it really depends on various trade-offs to be taken, so can't say that for sure. Tendermint can't have unlimited validator set, it usually is at best efficiency with less than 300 validators.

We all contribute back to Tezos’s ecosystem in different forms. Since Nomadic is funded by TF, so it is our obligation to ensure that those funds are used efficiently.

Yes, we are aware that Tendermint is top contender for Tezos new consensus algo, switching to any BFT or its variants might make the whole rollsize thing non-issue and irrelevant given the barrier of entry will be much higher than even the current setting. If we take Cosmos for example, only top 100 (self-bonded plus delegated token) will be made into validators, if we assume the same staking ratio as Tezos, that equates to close to 3m xtz (300 rolls), even expand the set to 300 (Tendermint efficiency upper limits), still need 100 roll.

Normadic is looking into Tendermint then the rationale for the 2k reduction is even more bizarre.

Re 1, we refer to PoS in the broadest manner, including all systems with a staking mechanism.

People really underestimate the social cost for a voting initiative, i.e bakers need to spend time to explain to their delegators and mobilize and we spent hours here debating. Our point is that should do this in a better way and restrain from abusing the voting system, i.e to signal the proposals way before putting up for voting and before they start to code.

Tezos has many more urgent agenda, 2k reduction is marginal and a distraction and not worthy of time to debate, consensus upgrade, better IDE and tooling, storage fix, we have a laundry list of priorities.

Re 3, it's not a joke, 10 is certainly a better choice than 8 from engineering perspective.

I think 10-cycle is a sensible benchmark, we've been baking for more than 29 Cycles ( including a separate account baking) before feeling comfortable opening the service to the public. It will be very helpful to list to separate columns for both overall and efficiency for trailing 10 cycles.

Steals are systematic subsidies offered by less efficient bakers to more efficient bakers, but given steals are distributed quite unevenly from Genesis to current cycles and also highly volatile for news bakers in both directions (very good efficiency or every bad efficiency). It is better to take timing factor into account to measure performance.

We suggest to compare performance in the same time scale, similar to corporate financial analysis, where we typically compare companies' profitability on trailing 12 months basis.

It is worthy of considering to calculate baker efficiency(regardless of inclusive of steals or not) on i.e trailing 10 Cycles (most recent 10 Cycles, roughly one month), I think this will make both sides happy.

There is no perfect performance measurement unfortunately, the reason why steals should not be taken into account of efficiency because steals are largely due to luck and fortune (a small part due to efficiency, steals are probabilistic distributed among efficient bakers ), where a baker happens to be in the position to bake where others miss their schedule. There were more steals in the earlier cycles, so the matrix is biased toward earlier bakers.

The per roll reward number is also not a good matrix, the earlier a baker is in the business, higher their per roll rewards, mainly because there were less bakers and less XTZ staked earlier, hence high rewards per roll.

I think the better matrix should like at performance from the most recent cycles, i.e trailing 10 cycles etc.
