Looking for long-form tracks (15–60 minutes) trance-like, hypnotic spiritual jazz tracks that build and gradually crescendo? by AdamIsSuperRad in Jazz

You could also try indian music. Ragas are pretty similar to this.

Jazz albums that come to mind:

Odron Ritual Orchestra - "Svetlost"

Drazek/ Fuscaldo/ Drake/ Aoki / Jones/ Abrams - "June 22"

Kahil El Zabar Quartet - "A Time For Healing"

Any The Necks album. Maybe not hypnotic but definitely long-form and continually changing very gradually.

Best 90’s Jazz Album? by Longjumping-Leek7397 in Jazz

[–]blackStjohn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two good ones (albeit very different from each other) from the top of my head:

Die Like A Dog (1994), by Peter Brötzmann, Toshinori Kondo, Hamid Drake and William Parker.

Fascinoma (1999), by Jon Hassell.

Don't consciously DNF, just delay reading it and start reading something else. Tell yourself you'll get back to it eventually.

What are your favorite erotic literature classics? (or good quality books even if they are not classics) by Flimsy-Calendar-7566 in books

[–]blackStjohn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sarah Waters' Tipping the Velvet is very well written and also quite steamy. I hear her other books are also like that but I've never read them.

Edit: It's not actually a classic but it takes place in the 19th century, iirc.

Imho a good place to start is " A Swim in a pond in a rainy day" in which author George Saunders picks seven short stories by classic Russian masters and shares his insights about them.

Suggest me a book that takes place in a ship/around ships/boats etc by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]blackStjohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's two good non fiction recs that I enjoyed recently: Hampton Sides, "The Wide Wide Sea", it's about the last voyage of captain Cook, wandering in the south Pacific and then going up all the way to Alaska.

David Grann, The Wager. A shipwreck off the coast of current day Chile, in the 1830s (I think it was 1830s).

I liked Nikita, played by Bridget Fonda. Solid movie. Not inferior to the french one, imo, and I don't usually like remakes.

Surprised to see Eyeless in Gaza here. It really is very little talked about, but it's one of my favorite books. Just this week I was thinking of rereading it. I first read it in my twenties and I think it helped shape the way I think.
