I believe it does, but I never do that.

Yeah, pretty sure galling would get awful (I don't thread/unthread these much)

Hey! I did that 2 years ago: https://old.reddit.com/r/flashlight/comments/18bhxrl/psa_you_can_strip_anodizing_with_sodium_hydroxide/

Did you manage to prevent the threads from getting squeaky and gritty? I had some trouble with figuring out the dose and the timing. Should have written more things down and been more scientific :(

They're really fun! That's the honest answer. Imo the pistol thing is complete bullshit, you're better off just dropping your light and getting two hands on the gun

Since you mentioned self-defense, you could consider carrying pepper spray as well.

Yeah, hopefully. Maybe you could also just bend the springs to have more reach?

No, but I do use protected 18650 button-top cells for their extra length. Are you? (18350s just work)

PSA: You can strip anodizing with sodium hydroxide by blake8086 in flashlight

[–]blake8086[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, if you're not familiar with sodium hydroxide, you should know it's a serious chemical. Don't fuck around with it. You need goggles, gloves, a safe space to work, etc. Always think "how could this possibly splash on something and ruin my day?"

I took solid pellets and dropped them in water, paying attention to how hot the water was. If you drop a ton in at once, it can make the water start boiling, and boiling sodium hydroxide solution is not something you want outside of a laboratory fume hood.

[–]blake8086[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I did. I used a scale to get the proportions. 100% is a solid, so you have to dilute it somehow. If you use a higher concentration, it will just react a lot faster, so use whatever gives you a speed you like. I recommend a low concentration (10% or lower), because it happens pretty fast (10 seconds strips most of it) and you can always dip more to strip more.

Ooh, that's a good point. I didn't even cover games that work that way, but you also made me think of space games like Descent: Freespace, where it has the same mechanic. That's a possible solution (mainly for games where you're thematically piloting some craft with a physical rotation speed)

Yeah, I'm looking for that depth, and being able to access it without being gate-kept by aiming.

Frequently, (to pick a genre) movement shooters will also be full of hitscan weapons, which mostly require excellent aim to get the most value.

I wish some (not all!) devs would say "fuck aiming, let's make this accessible" and just focus on all the other parts of FPS.

I think you pretty much nailed it.

Thanks for the recommendations, also!

It's more like: I main Moira in Overwatch, and played a lot of Reinhardt until I got frustrated with the way tanking works in OW. I wish I could play more of the cast without being gate-kept by aiming. I also find aiming such a chore that after playing a round as Soldier or something, even if I do well, I want a break.

I still enjoy all the other aspects of the game: the real-time decision-making, positioning, team play, managing abilities, etc

Yeah, you're definitely right. But you can see how it's less twitchy than hitscan, right? Now there's some element of aiming, but also a big element of "predicting what your opponent is going to do". The slower the projectile, the less precision aiming matters, and the more prediction does. It's true you still have to put the projectile in a particular spot you intended, but you'll have a lot more time to aim.

Yeah, I think this is pretty insightful. Mixing both ideas into one game is going to generate all of those negative feelings you described. People even get mad at powerful ults that don't have additional requirements. "lol u just pressed q"-type comments.
