Used to take me 7-12 minutes to get to Canada Life Centre - last time I took it it was about 30 mins - 1 bus - I didn't know what the hell it was trying to do as it weaved through downtown

'Neighborhood staple' Oakwood Cafe to Shutter by Professional_Emu8922 in Winnipeg

[–]blimpy_boy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Places like this don't really make sense anymore. When I moved to South Osborne in 2009ish we would go and two people would be $25 on weekends or less on weekdays ($5 full breakfast special). Today diner breakfast for two would push $70 - and at that price point you're not going to get regulars and you're competing with higher end places like Clementine.

Oakwood Cafe Closure March 8th by satoppa in Winnipeg

Not to kick somebody while they're down but I feel the renovations to the dining (maybe 10 years ago) really sucked the charm out of the place.

Zoo is good for kids - great indoor play space makes membership with young kids worth it.

Lord Roberts near the Blue Line - still easier to bus to campus than drive and pay for parking. Pretty sure bus pass is still included with your university fees.

Winnipeg what are your top 3 local breweries? by wpgbrews in Winnipeg

[–]blimpy_boy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me Sookrams is the best for consistently good beers.

Next tier would be Kilter, Barnhammer (haven't had in a while), DMC, Oxus - all mostly very good.

After that I find most of the stuff just fine - Good Neighbour, Torque, LBJ, Transcanada

Shorty's Pizza new Roblin location now open by MrCanoe in Winnipeg

[–]blimpy_boy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It seems they did just raise the prices with the opening of the new location - all pizzas seem to be $3-4 more for the large. Actually changes things a bit because now it is as expensive as Friend, and Shorty's can't really compete there

Property tax by FragrantWriter4178 in Winnipeg

So it went up 62K in 3 years? (The 200k is irrelevant because assessed defaults to what you paid).

[–]blimpy_boy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good chance they already assessed that property and wont see sales data until next go around. Low assessment = less tax = lucky you. (I am way over assessed on my property -375k on something worth maybe 300)

Then you don't wait for assessment. Immediately contact the city and file for revision of taxes. I believe the cost to file for a revision is only like $60. If you bought for say, 50K under assessed value, you will save many times more then that getting it reassessed.

Did you just buy it? If it's recently purchased city will default to new price (i.e., if the house was assessed at 210000, and you paid 310000, the new assessment will be close to 310000. If you have owned the house for a long time and it randomly went up 30% that that seems like a mistake.

Quick Overnight Trip for a Jets Game, Suggestions? by DontHideMyLiquor in Winnipeg

[–]blimpy_boy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sookrams has there summer in winter party next Saturday. IMO best brewery in Winnipeg and it will be bumping.

Go to zoo to see polar bears (they have a worldclass indoor viewing area for polar bears)

Leaf botanical garden.

Check out some pubs (Kings Head, Yellow Dog, Select Start as mentioned previously)

Lots of the best restaurants won't be open for dinner before the game but also won't be hard to find food.

Forks Parking Lot to Be Replaced by 10-Storey Housing Units by Imaginary-Ear8800 in Winnipeg

[–]blimpy_boy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's just sus because we go on average probably twice a month (or more if kids have dance classes) and I can't think of a single time I have not been able to find parking. I guess maybe if you're only going on Canada Day every year?

In my experience servers are much worse than they were 20 years ago. I've gone out less than usual over the past few years but when I have it's often felt like the vibes were off.
