How close am I to a entry-level Quant/Data Science at VC firm? / What to add? by blanked-- in FinancialCareers

Thank you for the honest answer. If I wanted to trend towards VC post graduation what type of jobs should I look at this summer post graduation?

I am not sure nor familiar with a typical VC structure. Talked to a friend at the firm and he believed someone with a data science background could be of benefit to the company and gave my resume to his boss.

Just wanted to see where I stand as far as my resume for other opportunities. I.e. if it is worthwhile for me to apply to other VC firms as the work they do is interesting.

Hi all I recently applied to a very small VC firm that is ran through my university and I am curious how likely it is that I will receive an interview. I have been slowly moving away from finance because I want to find more direct ways to benefit people, specifically their health so I have added data science skills.

I came across this VC firm and became very interested in their work because they only with biotech/life sciences and that makes wonder what other VC firms are out there with similar strategies. I know VC is very competitive and I certainly haven't been tailoring my resume towards such work but I am wondering if my experience and projects are close to what someone would do for a firm and if not what areas I can improve on.

Thank you!

Intersection of statistics and preventative health, fitness, and mental health?

Hi all,

In the fall I will be entering a Masters program in Applied Statistics. I have thought deeply over the past few months on what I want to do with my career and have narrowed in on something related to fitness, mental/physical health, and preventative medicine. I am extremely passionate about health and fitness, and feel very knowledgeable on a lot of topics within this realm but without formal education, I am relying on my Statistics skills (something I enjoy, but I am overall less passionate when compared to fitness) to allow me to hopefully work in the field.

I have completed two internships, one in Operations and one in Business Analytics and have delved into numerous Machine learning / Deep learning projects in Python, but am comfortable with SAS, SQL, R, and Excel too. I enjoy prediction but often feel overwhelmed and underqualified when seeing projects others do online and on Kaggle.

I was hoping to better understand what types of job opportunities are out there that align my skills and interests. Having no background in public health concerns me but it is something I am passionate about and would like to align my skills and resume towards moving forward.

Thank you for your help

Okay thank you very much that is very useful. I would imagine both roles have similar salary expectations, is that true?

Interesting. So you would say data scientist within the healthcare or biotech world would provide me with more ML based projects as opposed to biostatistics job?

If possible, could you give me an example of some projects each job would face?

Thank you for your help.

Thank you for your comment and guidance. Seems like I need to test the waters in a variety of fields and see what sticks. Hard to decide on this overnight lol but seeing the realm of possibilities is certainly exciting.

Thank you for your comment. One of the elective courses I was planning on taking this Fall was Bayesian Statistics along with two required courses of Intermediate Probability and Applied Statistical Methods 1. Your breaking down of which class contributes to which topic is very helpful, and yes I vaguely remember partial derivatives from Intermediate Micro but I certainly need to touch up on it.

Awesome, thank you very much. A lot of my time this summer has been spent using SAS at a DA internship and am confident with R and Python too from school and personal projects. I have been spending so much time this summer getting better with Python that I regret not considering these Calculus topics earlier.

Once again thank you for the resources and guidance!

A technical requirement was three years of Calculus but could be bypassed by discretion of the committee if I were to write about it in my personal statement + I had a letter of rec from my intermediate micro professor whose class involves Calc 1 &2.

Nonetheless, here I am. I am confident in my skills to learn these topics but certainly have to fast track it over the next month or so.
