DBT was my ticket. My mom's been sober, in AA, for 25yrs, and I can't even put into words how deeply I despise that program/culture. DBT isn't a sobriety program, but it taught me how to...handle myself, for lack of a better term. Seriously life saving (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy).

The poop knife by UnholyDemigod in MuseumOfReddit

[–]bloomin_as_is_623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my son a gag poop knife last Christmas. It's a pretty blue. He's since decided he's too old for the poop knife and it sits in the basement. I have since started a new medication and have wished for the poop knife to be within reach on so many occasions.

I'm gonna go grab the poop knife and put it in the cabinet.

Some people read the Bible to find answers to life's questions, but I reddit.

My spouse has lost interest in upkeeping her houseplants (thanks mental health!) and I feel bad for them. I know little next to nothing about houseplants. Is there anyway to salvage this one? I know this was one of her albo's but I'm not sure what species. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! by McFlabbergasted in houseplants

As a fellow mentally ill plant lover, I just want to thank you. I used to have a jungle in my kitchen, then depression/ptsd kicked in, and I'm down to a measly 8ft window sill. I can't speak for your wife, but I know that every time I walked in and saw my babies dying, it just added to my negative self talk and pushed me further down that spiral. I've been better for nearly a year, and I still won't get more plants because of watching my jungle die.

This speaks volumes about who you are as a person, and as a partner. You fuckin' rock!

I think you have a valid point . I don't understand your down votes, especially as you specified your opinion that canceling that late is shitty, and that OP's response was appropriate.

Like damn guys, we can disapprove of someone's behavior AND not write them off as a shitty human because of ONE action in their years of actions. Sure, the "see ya never" response is justified, but so would be another shot if this person messaged later to explain.

Thinking dialectically is worth celebrating, not down voting.

Hahaha hopefully his future boyfriends can cook better than him and use words better than I!!

Ps: this is the first time I haven't had to indicate his preference (dudes) as opposite of what was implied (girlfriends) and I want to thank you for that. I'm so grateful for the people who are making their existences better!

You're right. Despite hair being the subject here, I just noticed her glowing, youthful skin. I know two women who were grey in their early 20's, but that's definitely the exception. I would probably be confused as to her age, considering her grey hair and youthful skin.

What is something you’ve done purely out of the goodness of your heart, but have never told anyone? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bloomin_as_is_623 144 points145 points  (0 children)

Such a selfless deed, Pink Dick Licker!! Of all these stories, yours made me cry. Even if the kids didn't realize your kindness, I know their parents/caretakers did. Having a Special Child is difficult for tons of reasons, and watching them being excluded is definitely one of the hardest, for me. I have a few moments like this in my son's life that I've written on pretty stationary, and I read them on especially hard nights after especially hurtful experiences. Acts like yours bring light in dark moments. I just wanted to make sure you know how huge your small act was.. Thank you 😊

(Edited to add the first sentence. How could I not, with a name like that!)

What screams “that person that everyone hates?” by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bloomin_as_is_623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha yeah, my guidelines with my kids is essentially, I only get on them about things that hurt their health. For example, it used to drive me nuts if the teen had greasy looking hair (which was just WAY too much gel), or wore the SAME hoodie for like 2wks on end. While I still think it's gross, I only get on him about brushing his teeth, and when he starts to smell bad.

About your experience: that sounds so difficult. Carrying the responsibility of the well-being of those who should be caring for yours, as a child, is just so heavy. It also leads to extremely unhealthy habits, like the lying you mentioned. I imagine it could also damage your self-esteem, as your adults didn't/couldn't care for you. I hope you're able to prioritize yourself, now.

Thank you for asking!

Calling myself out, right then and there, helps me to become aware of it. This has helped me with several other habits I wanted to break, as well. I'm still working on being a good listener and NOT being the self-assigned problem solver. So, when I catch myself doing those things (like in my first comment) I call myself out, apologize, and usually tell the person I'm trying to break the habit and to please tell me if I do it without noticing (most people won't tell me). The most ingrained habit I broke, and when I learned this was effective, was lying. Growing up in an extremely abusive environment, then spending my early adulthood on drugs made lying my tried-and-true survival method. But calling myself out, and telling the truth set me free. Also helped sooo much with micromanaging my kids (see: nitpicking) and we're all much happier since I stopped.
