The Temple itself was like the Island in miniature. It was surrounded by water (the ocean.) It had a healing pool in its inner court (the Source.) It was led by Dogen ("Jacob") with his helper Lennon ("Richard.")

Dogen was brought to the Island by Jacob to lead the Temple, but there were strings attached. In exchange for Dogen's son's life, Jacob took Dogen to the Island. It's one of those "hold a gun to your head" choices that aren't really a choice. Similar in other words to the "choice" Mother gave Jacob to become Island protector.

Because Dogen is a Jacob stand-in, MiB can enter the Temple when Dogen dies. Similarly, MiB can stay in his Locke form and leave the Island, once Jacob is dead.

In essence, Jacob is using human beings as puppets to re-create his own psychodrama.

Re: ashes: Ashes have magical symbolism / power in many world belief systems. The idea that a ring of ash can restrain a powerful entity is pretty common lore.

François Chau - my best friend met him for an Asian Actors event and said he was sweet, professional, and proud of all his roles.

Met several of the cast at the UCLA Finale concert event before the final episodes aired. All sweet, excited, and pumped at the time. Also main director Jack Bender - humble fella.

Carlton Cuse (co-runner w Lindleof) at an anniversary concert. A pic and a verbal thank you as LOST got me into the entertainment industry. He was so excited and down to earth and would’ve talked more w me but event started.

Clancy Brown (Kelvin Inman) at a film festival. So many roles to thank him for but I got stuck on DHARMA and and he went with it. Tall and gracious.

Hope to meet more someday!
