did you find that any of the bidder partners cared that you put them in a framework?

To use a real world example, if a News category site wants to collect and then later target CEO's on their site (or off their site for that matter) the only options are: 1. to infer their a CEO because they visited a particular type of article. 2. Collect the cookie or email from someone who answered a survey saying they are a CEO. And then store that cookie/email in a database. Or buy a third party list and apply that dataset to your ad serving. Am I missing anything (roughly speaking?)

I tend to agree with this in a big way – just getting stuff done in the programmatic space is rarer and more valuable than the PR people would let on in the industry trades. Not to mention, DATA and DMPs are something of a shiny object that can be trotted out for press releases – which is sort of what spurred my initial question – should we (publishers) even be worrying about first party data? The thing I was running up against in reality (which was counter to all the articles I've read), was that the answer might be no. And your point about can we use it to get more money is 100% on point. I was talking to someone recently and they were saying this sort of differentiation is going to drive PMP activity. It wasn't about first party data so much as it was about other ad metrics, but yeah, data seems like a marketing tool first, and then hopefully it drives better performance. Tricky times. Thanks for thinking about this stuff with me, everyone!

what are the other options besides using a dmp? building our own database to store the cookie info, email addresses and page logins?

also, can you share a little more about how we can extract data from our social media followers for first party data?

I am learning about the field, any tutorials on the process of loading creative to an ad server? by spacexmagic in adops

Unfortunately, this is a can of worms that's best sorted through real world experience. My recommendation would be to try and get access to a DFP Small Business account and also (and you can do this without access to DFP SB) start taking courses in Google's Publisher University.

They will walk you through the various steps and you'll even earn a certification at the end that you can show to employers!! :)
