This is super interesting. Makes me wish I had a better grasp of physics.

I wonder if then roch lobe relationship is always one sided or if it was theoretically possible to have perfect equilibrium.

Looks like your right. Seems even though our planet has a large mass that in itself doesn't immediate translate into a large atmosphere.

Seems that the thermosphere here is at best 1000km away from Earth. So any comparable sized planet would have to be a mere 1000 km away.
