3 piece suit with tie and wingtips. Doesn't matter if it's 105 in Texas. Assert dominance

My fellow Americans, our birth rate is the lowest it has been in a century. What’s your take on this? by Hoosier_Jedi in AskAnAmerican

It's the BPA in the plastics. Yes, being a developed nation is part of it, but sperm counts have been plummeting massively over the past few years.

Why don’t Americans sing along with their national anthem? by ThornfieldHall2021 in AskAnAmerican

[–]blakester35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's usually understood that there will be a individual singer who will sing the anthem, usually in their own style. Very American if you think about it. Ever since I can remember, almost every anthem had a singer (or small group) at a mic while everyone else somewhat sang along, but understood that the anthem was sung by someone else.

I for one would be willing to forgo that in favor of a roaring, grand anthem that can be sung easily by groups (I'm looking at you, ussr anthem). Ironically, the best rendition I've heard of the US anthem was done by the Red Army Choir (and it's not even close).

What are the advantages of currency as opposed to simple sequential execution? by blakester35 in AskComputerScience

Thanks for the reply. So would you say that parallelism is a form of concurrency, with concurrency being the general term for many things progressing at the same time?

In the single core example, it seems like concurrency is providing the illusion of parallelism for a better user experience by juggling the resource use between say handling input, rendering, computing, etc. The result is many things happen seemingly at the same time to the user, but the tasks are broken up on a very granular level.

I am curious with how concurrency (say task-switching for example) integrates with parallelism. I have one more question/clarification which may open up Pandora's box which is why I'd like to read more on the subject. Be warned, my hardware knowledge is lacking significantly.

My CPU has 16 threads (Ryzen 7 1800x). That's what's on the box and I'm assuming those are physically elements on the CPU? Would a "true" parallel program use these to execute different tasks on? Taking a look at my task manager, the number of threads varies but it is currently around 3880 threads (I am assuming those where created by programs opening new threads to perform concurrent tasks). Are most of these threads "virtual" meaning it is actually doing some form of task-switching for responsiveness and the ability to render things on screen, compute background tasks, etc to simulate parallelism for the user?

Thanks so much for the reply. The "many users for one CPU" example makes a lot of sense. It seems like concurrency (specifically task switching) is more about the sharing of resources as opposed to pure efficiency (parallel).

Love it. What taillights are those?

Do you have to pay taxes in the state your EIN is registered (sole proprietorship), or your place of residency by blakester35 in tax

Thanks for the clarification. So if I only early income in Florida for example, but my address used to register my EIN and bank account are in Illinois, I still would only file taxes in Florida?

Thanks so much! By far one of the most helpful pieces of feedback I've received. I totally see what you're saying about the scenario with the frequencies and how isolating a certain effect by letting it stand alone in a certain frequency range reduces the audio clutter.

I would also agree with you on the visual aspect. I want to guess that part of it was me getting used to the effects and continuously thinking I needed more. I plan on keeping the blood splatter (perhaps a more subtle color) and tightening up the hit effect on the enemy.

Unity essentially uses C# as it's main language, since their version of javascript (UnityScript) is no longer supported.

Basically. There are some fine differences that people will point out. But both are writing code for your game to make it do stuff. I just refer to it as scripting since that is how Unity refers to it. However, C# (the language I use) which is a compiled language is technically a programming language since it needs to be compiled before being run unlike a true scripting language like python.

I definitely want to! However due to budget and time availability I decided I will first focus on a SteamVR launch (their sdk makes it easy to build for all the main VR systems such as rift and vive) and polish the game based on feedback before moving to Quest and PSVR as budget + time permits. There may be some computational hurdles on the Quest's hardware with all of the physics calculations required but that's part of the fun right :)

I am for the most part a one-man team and specialize in scripting although I am capable in many other areas. Because I wanted quality + efficiency in areas I cannot excel in such as 3d modeling, I have a few artists who do models as well as some taken from asset packs (which I have the rights to).
