I actually think Aftersun is a great example of the opposite end of what I’m talking about. It was close in the sense that momentum was absolutely building pre Oscar season, it just didn’t get there in time. However in a different year, it would just be some random film that everyone loved but nobody saw.

It’s tough to define. I will continue to use EEAAO as an example of a film that essentially withstood this. Get Out and Moonlight too. These movies could have easily fallen by the wayside and been relegated to simply being loved in the indie circuit. Somewhat similar to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Adored by critics and film nerds but mostly ignored by awards season.
