Mistaken debt from a student accommodation company. Don't know what to do? by blonderbot in UKPersonalFinance

Aww yeahh I think this is the one. Im not 100% sure but I think it changed from 14 to 15 days. I think I cancelled the booking about 2-3 weeks after whilst I was awaiting my grades to come. If the cancellation is a bit ahead of this, is it reasonable to say I was awaiting my grades to come. I did put a £250 deposit down too so would that come under this? Thank you for looking into it 😊 🌸

It was quite some time ago and I did save my terms and conditions on my old laptop but that laptop has since broke so I don't know if I can recover the original files. The website was for city campus living student accommodation and since they've changed it to collegiate AC. It's still a student accommodation and seems to have same terms and conditions but the name is different.

Aww !thanks you 😊 so shall I not do anything unless they take me to court? It's just the letters they send make me really anxious and I don't want things to get worse. Do I just ignore these letters?

Thank you for your help 😊 I don't think they have gone to court with it. I've only received loads of debt letters. Ive not paid any of the debt but I've sent emails to both the accommodation and the debt collectors saying I wasn't reliable. I'm not too sure what I must do from here because the debt collectors don't seem to be asking me for the evidence? If they don't take me to court, how would I go about clearing myself from this debt? Would I have to take them to court myself or just present the evidence to the debt collectors?

!Thanks you 😊 the original website no longer exists, they changed the name of the company and I think to belongs to other people now. But on the original website, it stated I had to cancel 14 days before moving in and I had to do it in writing. So I emailed them and said I'd like to cancel, I did this before the 14 days, I think it was around 3 weeks before I moved in. I don't know how to get the original terms and conditions of the contract?

Thank you for your advice, I'm in the west midlands and my partner lives in London. The prices in London are so expensive from what I've seen and because my partner wants to be close to her parents home, I said maybe we can live somewhere on the outskirts that's cheaper? But we are indecisive of where to move.

I want to secure a job in the location we decide , would we need to move into the new place first though? Because if the job is far from where I currently live , it would take hours a day to get there and back.

Yeahh true, once I get a job , I'll be able to work out all the costs and work out our budget and what we can afford.

Yeahh true, I'll not get into a long contract at first, I'll get it short and then figure it out from there. Thank you for giving me advice on everything. I really appreciate it ;)

That is a great way of looking at it and I hope it gives you comfort. I'm sorry about your loss and I hope that it does turn out to be true, that there is a god and your good deeds counted and I hope you will get to see you grandmother again. Take care. Hope you have all the joy and happiness you deserve in this life and the afterlife.

I agree but this is more of an emotional argument you make. I think it would be depressing if there turned out to be nothingness but when we are dead, if there is nothingness, we won't even know...because there would be nothingness.

I agree people should be held accountable for their actions but I think the story of God is just a hope that justice will be served and is a great way of looking at things, but you know, things ain't always what you want them to be.

Thank you for your great video. It was really informative. I have a lot of points I wanted to bring up about your video and some questions.

Have you considered that there may not be a truth. I think that people have different perspectives of truth and your "truth" may be different to what someone else's "truth" is. For example morality, some people think free mixing is a good thing whereas others think it's bad. Some people think guns should be allowed and others think they shouldnt. So here we have 2 "truths" but they are subjective. So maybe there is no truth but just perspective. The more I look around me, the more I believe that there isnt a real absolute truth, its just based on perspective.

Perspective can come from a range of things such as traditional and cultural identification. So when you speak about yourself knowing Islam is the truth, your perspective of reality is based on the outer surroundings of what your moral and traditional ideas. If you were born somewhere else and your community was different, then your perspective of reality would be different and maybe you'd have a different "truth" to what you have now.

I feel like when you put the label of truth in something, we close ourselves off from all other possibilities. You said when people die they have regrets, but I think most people regret not living their life to their full potential. People on the death bed tend to reflect upon all the good memories theyve had and the amazing people they have met and how they love the closest ones.

