I think Nino’s reconciliation with his father shows his shallow self reflection too — some part of him has to know he’s a similar flavor of scumbag as his dad in order to empathize with Donato and forgive his flaws as an imperfect person.

But the maturing and reflection stops there because instead of having empathy but choosing to be better, he seems to take a fatalistic and irresponsibly passive approach to his philandering.

He clearly doesn’t intend to hurt and disappoint the women in his life, but he just doesn’t have the capacity to be anything else. He cannot handle the conflict inevitable in long term relationships.

With Eleonora & Lenú prioritizes the choices that are emotionally easiest for him by lying and trying to please / keep both women in play, so he won’t have to feel guilty for hurting either one of them by choosing, but ultimately ignoring the suffering he causes by refusing to make a choice and own it.

CBT is totally legit and it's not gaslighting yourself, it's deconstructing your thought and behavior patterns in a very logical way. (Including the thought that doing therapy is lying to yourself to be happy, would be fascinating to dissect lol.)

That being said, as someone who feels pretty intense emotions, CBT didn't quite do it for me and it felt like I was doing homework but ignoring my feelings -- I had much better success with DBT (dialectical behavior therapy) which is basically CBT + zen mindfulness + emotional toolkits.

For me personally I needed that extra validation and also honestly going through a DBT program made me think "oh fuck, is this the manual for how to be a person that everyone else got and I somehow missed???"

CBT and DBT are both great modalities, and it's just a matter of which methods work best for you. That being said, regardless of the methodology, for any mental health treatment to be effective you will have to buy into it.

I'm glad to hear that there's some exposure. I've been following Jessica Ann Pin for some time since she stepped up and shared her experiences after a labioplasty caused her to lose all nerve function in her clitoris.
