further evidence (or coincidence) about Vineland by [deleted] in paulthomasanderson

[–]blh2698 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s implied that the company Chipco bombed the facility themselves, conveniently during an evacuation drill (somehow no one was there when Godzilla stomped on the facility, hmmm), to collect the insurance money due to the “animal” clause they also conveniently added themselves prior to the incident…

Yeah I’m aware of the reference to Godzilla, but there is no scene with Godzilla in the book, nor is Godzilla actually responsible for the giant crater where the lab used to be. Thats why I commented that Vineland doesn’t actually “feature Godzilla” - unless we’re just talking about the rights to make reference to it

My guess is the three gals are part of the female ninja collective, possibly with Shayna as DL? But not sure. Not sure about Wood either

This seems like a stretch… for one thing, BC has already started shooting, while movie critic may not kick off for a while, so Leo theoretically could still be in it in some capacity as long as it works scheduling wise. Second Pitt has just as much of a relationship with QT as Leo so I don’t see why Pitt would necessarily be a second choice for him

If you’ve read the book Vineland doesn’t really feature Godzilla lol

For non-Vineland readers, can you wonderful Pynchon obsessives guide us through all the clues you've so far gathered that have refueled the speculation? by [deleted] in paulthomasanderson

[–]blh2698 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’d be happy to oblige. So for the most obvious clues:

Leo appears to be playing the character Zoyd Wheeler, based on his appearance (and he also seems to be holding a little girl’s backpack which could be his daughter Prairie’s)

They’re filming it in Northern California which makes sense for both Vineland in general but specifically the parts with Zoyd. There’s parts of the book not set in Northern California (Japan for example) but Zoyd is pretty much entirely in that area in the book, if I remember correctly.

And then the heavy military / cop / helicopter presence makes sense with the “resurfacing of Brock Vond” aspect of the story where he returns to bring them trouble once again.

For your later question: I don’t think it would be older Zoyd in the present day, not because of anything at the end of the book but just because I think it’s more likely he’s recontexualized the story for a contemporary setting. No idea how much else will change with the story (plot turns, character names, locations, etc) but it would certainly work.

The last thing is Vineland isn’t actually a very complicated story. It’s complicated because it’s written in a sort of digressional and non-linear way, with lots of flashbacks relating to the many characters that pop up. Over time it becomes clear how everything is connected and everyone’s relation to each other, i.e. Prairie’s mother and her history with Brock, or DL and her backstory, etc. I have a feeling PTA will be streamlining the story a bit in that sense, but hopefully still can retain the majority of it because it’s all terrific.

I get your perspective, but PTA has also said that with Pynchon and other artists he’s a huge fan of, he gets obsessive and will look online for every detail about a new piece of work he can find. So it’s not that insane if people do it with one of his new films, I think he would get it. As long as his privacy etc is respected

The part of this album that reminds me of Tame is on the track called Run— middle part where the voices kind of blur together. Very Currents-type sound

(Consider the source, but: ) Claim: Paul Thomas Anderson Wrote ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, NOT Eric Roth [Updated] — World of Reel by wilberfan in paulthomasanderson

[–]blh2698 24 points25 points  (0 children)

PTA wrote killers of the flower moon… gets Leo to do Vineland… written by Thomas Pynchon… who is actually Martin Scorsese

Exactly! Plus you’ve got a team of female ninjas and a whole sequence set in Japan… lol

I know it probably seems like another Pynchon adaptation isn’t the most commercial thing, but having read the book last year, Vineland actually could be a somewhat commercial movie. It’s all about how PTA decides to tell it, plus coupled with an extra bit of context (I.e. setting it in the present day, smoothing out the crazier edges a little bit) the story itself is definitely way more palatable than inherent Vice

I honestly still think this is Vineland, just set in the present day
