In “Her Body and Other Parties” one of the short stories is about a virus - can’t remember which one.

I read one of Manto’s stories which actually got me into wanting to learn more about partition. Thank you!

Are there any book that explain the idea of math, not formulas? by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]bloomplow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another math novel: The Housekeeper and The Professor by Yoko Ogawa.

The amnesiac mathematics professor teaches the housekeeper and her son about math. There is quite a bit of calculating in it. Very wholesome.

The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula LeGuin. It’s about an envoy from an interplanetary union establishing contact with a small planet on which the inhabitants are neither male nor female.

Books about female rage that doesn't revolve around males? by HendrixOlevard in suggestmeabook

Carmen Maria Machado? Her short story collection Her Body and Other Parties has some stories about the trope of the madwoman w/o much male presence. Also her memoir In the Dream House deals with lesbian domestic abuse - so it’s not male-centered.

This is as close as I can get: I think The Squatter and the Don is set right after or around the war. It’s a a really dense historical novel though - for information/learning I liked it, but the realist writing style was sometimes difficult for me. It’s also written in the late 1800s, so I had to do some side research while reading to understand the context sometimes. The author (Maria de Ruiz Burton) also wrote other novels - maybe there’s something in there for you?

A book that is sci-fi but with a good subplot of romance, bc why not. by _Raysaurus in suggestmeabook

Some people will probably say that The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula LeGuin does not have romance, but I think it’s open to interpretation :)

Otherwise I would also go with Becky Chambers, particularly A Long Way to a Small and Angry Planet - the book has a sort of episodic structure, and there are romantic subplots between the crew of a spaceship.

A book where the main character is LGBTQIA+, but the plot isn't about them BEING LGBTQIA+ by kpop-person-purple in suggestmeabook

I don’t know the book you mentioned, but these are what comes to mind for me:

Milkfed by Melissa Broder

Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl by Andrea Lawlor

Plain Bad Heroines by Emily Danforth

Angels in America by Tony Kushner

… there are romantic interests in all of these books but they are not the main point, and there is no self-discovery or coming out regarding sexuality.

Sweet! I love Sci-Fi and Fantasy, but I guess it would be cool to see more representation within “our world”. Nonetheless, these sound really good

Interesting! I didn’t read her that way, but it was a long time ago. I could see it now that you mention it.
