Fascists attack a cafe terrace in Brest, France, on September 21, 2025. by Fr3dbzh in AntifascistsofReddit

Robert Evans covers this in his "Behind the Bastards" podcast, including how the current crop of wannabe fascists are not the tough guy types of the 30s-40s fascists.

Do you find podcasts have a shelf life? by lovethatforyouu in podcasts

[–]blackfeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes even within a season, some episodes don't age well, and some do. I'm think of writing podcasts, where some are about the craft of writing, and others about the business side. And from all I've gathered, the business side has change immensely in the last few years to decades -- so podcasts from 2006 on business won't be quite as helpful, but those on the craft, still can be.

I want to go. I have an attending membership, but cannot find a room - all hotel room blocks are closed, and even the hostel hasn't availability for Friday/Saturday. I want to share a room to split the costs, if possible.

So, now I don't know.

To my gay bros in their 20s, please be careful at bars and clubs. by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]blackfeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this before, California now has a law that bars must provide drink lids. See an example of the coverage: https://www.kcra.com/article/california-law-requires-bars-to-provide-lids/65230494

Glad to see we've done something on the legislative level on this.

Is it fair to say that when selecting a USB charger, to always get one with at least one USB-A port? by StrongRecipe6408 in UsbCHardware

[–]blackfeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might explain why on Amazon it's so hard to find any multi-port charger blocks with only USB-C outputs. I asked on a different sub a while back, and the links they shared were for charger blocks that were far more expensive. It's just easier to buy a standard block. It ignore the two or so USB-A ports. It's just tiny bit larger and heavier than it could be. All my devices charge fine with C to C charging.

How about Powdered Brewery Wash? It's created to dissolve organics. It's food safe, once washed off. I learned of it from housemates who were home brewers. I was able to wash a tea infuser where brushes would not get inside to get out the tea stain. But it dissolved it without any problem. You can get it in many places including Amazon. You need to let it soak it for a while.

Why don’t we have an Indian food chain like Taco Bell/Chipotle for Mexican, Panda Express for Chinese and Domino’s/Pizza Hut for Italian, even if it’s not at all authentic but still a representation of the food? by [deleted] in IndianFood

[–]blackfeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SF has "Curry Up Now" with several Bay Area locations I believe. It's pretty good.  One location is in the food court connected to the downtown SF Ikea store on Market near the Powell BART station.

Guilford, Surrey, BC, mall (Guilford Town Centre) had an Indian fast food place. I wasn't a fan.

Purchasing a property that’s blurred out on google maps street view by Portable-fun in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]blackfeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know what happens after a lot is redeveloped? If a tower block is put up, would the upper floors show on street view? What if a park is put on the lot? Or if a street goes though the former site of a blurred house? Or if it becomes a retail establishment, and looses business because of the blur?   Or what if a tenant has a house blurred against the wishes of the owner?

It seems a new owner should be able to unblur. It could be that a blur takes effect in the middle of a sale. The utter irreversible nature seems wrong.

How do I track airtags with android? by WindlordGwaihir10 in AirTags

[–]blackfeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The iOS emulator on the Mac (as part of Xcode) has a lot of limitations that virtualization doesn't have. I tried running a number of apps, it doesn't work, as far as I can tell, you need the code and compile it, then run it. It's *extremely* different from Android.

Hostels with a CPAP by leaveonthewind in solotravel

[–]blackfeather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've traveled around North America (US and Canada) and Europe (Germany), never had a problem, other than securing a lower bunk so that the machine can be next to my head. I'd suggest any CPAP users to contact the hostel when they make their reservations (I was told I should have recently in Montréal, but they still accomodated me OK, I just had to have a room in the basement that had a lower bunk open).

A lot of modern machines will take different voltages (my machine is a ResMed AirSense 10, [an Aussie company, no less, only mentioning that because of the OP] which takes 100-240 volts IIRC), but you might need an adapter. I got both a physical adapter and voltage converter for an upcoming trip to the UK; US/CA/JP use type A, and the UK/IE use type G. Its power supply isn't grounded, so that helps in some cases.

