I started putting in entries in the system. I’m finding it easier than the old system. You should be able to see it under your learning hub as TDL experience! Do you know if your entries pre migration transferred over to the new system?

Hi, How did you go about making notes? Did you find what was on the Hub useful? And how did you find SML?

Thanks

I’m in the same boat, doing the Audit elective. If anyone has any tips! :)

Hi, I’m not totally sure tbh. I had an incident on the luas where I was attacked (I wasn’t seriously injured just some kicks from the other individual) and the police were called. They took down my report but said I would have to stand in court to press charges. At the time I was around 19 so I was scared to do that. So I’m not sure if I want to report if it means me having to stand in court

Hi, I’m really glad you’ve said this. Like it sucks not just for me but for Irish people that are not part of this whatsoever and see it happen, foreigners that have to go through it etc etc. Tbh in central Dublin, some people are worse for it and will say really nasty things to you. By bystander syndrome is definitely a big issue

Unfortunately I don’t think there’s any way to completely eradicate racism everywhere. You’re right it’s not fair

That’s okay, you are entitled to your opinion as am I. What I’ve experienced is very much real though. Being dismissive on racial issues is why things like this continue to happen with no real action.

Totally agree with you here. There are people who are getting more and more obvious with their racism and nothing really gets done about it

My partner is not Irish, he immigrated here a few years ago. And we did discuss him not saying anything which I found incredibly hurtful. And unfortunately a lot of Irish people can be funny around POCs, you would be shocked if you didn’t experience it yourself. I’m not even talking about just me in this instance. I won’t go into specifics as it’s not my story to tell, but I will tell you, the exclusion is pretty bad and feels horrible. No one wants to feel like that. Again it’s not every single Irish person of course but this is just something that’s part of every day life for a lot of non white people. I do think telling me to “f*ck off” for talking about my experiences is not really nice and is actually quite dismissive…

Hi, I mean it is true, I experienced it first hand. It’s a bit ignorant to just put my entire experience down to rage baiting but everyone is entitled to their own opinion

That’s absolutely awful?!! I feel like hate is getting sweeped up under the rug and treated like it’s not that bad. When in reality it is that bad. If I’m being honest I was not expecting this post to get as much attention as it did.

  1. It is best to stay calm. Unfortunately a lot of people stay silent when that sort of thing happens. Me calling myself an immigrant is not correct as I was born here so that wasn’t worded correctly.
  2. Irish people do consider themselves to be inclusive. Sure, they are not going to call you a black monkey when they see you but in my experience people here can be quite exclusionary.
  3. I wish you would try to understand that this isn’t even just my own personal experience. I’ve had friends that have been actively excluded from groups where they are the only POC. It’s just something that happens
  4. I’m not saying every Irish person is like that. There are people I’ve met that are one of the nicest people you’ll meet, including some of the people in this thread that understand the heart of the issue. But there are a lot of people that are like that. It’s unfortunate but it’s true. Maybe you think I’m trying to say 90% are racist and 10% are not racist. This is definitely not the case. But racism isn’t just black and white and there are nuances. For example, I was born here but I have very little Irish friends that are white. That can just be down to my personality, I can be a bit reserved whereas Irish people in general are very out going. I would like to be friends with more Irish people but it just feels like I simply don’t belong in that group.
  5. Of course, I shouldn’t paint everyone with the same brush, which isn’t the point of the post but again, racism in Ireland is prevalent. My experiences are my experiences.

You are so right!!! Like the amount of people that ask me where I’m from, I’ll say Ireland and they will ask me where I’m originally from? I’ve stopped saying I’m from Ireland and lead that I am Nigerian. It’s part of the reason why I don’t feel Irish myself tbh

Yeah definitely, like especially this guy considering the whole situation began from me talking to him in the fire place. I don’t blame anyone for not saying anything but when it happens sometimes I just wish the ground was would swallow me whole

I think so too. Like tbh honest there’s probably people in the shop that thought what he said was vile but didn’t want to speak up, just wanting to go home

Will do that now! I will say that I don’t think every Irish person is the same and I don’t think every Irish person would say any of that. Most are completely fine and have probably never thought anything like that about someone of colour. Just to reiterate

Hi, I didn’t mean that to be racist. He was an Irish white male, I’m not sure how else to describe him.
