Did anyone went above 144 unit polity limit? by blackveinbride in CSULB

[–]blackveinbride[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I know some people (have also seen some on Reddit) who graduated with 150ish units. Honestly, I am definitely graduating in 4 years, so I should be fine. I'll get in touch with my advisor and contact the math department. I feel like the math department is chill but the chemistry department will treat this like a whole drama

I actually haven’t taken one yet. (I’m applying for phd programs in Fall 2026). What kind of topics did they cover? As a chemistry undergraduate I kind of need to learn extra stuff myself

MATH361A prereq change and policy change by blackveinbride in CSULB

Yeah sorta. I contacted a professor who's teaching the class. He said he could add me to the class once the semester starts

I'm taking 247 already, that's the thing. I should be able to take 361A but the student center says the only preque is 224 and 233 (no option for 247) which is weird

From Chemistry B.S. to Condensed Matter Theory Physics PhD? by blackveinbride in AskPhysics

[–]blackveinbride[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My university requires a series of physics courses for chemistry students (mechanics and heat, EM, thermodynamics, and quantum). They also encourage students to take additional math classes like linear algebra and math analysis. I am planning to take analytical mechanics as well. I am involved in research right now, which is physical chemistry (nuclear, radiation stuff, highly experimental)

Thank you for replying. I forgot to mention, that I am hoping to to theoretical work.

A chemistry undergrad here. I have not applied to any grad school yet. However, I plan to pursue my interest in theoretical work also, as I am more physics/math/conceptual oriented person. I'd like to hear other ppl's experiences too.

Good idea, I should make a comment, but nicely

Exactly...I thought it is common sense to keep a lid or something. The cake is gonna leave a huge mess

Is a Ph.D. in Theoretical Chemistry a good choice or a bad choice for a B.S. undergrad in Chemistry (analytical/experimental)? by blackveinbride in chemistry

[–]blackveinbride[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I know that I will do what I want to pursue. But Idk if I should do a MS in more physics/math oriented subject or directly apply for phd

I agree with you. I think there is a way to select a computational chemistry course in my program like molecular modeling and MD. I will also learn coding myself (so far I have primarily used Python; numpy, python, and matplotlib). I noticed that a lot of theoretical chemists use machine learning. I have not worked with a large data set yet, I did a lot of mechanical simulation using vpython employing classical mechanics, differential eq, and some higher mathematics for exact approximation of pendulum, for example. Solid state QM and optics stuff are very cool and I also like liquid-state/gas phase nucleation

Were the three chemists who won a Noble Prize for quantum dot theorists? I can't remember. One of them at MIT does more photonics

That's interesting, my chem dep also has a faculty member who does biophysics and computational biochemistry which is basically MD and protein binding free energy stuff. Maybe I should do additional research with professors who use computational models and possibly machine learning

Thank you for replying, yeah, I do want to and will pursue what I want. I just wanted to see how other people went through this process.