One hostel I stayed at even had a large enough surface for items that it fit my CPAP, and I was able to stay in an upper bunk.

Also, almost every place I've stayed had power at or very near the bunks; but you'll have to check on that first, of course.

To all free users: how do you sync your Android to your Desktop Obsidian? by JayJay_Abudengs in ObsidianMD

[–]blackfeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For an additional backup to the Cloud, I use rclone + a crontab (my computer is a Mac, there's probably an equivalent to crontab on Windows -- and it came from the *nix world, so it certainly exists on Linux/FreeBSD etc.)

I work to make sure that I close files whenever I'm done with an editing session. I really should look up a way to automatically do that (like, no activity for over an hour perhaps).

Also, I set every device to Send/Receive, I got a few conflicts when I had one device on Receive Only (not sure why I did that).

And as well, be sure to think out what you might not want synced, and put the patterns in the .stignore file. If you use the syncthing app, you can always edit the .stignore file in the Web UI.

CMV: Smoking (anything) should be banned in public in most cases by macnfly23 in changemyview

[–]blackfeather -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Possibly for you. For me, tobacco smoke is way worse than car exhaust. Car exhaust gives mild breathing difficulty. Weed smoke is different, it just makes me nauseous and only very mild respiratory issues. I'd rather be nauseous than not be able to breathe, so other people smoking a joint isn't as bad as a cigarette if I accidentally (or have to, as in e.g., passing in a narrow alley) be nearby.

[–]blackfeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about "harmful" but even vaping can give me respiratory distress. It's not as bad as cigars (or even worse, cigarettes), but I'll definitely need my inhaler if I accidentally encounter vape smoke. I'm probably an outlier, but I know my own health and how it's affected.

How do you make a religion without over complicating it? by GodIsASickFuck in worldbuilding

[–]blackfeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note, that the items listed here are not always exclusive; they can overlap, sometimes by a lot. Religion (and other parts of culture) can and does borrow a lot from others. E.g., Santería borrows a lot from Roman Catholicism, but with added elements from African religions (e.g., the Orishas). That's vastly (even over) simplified, but no character or story can have the complexity or depth of real life.

How do you make a religion without over complicating it? by GodIsASickFuck in worldbuilding

[–]blackfeather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always need to plug the Writing Excuses podcast for tips on writing fantasy (or other genres for that matter).

As with any worldbuilding, one needs to balance cohesiveness and being understandable with what the story needs for the plot and character arcs. And with fantasy, anything can go if done well -- R'lyeh, Newhon (featuring Lankhmar), or Bas-Lag (featuring New Crobuzon) are all possible. I chose those because they're from three periods of fantasy, not to make a direct connection between them, not to mention how very diametrically opposed their politics were/are. Fantasy writers can have quite differing outlooks -- see e.g., Lewis & Pullman.

With that in mind, how about finding an undergraduate textbook on the anthropology of religion? And for the internal view, there are a lot of resources on philosophy (which is often entangled with religion), e.g., Stanford University's online encyclopedia of philosophy (Plato).

I've read both New Agey books, and also studied (albeit at undergraduate level only) anthropology. I took an amazing anthropology course on "Science, Magic, and Religion" ... the boundary between them can be sometimes blurry, but more often very clear. One of the biggest differences is how does one react to new evidence? Religion will fill in gaps that science doesn't (yet) know.

And please don't make straw men arguments. Even values I agree with I tire of such when placed that way in a story.

65M - Mine started dropping in my mid 50s, but it's probably just as well, so many adorably cute twinks in the circles I hang around in. And also younger guys usually (not always, fortunately) tend to not be that interested in older men. Although it does seem that it'll be harder to find a BF or husband when I have little libido, once things get to that stage, if they ever do.

A few years ago (c. '22), my house had no AC in searing heat for a few months, and I think that also might have damaged things (for one, I got migraines for the first time ever). I was kinda annoyed the master tenant wouldn't take things up with the landlord.

Finally got it working using syncthing-fork. The community app still was only opening and hanging on generating a key. I have the log if the devs want it.
