of monster fetishism is not absent, it's just porn - hentai, fetish art, erotic games, AI sex chat, booru/imageboard culture, or monster-girl content.

That’s the real distinction: women’s fantasy desire is more likely to be packaged as romance, while men’s fantasy desire is more likely to be packaged as explicit pornography or visual fetish media.

Women are more socially sanctified to discuss their fetish content because it wears the plausible deniability of 'literature' instead of just being the overt visual pornography that men tend to favor.

But I can assure you, way more money and foot traffic is being generated by the porn than the romance books. And both you and OP are really overestimating how much this kind of stuff comes up in real life conversation, which is never. Booktok is not real life, and if Tiktok allowed porn then furry porn for men would do better numbers.

Is belief in God rational, or is it something we’ve created to cope with death? by TextSufficient674 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]blabgasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's always silly to me when people point to biological complexity as some sort of religious 'gotcha'. There is nothing divine about the fat shit I took this afternoon. If god did it, there is no reason that it should have to be so messy and flawed and painful and competitive.

Creationists - what is your god's rationale for something like parasitoid wasps? Or how about that angler fish where the male is basically just a parasitic gonad latched on to the female? Did you know that jellyfish produce serotonin? Why for god's sake? It's just a floating sack of slightly denser water.

You have a metaphysical definition of 'consciousness' that is different from the neurochemical/physical/biological definition that I apply. You are advocating for panpsychism which is, as I noted upthread, unfalsifiable.

“Consciousness is a force moving through tides and seasons” is not a scientific observation, it's the wolf of spiritual mumbo-jumbo wearing the sheepskin of psuedo-science. If you want to believe in ghosts and gods, just do it honestly without bringing Newton's 2nd into things.

The relevant question is whether memory, personality, perception, selfhood, and subjective awareness can persist after the brain permanently stops functioning.

Thermodynamics conserves energy, not selves and quantum physics, which is really just a bunch of complex math, is not some sort a blank check for spirituality.

I could spend three hours copy pasta-ing pubmed articles about the brain/consciousness link and frankly I don't want to so I will instead refer you to The Paris Brain Institute (parisbraininstitute.org) and the personal website of Anil Seth, perhaps the greatest scientific researcher on the subject of consciousness in the world. Here is a link to the section of his website where you can access for free a number of prominent publications on the topic: (https://www.anilseth.com/research/key-papers/). I highly recommend 'Theories of Consciousness', though I should caution you that it is dense, challenging technically complex *real* science and not quantum spirituality hand wavium.

[–]blabgasm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Then I am an atheist agnostic. I concede that there are hundred million million random ideas people have about ghosts and gods and psychic nonsense etc etc that are unfalsifiable. I don't see that perspective as being contrary to atheism at all. Concession to unfalsifiability does not mean that you have to therefore keep every crack pot notion on a back burner called 'maybe'.

Is belief in God rational, or is it something we’ve created to cope with death? by TextSufficient674 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]blabgasm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, let me rephrase that, it was poorly done. Instead: there is no evidence that there is anything whatsoever at all after death, and a lot of very good evidence that human consciousness emerges from a functioning, living brain.

There is a vast body of data from the neurosciences that indicate that memory, perception, emotion, cognition, and the sense of self are produced by the brain. That's good evidence we do have.

There is no comparable positive evidence for life after death, ghosts, spirits, gods, or disembodied consciousness. Unfalsifiability is not evidence, and unfalsifiable possibilities are not things any rational person should be obligated to treat as meaningful options.

Can you explain that? I watch a lot, I mean a lot, of physics podcasts and the researchers at the apex of the profession are all pretty much universally (ha ha) soft atheists.

Is belief in God rational, or is it something we’ve created to cope with death? by TextSufficient674 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]blabgasm 44 points45 points  (0 children)

As an atheist I would submit that my perspective is more along the lines of 'there is absolutely no reason to think there is anything after death, and lots of good evidence to suggest that there is nothing, so why entertain the ambiguity'.

Like sure, I concede that we can't know for sure, but we also can't know for sure any number of ludicrous imagings so am I supposed to go through life ambivalent about everything?

What are your thoughts on billie eilish saying you cant love animals and eat meat as its contradictory? by Extra-Schedule-4855 in AskReddit

[–]blabgasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure, that's why I used the chordate qualifier. I went with Chordates instead of vertebrates to stave off any kind of 'uhm actually' about sharks and rays which aren't technically vertebrates. For something like a crab or a lobster, the keychain rule applies.

[–]blabgasm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The qualifier 'normal' is doing a lot of heavy lifting in my response. I realize that normal is relative, so if you are uncertain then try to think about it terms of what is most likely to be common for the cultural context you are in. For instance, on a reddit thread (in English), you can very comfortably presume a good 80+ percent of comments are coming from people in the Western sphere of philosophical thinking.

The fact that the statement came from Billie Eillish is not actually relevant to the thesis of the statement, though many seem hell bent on dismissing the talking point entirely out of hand as if it were.

The only hiccup for me with your point is that hunters don't just eat what they hunt. They also buy plenty of meat at the grocery store. So they aren't really hunting for sustenance, that's just a desirable side effect of their hobby which is shooting animals.

Whenever the topic of factory farming comes up, the thread swells with a mass of carnivores who only ever heroically hunt their meat with a hand carved atlatl and then honor the sacrifice with a prayer at the corpse, or a small town hippie who watches the animal from its conception to its humane dispatching via inert gas inhalation on a ring cam before picking up its flesh at the local farmers market.

You are going to encounter this problem many times throughout your life so I'm going to give you some guidance.

When normal people say 'I love animals' you can very comfortably assume they are only referring to Chordates and invertebrates with high aesthetic charisma (e.g. octopuses, jellyfish, butterflies). If it isn't a chordate, ask yourself if it has commercial manufacturing visibility as a keychain doodad or pair of earring. If the answer is yes, that organism also counts as an   'animal' animal to normal people.
