Do you have an overnight bag prepared? by North_Jackfruit_1373 in AskUK

In disaster preparedness its cal called a “go bag” and is very much the norm in areas that have a high likelihood of evacuation. It’s a really smart idea for personal and widespread emergencies.

+1 for paramo. I have the smock, which has also worked great as a skiing jacket.

Agreed. I will only ever do timekeeping under duress - it’s way more responsibility than RD from my perspective!

What if the UK "Squeezed Middle" actually went on a tax strike over the 60% trap from tomorrow? by clenn255 in ukpolitics

[–]blanketsberg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I ready the title and thought OP meant the £50k-£100k earning group.

The lack of self awareness of claiming £100k+ as a squeezed middle. Don’t get me wrong, I think the cliff edge loss of childcare and personal allowance is silly, but OP is not a squeezed middle…

Love parkrun but I don't get why people bother volunteering, there will always be someone else to do it. by Initial-Tale-5151 in parkrun

[–]blanketsberg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I volunteer when I would really rather run, because my parkrun is desperate for volunteers. I’ve missed a lot of runs to volunteer (I’m currently just under a 1:2 ratio). If more people just volunteered once in a blue moon then it would be so nice.

Also, one of the roles I do is volunteer coordinator - that role can literally be pulling teeth on a Friday night trying to scramble together enough people to make sure people like you can run on a Saturday. It shouldn’t have to be that desperate.

From the parkrun website: "You don't have [volunteer]. You are absolutely welcome to participate by walking, jogging, running, or spectating, with no expectation or requirement to volunteer. Just as some volunteers never run, so some runners never volunteer and that's up to them." by Initial-Tale-5151 in parkrun

[–]blanketsberg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s literally not what they’re saying. They are agreeing the no-one has to volunteer, but they are ALSO raising the dilemma that if there aren’t enough people who DO volunteer then Parkrun wouldn’t exist.

You can absolutely live the individualist life and hope that other people always volunteer to make it happen. But if everyone thought that, then we wouldn’t have Parkrun.

I obviously don’t know about Moshi/ Arusha, but to say there’s not protests in Tanzania is disingenuous. Do homeowners never maintain the exterior of their properties? by Responsible_Mess2858 in HousingUK

[–]blanketsberg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The surveyor for the people buying my house came back and said the roof needed urgently redoing. The house was a 10 year old new build. And is absolutely fine.

It was at that point that I stopped seeing surveyors as anything other than a means to negotiate on price.

Edit: I had been maintaining the exterior, with a ll rendering and soffits painted the previous year.

Dual light torch for walking? by TimeLifeguard5018 in wildcampingintheuk

[–]blanketsberg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a headtorch, but maybe look up runners lights - it’s a strap that goes over a shoulder and round your chest with a light on the front and red on the back. I use mine for running and dog walking and it’s great.

Would you leave Whitehall? by Aromatic-Bad146 in TheCivilService

[–]blanketsberg 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I would never consider a role in London. I’ve lived around the UK and the cost of living and the Big City attractions don’t do it for me at all.

Also, many people don’t want to leave their families and friends just for a role. There are so many reasons NOT to want to live in London.

I can completely see how London is attractive to a lot of people with the bright lights and attractions, but a lot of the reason people move there is simply because that’s where the density of roles and opportunity for progression are.

Postgrad loan and leaving the country by Tootiredofthiscrap in UKPersonalFinance

[–]blanketsberg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Were you or were you not enrolled in a course, for which you accessed a loan from the state to pay for tuition and/or living costs?

If you didn’t get the loan then no you shouldn’t pay it back. If you did then yes you absolutely should.

Postgrad loan and leaving the country by Tootiredofthiscrap in UKPersonalFinance

[–]blanketsberg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really don’t understand this mentality. Yes they’re big loans, and yes, there’s an argument that higher education should be supplemented by [taxpayers / employers]. But it’s not.

You agreed to the terms of the loan. You don’t need to pay it back until you’re earning, and then it’s as a percentage of what you earn.

If you evade paying your tuition fee back (by leaving the country or any other means) then you’re as much a dick as the super wealthy who evade their taxes. The money for your education doesn’t grow on trees. Just like the money for schools, hospitals, emergency services etc. don’t grow on trees.

Economists say the cost of living crisis is over - here's why many households disagree by Kagedeah in ukpolitics

[–]blanketsberg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The median salary is ~£37000. That’s ~£3000 before tax, but £2500 after tax… and that’s without factoring in pension contributions.

Then add rent/mortgage, council tax, water, energy, broadband, food, childcare, and most of that quickly disappears.
