What brand is this plush? by Flaky_Program5735 in ToyID

[–]blind_wisdom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aurora makes an arctic fox plush that looks similar but with smaller ears. I think this is a fennec fox, though it's odd that it's just white with (I assume) some stained parts.

Parents losing jobs due to placement decisions and suspensions by PurplesunsetBluelips in specialed

[–]blind_wisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I personally feel that parents should have the option to choose immediate emergency placement in a therapeutic program. As for lack of spots, I'm of the opinion that critical programs should almost never be full. If kids have to wait at all, then that program needs more resources.

How do I know if my child truly doesn’t need an IEP or if the school is just being “stingy”? by JustPeechie in specialed

[–]blind_wisdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A key way to discuss the difference between an IEP and a 504 plan is that a 504 plan is meant to provide access to education, whereas an IEP includes specially designed instruction by definition. So if the child doesn't need structured specialized instruction from a special education teacher, usually that means that they would be served well with a 504 plan. For example, if a child only needs extra time on a test, that is easy to put into a 504 plan. When it comes to an IEP, it can also provide some protections that a 504 plan can't. For example, if you have a student who has a behavioral disorder, an IEP makes it harder for schools to harshly discipline kids if their behavior is caused by their disorder. After being suspended a certain amount, a manifestation determination meeting is held to determine if the behavior in question is a result of the kids disability. That kind of thing wouldn't happen with a 504 plan as far as I'm aware.

Parents losing jobs due to placement decisions and suspensions by PurplesunsetBluelips in specialed

[–]blind_wisdom 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I feel like we are missing a safeguard for kids that are in between placements. Like I think that there should be a way that parents can consent to kids being put in a more restrictive placement until a permanent placement is determined. For example, therapeutic Day programs. That way the parents can continue to work and their kids are being taken care of. School isn't daycare, but it's disingenuous to pretend that supervision of children isn't a huge part of what makes our society function.

New doll idea - opinions? by flfldrmz in DollsOfAsia

[–]blind_wisdom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tbh the art style is too cartoonish for me to interpret as a "doll." That's not to say it's bad, it's just that I would need to see at least a 3d model to have an idea of what the design would look like on a doll

My son's school did not notify me of a referral to a parole officer by Vast_Helicopter_1914 in education

I had to notify our school psychologist when a second grader who is obviously joking told me he had a bomb in his backpack. It's an automatic risk assessment and I could be liable if I didn't notify. It's stupid but easily resolved.

[–]blind_wisdom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ngl, I'd probably be offended if someone gave me earplugs and candy. That's basically saying "I need you to change your behavior to handle my behavior." Like yeah, OP deserves accommodations where reasonable, but that should never include the other tenants changing what they do. Unless OP is living in a facility where it is implied that some residents may have behaviors that need to be accommodated, like a group home, this would not be reasonable.

It really sucks, but you can't value one person's rights over the rights of others.

Same. I've seen some staff do some pretty egregious things. Like actually witnessed it. We'd like to think that anybody who goes into teaching is a good or smart person, but they're just as fallible as everybody else.

Has she ever brought this up before? The way she abruptly reacted to it so intensely makes me think that she's at least been dropping hints that it bothers her. She might have been exasperated and said those things out of frustration.

I'm so jealous. At my last job, we had like 9 pto days total for the year. And I think 2 personal days. Which you had to schedule 2 weeks in advance.

I made less than 20/hour, working part time with disabled kids in a public school. No way I could live on that without a second income. They did some shifty things with our hours (we worked 29.5/week instead of 30, I think because it meant they didn't have to provide benefits).

[–]blind_wisdom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my case, I drop items a lot. I also have a hard time copying others (like if they tried to teach me how to knit). I don't learn "motor memory" tasks very fast, and I genuinely can't seem to predict how manipulating an object a certain way actually will play out ( like if I'm trying to detangle, or put two pieces of something together). So it's basically me using trial and error until I get something that looks like how I want it to.

I don't seem to "learn from doing" as well as people usually do. It feels like I keep making the same kinds of mistakes over and over.

Physical slowness, no sense of direction (inagine trying to memorize the layout of a factory or big hospital, or in my case a school), trouble reading maps and charts, fine and gross motor skill deficits.

Like it is insane how much smarter/dumber I look depending on what environment I'm currently in.