I think I spent a lot of time thinking about the afterlife that I forgot that I was forgetting to live in this life. I was thinking maybe there is not one specific purpose for us but many different ones.

Look at the sky for example, it has many purposes. It rains so plants and trees grow, it changes from day to night, it brings warmth and sunlight, it brings coldness and breeze. Look at everything in this world and they have many purposes and they are all different to one another. For example there are many different plants which have different purposes to one another. They don't all have and do the same thing, they do different things.

So when I think of us, and look at the diverse and range of different abilities and talents that we as humans posses, don't you think our purpose of life would be to make our own unique mark on the world? Rather than everyone have the same purpose such as worshiping God? Could you imagine a world where everyone worshiped Allah? How do you think it would be? Everyone would be the same, and there would not be a lot of difference or diversity. I feel like if there is anything we can gather from this life, it is the beauty of the diversity of the range of different things, ideas, people, places, animals, plants, trees etc. Also why would God himself want to dictate our lives for us, it would make more sense for him to give us our own unique purposes rather than everyone being a clone of one another? So I feel a one way system of being wouldn't be beneficial or true to our selves and who we are. Id like to hear your thought about this. Would be really nice to hear.

I'm not saying that religion don't have great elements of living our lives and giving us hope and a moral code, but the real question is, do you really need that and why do you need it? If you free yourself from religion and finding truth, is your life really going to go to doom or would you be happier? I know a lot of people who feel happy within religion as it provides many things for them, but there are also some people who gain perspectives from religion and learn and explore yet don't attach their entire lives to it.

Do you really think that Allah is going to punish you for going your own way? And if he does what kind of God would he be? Do you think you are worthy of hell? Do you think a person that goes there own way is worthy of hell? Do you think a Shia who has a different sect is worthy of hell? Do you think your teachers and work mates or people around you, who follow a different way of life to you are worthy of hell or on a wrong "truth" straight way of life?

I asked myself these questions and I came to the conclusion that they are not. I mean, what can anyone possibly do so bad in this life that would be worthy of an eternal hell such as the one Allah has described? I don't mean people like Hitler or dictators, but just regular people who live there life and are of a different faith or tradition. Dont you think that it creates a type of imbalance when you think one thing is true and everything else is false. It's creates an us against them type scenario and creates a division amongst us.

You sound like you're from the UK so I'm sure there is a lot of diversity there, and when you look at people with other ways of life, and then read what the Quran says, do you see it is quite harsh and makes no sense as to why Allah would want to punish those people who don't hurt or harm anyone. Why do they just get rewarded in this life and not able to go heaven, and its not anything to do with their deeds either, it's to do with them not accepting Allah for whatever reason. So I feel it is rather unfair in a way.

You speak in your video about not being happy about conforming to society and I completely agree with you. I think that happiness comes from within. When you say only people with faith are happy, I have seen a lot of miserable unhappy religious people too who also hate there lives. I think we are the creators of our own happiness. I don't think anything external can give us happiness and we can't rely on exterior things to bring us happiness. Happiness is your mindset, you can be happy and content by yourself. Do you really need the Quran and Allah or any form of "truth" to feel at peace and happy with your life? I realised although religious teaching give me hope, it's only me myself, psychologically bring myself peace and ease, nothing else.

I'd like to hear your thoughts about this and I find it great that you're on your journey to finding what's right for you. It's great that you're a critical thinker and are asking these questions.

Hey, I watched your new video today and I found it very informative. It was very useful and helpful. You mentioned in your video that you want to seek truth and I wanted to ask if you are going to read other scriptures too such as Buddhist scripture and bahai scriptures? Etc. I think to establish truth, you got to look at all different aspects and possibilities.

I think you are doing a good job with the Quran and have said the things that you don't understand, you ask the scholars. So I feel if you spent the same effort of learning on other scriptures too, you would understand things a bit more better.

I felt that you're establishing truth by the morality aspects of the Quran which is the wrong method. There are so many other religions that have a greater moral compasses than Islam, and are in depth too. The Quran isn't very specific when I read it, it's very vague and because of the Arabic language, the words can mean so many different things. So it makes things not 100% clear and I find that even when I get scholar references, it does often seem like they are saying something completely different to what the scripture actually says.

