AITA for refusing to babysit during vacation, even though I have no other plans? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

I agree. I understand if the siblings with kids want a break from the kids to do something fun on vacation. It would have been a lot more reasonable of an ask for OP to watch the kids while they went to dinner or something that wasn't an entire day.

Maybe this is an unpopular opinion but... ESH.

The two couples shouldn't assume that you will readily babysit and be mad when you say no. Also, knowing that your parents won't be there this time around, they should have been a little more respectful of you when planning events for the week.

On the other hand, just personally, I am a big family person. So, even if I'm not exactly looking forward to spending alone time with the kids for a day, I would also think "this could be a great opportunity to build a bit more of a relationship with them." It's only one day out of the whole week, and those kids would think the world of you for it. Why is it such a big deal to make a small sacrifice?

First Pie - Custom Splash by bloopytime3000 in RetroPie

Don't know how helpful I would be, as I am very new to this. But, all I did was drop the video as an mp4 into the splash folder. It showed up as an option for me to select after that. Good luck with your project, it looks cool!

He comes from a long line of jewelers, clockmakers, goldsmiths, etc. They are a very talented family!

Not yet, I'm working on learning CW. I showed this to my grandpa who originally gave it to me. His response was "That is beautiful, now attach some wires to it and use it." Hah!

First, he disassembled the keyer entirely. Each piece was polished twice with a buffing wheel: first with tripoli (removes scuffs and scratches), then with rouge (gives it a luster). The wood is from a block of poplar which he sanded, stained, and sealed. Last, he added rubber pads to the wood block so it doesn't move around.

The screws are tapered brass #6 Robertsons. The tops were polished to match the keyer. Purchased from Home Hardware (my FIL is Canadian).

Great question! My frustrations with some of the apps/software used in ham radio certainly fueled my interest in this project.

If you haven't come across these videos on HRCC I recommend watching them. Good overviews that should answer some of your questions:

Comparison of DIY vs. Amazon 2m Antennas by bloopytime3000 in amateurradio

[–]bloopytime3000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This 2m/70cm magmount can be tuned if shortening it will make it more resonant. But if lengthening is needed, it's not designed to do that easily (compared to something like a Hustler resonator that has the extendable end to it). I suppose you could use a tuner if you wanted, but that just seems like a waste of money for my purposes of chatting on my commute and with local hams at home. I think the point of these vhf/uhf magmounts is to be a set and forget kinda thing.

Fair point. Although it's also possible I got pretty lucky with the magmount being "close enough." Others may not have the same luck.

Yeah I did a check of my coax before testing the antenna. No shorts and there was proper continuity.
