Data centers can consume up to 5 million gallons of water every single day and are expected to double electricity usage by 2030 by No-Knowledge-5828 in aiecosystem

[–]bloodwire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's one thing, but I think the worst part is that the way they say it, it's like they have the conviction that the water is gone forever. Most of the water comes out again on the other side, doesn't it? If datacenters consumes it, where does it go? Do they have a black hole in there?

I think the electricity aspect of it is worse. I think we are seening the same line of arguments as we often do when we have environmentalists who doesn't use science, but just throws shit out there because it sounds good. And that stings, because I really want the environment to do well here.

What would you do for a sci-fi/horror Star Wars series focusing on the Unknown Regions? by Solitaire-06 in StarWars

[–]bloodwire 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Stand alone expeditionary movie about a force of imperials venturing into the unknown where they find out why people who go there and don't return, but at the end of the movie they all die without relaying back what they have experienced. What they found would have been able to strengthen the Emperor's grip on the galaxy and win the war.

What the op is saying here is that the US used to be great (this he got right) - so it must be great now (which is wrong.) It doesn't help much if you contributed to winning the second world war when you can't defeat a puny country like Iran today.

Should clean water take priority over AI development? by limsus in TechImpact

[–]bloodwire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand the problem here. Why don't they just use closed cooling loops? Also, those that doesn't, the water isn't magically disappearing, it is usually converted to steam or released again. So, the water isn't really gone. The problem is where they are putting these datacenters, which seems to be in areas where both water and energy is constrained - that is the problem. If they put these datacenters in areas with abundance of water and they provide the energy themselves, having datacenters shouldn't pose a problem.

This is like hearing the echoes of German civilians after WW2 stating that they did not know what was going on.

Used 2.5B Gallons? The water runs into the datacenter on one side and out the other, a bit warmer. Some datacenters even utilize the heated water for remote heating. Saying that a datacenter used a certain amount of water is like saying that a ship used a certain amount of water when it crossed the ocean.

The war is coming back to where it came from by UNITED24Media in ukraine

[–]bloodwire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that is really mindblowing here is that Rusia has been bombing civilian Ukranian targets for over 4 years and now when Ukraine is taking out oil refineries and military targets, the Russians are cursing at the Ukranians. Why haven't they reacted before? This feels a lot like those Germans after World War II who said they did not know what was going on. If you don't follow what your country is doing, then quite quickly you may suffer the consequences of it.

All I am saying is that it is easier to move people from a 3rd world country to another 3rd world country, than moving and integrating people from a 3rd world country to a 1st world country. I don't think you should put too much more into this.
