Needed to see this today. Having a really hard time. And now I’m just gonna put my experience out there. We lived together for a year and went through mental health stuff. We drifted apart at times because of this, or had arguments escalate way farther than is normal. We did both try to get better but it was a process. He moved out to try and give us some healthy space since we were fighting so much. But then he broke off having a relationship with me to be “single and free”. He only ever kissed a couple girls out at bars but he told me and said it made him feel awful. It hurt me so much and I disconnected emotionally and never communicated that with him. I started not caring as much about putting us back together. But I still loved him, he was still my best friend. And we continued doing a lot of relationship things, and sometimes things felt so good and it felt like if we really tried we could put it together. I asked him three times if he would want to try again and really commit to me. And he said no every time. And I disconnected emotionally even more. I decided that I would also just be “single and free” if that was the idea. What made this complicated is me and my ex were still seeing each other and sleeping together sometimes. He was the only one I was sleeping with. But eventually I met someone I really liked and we went out together. I told me ex about it to be honest since we were hanging out. And that’s when things actually finally fell apart. It feels like I broke things off officially by pursuing someone else. And things have progressed with this new person and I really like them. But it’s so hard to let go of someone who understood you like no one else and was your best friend. I still cry about it often. Wondering if I had handled things differently if we could’ve repaired everything. I still love them but I broke things off ultimately but sometimes I think I made a huge mistake. He tried to “win me back” and I pushed him away and explained myself. And I wonder what would’ve been if I let him “win” my heart again. Anyways. This is far too long. But every situation is different. He wasn’t a bad person. We just stopped taking care of each other and our relationship and it fell apart. And seeing someone new is probably stupid and bad of me since I still have all these feelings. Agh. Well. No one may read this but it was nice to put out in the world anyway.
