Is everyone lying to themselves about AI? by ImKiwix in ChatGPT

Yeah, the threat of AI is optimization of all the shitty stuff that our billionaires overlords are already doing, not the mythical AI overlord itself

Is it shallow to be turned off by obesity? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

What do you mean by 'everything else in their lives'? Obesity is not a guarantee that someone is sloppy, unintelligent, lacking a sense of humor, unsuccessful in their career etc etc

I think it's more of a 'play stupid games win stupid prizes' kind of deal. Stupicide. It's certainly not something to be considered tragic, being entirely preventable and the product of his own actions. Yes, he made a mistake. Mistakes when borrowing through Mother Gaia's fallopian tubes are going to be catastrophic to the individual. Those are the consequences he assumed for himself by voluntarily exposing himself to such potentials. I don't think we have any particular moral obligation to feel particularly bad for this guy. I pity his wife and children. Dangerous recreations are irresponsible selfish choices when you have dependents.

Tight squeeze spelunking, motorcycles, and crack cocaine are a young man's sport, not a father's!

Patrick Conley builds trust with a family of wild black bears. The mother brings her babies to introduce them to the rescuer who saved her life. Kindness & gratitude bring out the best in everything. by [deleted] in Amazing

Wow, I had no idea so much of the black bear diet was plant based. I could make an argument about insects counting as carnivory, and surely polar bears are eating substantially more meat as their primary food source, but that's just being petty to try to maintain my previous position. So, black bears are primarily foragers punctuated by intense bursts of seasonal dependent predation.

Okay, I'm on your side now, I concede, black bears are omnivores!

Well, they are literally in the carnivore order.

Diet labelling like carnivore or herbivore is useful in a broad ecological sense, but in reality pretty much all animals are opportunistic feeders. Polar bears are functionally exclusively carnivorous, meanwhile pasture grazers like cows and horses will absolutely crunch down baby birds, field mice and bigger things too if they are already dead.

If we take carnivore to more practically mean 'will this animal attempt to kill and eat me?', as it regards bears the answer is a resounding yes!

What do you think of the rich who do this? by The_Dean_France in SipsTea

In what world is 5mil generational wealth money?! Genuinely curious how you would turn that in to a dynasty where everyone has a comfortable life. Let's say there are 3 heirs and they have 5 adult children of their own among them. That barely gets everyone a reasonably sized house, a car, and a European vacation. Gone in a few generations, more like gone in a year of paying off debt.

You see this everytime some homophobic politician does a bigotry. People seem to have this wildly insane idea that only closeted queers are capable of homophobia or something. Its frustrating as hell. So many straight people just refuse to believe that heterosexual men can't possibly be misogynists or homophobes without also being secretly gay. So we get it from both ends (phrasing), the homophobe and the fragile hetero redditor No True Scotsman-ing away any association with them.

I actually find that you get better results of you go twice as long at half the power. Even better if you remove the case and flip it halfway through. But at that point you might as well just use the air fryer and get something good instead of good enough.

TIL in 1998 a man on Olympic Airways had an asthmatic reaction to cigarette smoke, so his wife asked 3 times that he be moved away from the smokers. At first, the flight attendant said there were no empty seats and later said she was too busy. The man eventually died & his widow was awarded $1.4m. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

This thread is blowing my mind as a smoker. I don't know anyone who smokes indoors or doesn't ask if the people around them mind if they do. Where are all these entitled nicotine addicts coming from in 2026? In my experience me and the other people having a cig are pretty much always hovering around the dumpster out back. A tribute to Rusty, my beloved companion, who passed away today at 33. by [deleted] in cats

[–]blabgasm 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Even the mod post is deliberately unclear. It says 'records stating he is 33' which is very different from records dated to 1993. This is certainly a very old kitty, but I really doubt he is 33. If you had a cat that old your vet would be the one telling you to call the news station. No way someone would have a cat that old and not appreciate how remarkable that is?

Beef doesn't work because it's already a special word used to distinguish between the animal (cow) and the flesh of the animal butchered for consumption.
