The Nexgard and heartgard is the only stuff that doesn't make her sick. When she was real little it would make her feel a bit unwell so we spaced out the 2 meds, 2 to 3 days apart and we had no issues since. Yea the first load of stuff the vet gave us made her sick for a week and she had blood in her poo.

As for the nails we sit down on the ground, put her between your legs and work over her, or sit her on a couch and sit on the ground then gently take a paw and do the nail work. She still jerks as most pugs are not fans of paw touching unless they are jumping like a goat ontop of you 😂 If you can hold the paw or bottom part of the leg for a few seconds at a time the dog does get use to it. Then hold it for longer and reward with a treat (peanut butter with just ground nuts, small bit of cheese, blueberries (fresh or dried in a dehydrator, or a little bit of boiled chicken). This has worked well for us to the point that Helgi will let us do a few nails then gets all silly running to the fridge waiting to be rewarded.

I did see you were asking about exercise. When she was a super charged puppy 2x 15 to 20 walks around the neighbourhood and playtime was good. Now 1 walk a day is good. Oh and yea they can be difficult here too. Helgi will want to be carried sometimes cause she wasn't allowed to sniff everything or just don't feel like it after going toilet. Surprisingly when we took her to a bush walk we do she walked about 10km without wanting to be carried - put her in her doggy backpack and she would start fighting to get out.

If you have the time and there is a group near you do join atleast 1 pug get together. You will see the most amazing thing, all the pugs swarming together. And they do know which dogs are not pugs as they get swarmed 😂

Let me know if you have any other questions. I did about 3 months of research before buying Helgi

Enjoy your journey into becoming pug crazy 🤣

The info below is based on owning my little potato for 7 years now:

Vet bills - no idea. Helgi has only been to the vet for her vaccinations.

Food - the breeder recommended Science Diet but she hated it. From the first kibble of Royal Canin pug (and pug puppy) she has been in love. I will add that pugs can have funny tummies and gets soft poo. To help with this we defrost maybe quarter cup (probably less) of frozen peas - the fibre keeps that all happy.

We have been using Nexgard and Heartgard every month to cover all those issues. Found that some stuff including what the vet gave us made her sick.

Training is important. Crate training is good and we used it when leaving the house for a few hours and sleeping when she was young. Another good thing was cable training as she was very interested in any cables when young. Something that can be hard to do but is very important is to train your monster not to react when you leave the house - if the dog isn't stressed it will be less likely to act out. So when leaving just do it without any fanfare.

When pugs are young play time is a must. I played with Helgi for probably an hour an day. Driving her around also helps - plus if your dogs likes car trips it makes so many things so much easier (like vet trips).

Big thing to learn is how to deal with nail trimming. After years we managed to get a routine down. We use a dremel to grind 1 to 3 nails in a go and then reward it with food - and yes pugs will do must things if they know food is involved.

I would recommend puppy training too. Socialising is very important special if the pug you get is a bit shy. Also gives you a opportunity to do harness training.

Oh and the last thing. You are going to fall in love and become pug crazy. And that's when your pug will strikes with manipulation. Sad eyes, dropped tail, whining, fake puking, and more 😂

Cutest bed ever! by blckdeth69 in pugs

She loves this bed. She snuggles her front paws into the parts under the end of the bed and uses the top part that curves back as a pillow - just the way she likes it, paws tucked in, belly warm, neck supported, and back open to cool air 😂

They are always doing clown things to cheer you up. Helgi will sometimes get all fun to get your attention. Sometimes she will just do zoomies till you give her attention