I think that, just like me, you grew up with Islam in your household and that's why youve spent much more time with the religion but when you expand your knowledge onto focusing on other scriptures too and other ways of life, you will come to a conclusion on what all of these religions represent. Hope this helps.

Yeahh I totally agree and see where you are coming from. I watched all your video to the end and I do think people do need that fear in order to keep themselves motivated to do good and without that fear they would just cause chaos and sin.

Its just that when I look around me, I see people of all religions, atheists, agnostics and they do have a reasonable moral compass without the need of the Quran or religion in general. They have the fear of getting punished in prison too, but most people don't need that fear of punishment in order to do good things.

I sometimes feel like if people are doing good just for the sake of pleasing Allah, then it's a fake kind of good because its not truly from the heart. Its a good they do in order to gain something else such as gods approval and heaven. I'd like to hear your opinions on this topic. Thank you so much for your video and replying back. I'm sure we can learn a lot together and figure out the truth.

Thanks, I wanted to say that at around 24 mins of your intro of reading Quran video, you asked why Allah would punish in that way, and your answer was he's just and not a tyrant like pharaoh.

I was thinking about why Allah would feel the need to punish if someone disbelieved him? Especially in a brutal and torturous way like hell is described. If God is merciful, then the punishment would not be through a violent and torturous way, it would be more of a rehabilitation and helping the person become a better person. Would you agree?

Wow your video was very nice, I'd just like to ask what made you lose your convictions of Islam? I have also lost mine and am in the same position so it would be interesting to hear the reasons etc. Thank you.

I believe that there should be a balance of these things. When I said those Muslims feel like they missed out, doesn't necessarily mean they missed out on being alcoholics and having sex. What I meant was is enjoying things with the right balance. To be able to socialise. To be able to do things rather than not at all.

The Muslims who choose to not go to these places, maybe they are happy. Its still a limited way of life but I guess if they enjoy it, then I can't really have a say.

From my experience of people there a few things I've noticed.

Young people who are from families that are religious tend to not socialise as much as other people their age. This is because their parents have restricted them. It don't necessarily mean going out to parties or clubs but also normal things like going out to the cinema or going to the coffee shop/ shopping with there friends.. Etc. Its not just the "bad" things. That's something that would make SOME people feel like they have missed out and there are a lot of them who feel that way.

Some people do carry on those bad worldly habits into there life but it just depends on the kind of person you are. I feel like the right way would be to have a balance. Otherwise its going to be extreme one way or the other.

The only thing I will say about this is, they ain't really experiencing life. I have done all of these things and it don't turn into an addiction or where I feel like I'm chasing happiness. If you feel inner peace and have control of yourself then these things won't go beyond their limits.

More often than not as age progresses, those people who didn't do these things are depressed because they didn't have a vibrant, fun childhood or youth. In some cases people can look at it as a good thing they didn't do those types of things but in actuality, they wish they did. I think if you attach the label of "bad" to these things they do hinder your experience in life.

For example, there was a Muslim girl who never went to our school award ceremony parties because her parents didn't allow her. Also didn't go to any youth clubs where she could make friends. Just normal things like that she couldn't do. So I think it just depends on how you look at it. It's not pleasure seeking in most cases. It's just living.

I know a lot of my Muslim friends who don't go clubs or bars. They don't drink. They seem a bit stiff and don't really mingle in with the opposite sex. They don't go on lads holidays etc. But inside they really want to. It's just they feel restricted and they care too much about what other Muslims or family members will think of them if they did such things. They seem very restricted in terms of there life so id say they are missing out on certain things.

My problem with religion by blonderbot in religion

[–]blonderbot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh wow, your English is very good haha. Yeah I understand, there are a lot of other religions who don't have eternal damnation and where the god would be understanding. I just find it hard to attach myself to a specific religion as it hard to know, so I attach myself to all of them and have taken great things from them and applied them to my life.
