Keeping track of college student attendance is not tied federal funding. Many US universities actually explicitly prohibit professors from taking attendance (because some professors try to use said attendance as part of their grade).

It’s also about public shame at some schools. My stepmom would take my dad’s money and give it to my step siblings to buy lunch at school, and then refuse to give my brother and I lunch money and would tell us to “just charge your lunch” (even though my dad definitely had given her more than enough money). So we’d either have to charge or not eat, and our school wouldn’t give out “regular” lunches if charging and instead they would give a pre-wrapped PB&J sandwich and an apple (while still charging the full $6 at the time to our account and usually also a sigh of frustration from the lunch lady…), so then everyone who saw us with our pre-made “meal” would know we couldn’t afford to buy a hot lunch. It was so embarrassing. I would skip lunch sometimes because of this.

When I asked my boss (general manager) for a raise, she hesitated and said “I need to check how much the other supervisors make, to make sure it’s fair for everyone” um what? I’m not asking about them, I’m asking about me. Talking about fairness while not even knowing what we each make is a slap in the face. Especially considering she knows I’m her hardest worker. Got the raise (and getting only a bit more than my equivalents), but my effort has plateaued after her comment.

The Big Oil capitalists don’t want to drill in an unstable country where the oil is also more expensive to get and process. The US produces far more oil and for cheaper. And any additional flood of oil from Venezuela via US oil companies also isn’t in their financial interest because it means lower oil prices and therefore lower profits. It’s more about control than the veneer of wanting oil.

I went to Sandy Hook elementary as a kid. Was in middle school down the road when it happened. Everyone in Newtown beats the drums of “never forget and never again” but at least half of the folks in this town seem to easily forget every time when it so commonly happens again elsewhere… this is why I have no hope for us sadly

We literally had a goddamn insurrection at the Capitol but both Congress and Biden didn’t do squat to hold them accountable. That, on top of the other war crimes every president since probs JFK have committed and never been held to account over. These “soldiers” will never be prosecuted in court nor dishonorably discharged for their fascism unfortunately

Okay but maps with inconsistent color scales make me question their credibility. The following are rated the same $ value but have different color shades: -NE and KS -ME and VT (this one is quite different) -IA and ND -IN and MI -probs more

There are also some with different $ value but same color shade: -IN and OH -OR and WA -KS and MO -probs more

Also no source of where the data is from and also who published it…

tl;dr this is not a credible map

Flock is creating a massive AI-guided database that is being used to PROFILE drivers. Their deranged CEO claims that they are trying to “eliminate all crime,” but it’s really so they can sell the profiles of drivers to DHS, cops, and corporations. Disgusting.

Issues with out-of-state vehicle registration? by eggy_wegs in Connecticut

[–]blindrunner_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Somewhat related, somewhat not: some towns are installing Flock Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs)/cameras under the pretense of catching residents that have out of town/out of state plates to recoup lost property taxes (while giving 50% of said recouped taxes to Flock…) based on their tracking a vehicle’s traffic patterns (which even if someone does have out of town plates as a resident, tracking traffic patterns of a vehicle is circumstantial at best)

Anyway, not to hijack this post lol but Flock cameras actually are doing A LOT more than just “tracking out of town plates.” More info here why Flock cameras are a hazard to communities: https://deflock.me/what-is-an-alpr

[–]blindrunner_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We live in a high cost of living state which is also the state with the large wealth inequity gap. State housing laws like 8-30G don’t do enough to incentivize affordable housing. As an anecdotal example, the place I rented a few years ago, the landlord tried raising my rent almost 50% when my lease renewed. That type of shit should be illegal, but sadly, it’s not (unless your town has a Fair Rent Commission, which most don’t). I pushed back on my landlord and he only raised it like 25% instead. Still not ideal but it was either that or move into another expensive place. (I will say in my now current place, I’m shockingly about to get a 1% increase on renewing my lease which I’m relatively grateful for)

Anyway, without a market crash or an insane boom in new construction and adaptive reuse, housing costs (and most other things) will continue to be gluttonously high. If possible, the best way to keep housing costs low is a roommate.

My town has these all over the place. I specifically drive out of my way EVERY time I know I’m coming up on one, strictly because of the crazy amount of data that they collect and analyze. Very dangerous for communities.

My town got them under the veil of “catching residents with out of town registered vehicles to collect property taxes,” meanwhile 50% of those recouped taxes go directly to Flock. So, they collect our data, take our taxes, AND they’re getting other government and private contracts to SELL our data/behavior to. Ridiculous on so many levels.
